Uninvited Guests on My Terrace: A Pigeon's Feast

Hey Everyone!!

Today, I’m sharing pictures of some unexpected guests on my terrace – pigeons.

In India, chapati is a staple food, and to make it, we need flour. Many families, including mine, prefer to buy raw wheat grains instead of pre-ground flour. We wash the grains, dry them under the sun, and then take them to a local mill (chakki) for grinding. Today was one such day when I spread freshly washed wheat grains on a cloth on my terrace to dry.

A few hours later, I noticed a group of pigeons flocking to my terrace. They were drawn to the grains and began feasting. What caught my attention was how fearless these birds were. They didn’t mind my presence as long as I remained still. But the moment I moved, they flew away, only to return shortly after.

As they pecked at the grains, I took a moment to observe their behavior and clicked these pictures. It wasn’t just these two; there was an entire group swooping down whenever they sensed an opportunity. If left unchecked, they would likely devour most of the grains, leaving little behind for grinding!

Despite their persistence and the potential loss of grains, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of compassion for these creatures. Urbanization has drastically altered their natural habitat. Gone are the trees where they once roosted and the fields where they found food. Instead, they are left to navigate the challenges of survival in a concrete jungle.

This experience made me reflect on how disconnected we’ve become from nature. In the past, mornings began with the cheerful chirping of birds. Today, we are awakened by the hum of vehicles or the buzz of our gadgets. Many bird species are disappearing, and those that remain struggle to coexist with humans.

Though these pigeons are eating a portion of my hard-earned wheat, I allow them to take what I can spare. It’s a small gesture, but perhaps if more people shared grains with these birds, their plight would ease.

I hope you enjoy these glimpses of my uninvited guests. What are your thoughts on coexisting with nature in our urban lives? Let me know in the comments!
