Bird couples and struggle for the nest construction: coot and great grebe

This post goes for 'Show me a photo (of a bird)' contest, round #172. Week's topic was 'Bird couples'.

Taking two separate photos of a birds couple would be a second-class job; besides that, I have at my disposal ducks who help me to fill a lot of various intresting prompts. 😎

The first nice pair I'd love to share is coot ducks.

Here I witnessed the moment when male was collecting material for building their nest and bringing it to his girlfriend, who was already sitting at the nest, and she used all the extra branches to improve the construction. It was a lovely activity to look at. I stand there like 15 minutes looking (and shooting) and didn't want to leave at all.

There happened a stunning scene, when the male found some particularly cool twig under the water that was stuck and he could not be pulled out... these ducks are very stubborn, and he fought with the stick for several minutes, implementing some desperate efforts! it was a downright bleeding scene to look at, believe me... (worth a video, not photo).

Here... look at his sweaty and happy face: he won!! and heading to his sweetheart holding a great prize...

Now the second part: Great grebe (Podiceps major). I have a nice opportunity to shoot the pair of this ducks that make a hatch in the local park each year. Those pics were taken back in May 2024.

Madame...

...and her Ken. Isnt she nice? Maybe she is not Barbie, but rather a Xantippa?.. xD

I used telephoto lens to make this capture, and you can see, as both birdies were located at a short distance from each other - so I needed two separate captures to combine most important details in the focus zone (photo above is the synthetic picture stitched together from two frames).

Let me round up here. See you next time!

Great grebe smartest hairstyle for Madame, attentive waterbirds when detail counts in nest building. We lose time when out watching life on the pond enjoying photography.

Thank you, for kind words, and for !PIZZA of course. I do love to shoot that birdies - they are very spectacular... photo-friendly... when they dont hide in the reeds jungle ofc. Hope to share more pics in the future! 😎

We have 3 species of Grebe across our country and the Red-knobbed Coot paddling our waters, always an enjoyable time watching them.

Agree! but -- your southern nature has much more diversity!
not like our slender aspen swampy land, especially in the city. So I rely on those duckies a lot of excitement, it is the most exotic birdies I see here. I dont even encounter swans, tho I know they occure here... a bit. Ehehe.. have a !BEER? 🤓

We don't have swans, more than make up with other varieties !LOLZ

Hey @joanstewart, here is a little bit of BEER from @qwerrie for you. Enjoy it!

Do you want to win SOME BEER together with your friends and draw the BEERKING.

Wonderful entry!🙂
It is so cool to watch the birds making their nest and to understand how hard this job is.
Have you see the dance of the grebes? I only saw on the telly. They are brilliant dancers.

Well, I saw it - but only in other's photos! lol.... shame...
I know it is very very touchy.
Also - each year I see here at Hive someone shares the picks of their red-headed chicks. And I envy... - cant take my own pics of these scenes. More to that, it was only once (!) that I was able to notice said chicks.. and still they were hiding in the nest, under mummy's body, and it all was well-hidden in the thick reeds. Impossible to shoot at all "/

music map? PROBABLY YES.

As I am a grim pessimist, I will ask you in my turn: does Hive need any music enlightment?
Check activity on my #ttt posts (I made 42 up to date) and deduce the pity answer . . .

🙃

I dont think I personally need more comments from bots, haha.
Communication with other same-minded music-appreciating conoissers and explorers, that is what does matter.
I'd love to share great finds and unknown names - there are so much gems in the back catalog, late XX century. If Hiveans are not after that, well... I can understand that, they are all 'obsessed content creators' and oriented an rewards only. Thus... they should be regarded as unworthy, lol.

Not sure I understood totally all of your idea (words are demons, they limit the sense right away restricting it in those cages). If free will means freedom, thats what I am after very much too! 🙏 'it's more of what I need' do not sounds selfish at all, I am in same boat with you here.

“What means the freedom for you?”
“I’ll tell you what freedom is to me: no fear.
I mean really, no fear!” — Nina Simone.
