We don't see these birds very often. The white ones are quite common but the black ones don't come through very often, some locals say once every 10 years. A couple of years ago we saw many over a several weeks but nothing since. I was starting to think the locals were right and they still might be as this one was alone and previously we had always seen them in groups of at least 2 or 3.
I struggled to get some good clear photos as he was well camouflaged up high in the Casuarina tree he was feeding in. I say he as I think the red tail feathers mean it's male. I would have completely missed him but @consciouscat has some 6th sense for these things and heard the crunching sound of this Black Cockatoo cracking open the seed pods they seem to like so much.
Possibly a tail feather from a Black Cockatoo found not far from the place we usually see them.
The seed pod they like so much from the Casuarina tree.
Very special photoshoot! You are very lucky!
Ps: Am i the only one, who find this bird scary?
They fly away very easily if you get near them. They DO have VERY strong beaks for cracking these seed pods open but if one landed on me I'd be surprised but delighted. I actually think they're inherently very gentle (unlike some other birds) and would only cause an issue if they felt generally threatened - in which case they'd fly away.
I have never seen anything like this in general, just the raised feathers on the head give the illusion that it is constantly irritated! The truth is that i'm also quite a bit of a geek
!LOL I guess, then, that I'm a bit of an outdoors lover and so I'm not easily spooked by things that might scare others. Although... I'm sure I'd get totally freaked out if I understood some of the techy or geeky stuff you know!

I would not like to upset one, it does look strong and powerful but generally keep to themselves
I saw them when I was in Hobart in 2020. There was a flock of the white ones as well. They're beautiful birds.
Hopefully we can see a few more
