🦉 The lesser spotted woodpecker (Picoides minor , synonym of Dryobates minor)
- Dryobates (Greek) : druos - forest, woodland, batēs - walker, stroller
- minor (Latin) - smaller
This woodpecker is funny because of its size, about the size of a sparrow. Unlike its “big” brothers, it does not peck the bark on tree trunks. He pecks at the thin bark on their branches or bushes. What other species of woodpeckers do not do.
But still, sometimes he can peck at the bark, if it is already loose and rotten, because it breaks easily, this is exactly what he can do.
Nests are made in old abandoned hollows of other birds. And sometimes they themselves can gouge out rotten, brittle wood.
Sexual dimorphism is expressed in the presence of a bright red cap in males.
