Guacharaca (Ortalis Ruficauda) | An Unexpected Visit [ENG][ESP]

Sometimes nature surprises us with simple things, but the noise of the city, of the technology, does not let us hear and see those details that make the difference. I was arriving home after an afternoon of shopping and diligences and when I opened the car door I noticed a bird standing in front of my house, right where I was about to get out. At first look I didn't recognize the type of bird, it really had been a long time since I had seen one and they are not common in the area where I live.

It is a guacharaca, a common bird in my country and some Caribbean islands, but it is not common in all areas. As I got out of the car, I noticed that this bird was not afraid of me. Normally a bird runs or flies away, but this guacharaca seemed to have no fear at all.

When I activated the car alarm, the bird got a little scared and started to walk and I noticed that one of its legs was injured. Although I didn't see any blood, I did notice that it was injured and maybe that's why it didn't fly away. I was eating some cookies and I took one out to give him and he automatically approached me, as if he knew it was going to happen.

The bird took the cookie and began to eat some of it. This made me think that this bird has already had interaction with humans or maybe it is a neighbor's pet. As for the bird's characteristics, I could notice a red color on its neck, a red color that stands out between a brown and gray color that has feathers on its body. On its tail it has longer feathers, which must surely be a visual spectacle if it shows them off. This he did not do with me, he always kept his tail closed.

Doing some research on the Internet, while I had contact with the bird I did not remember its name, I read that it is a bird that in some way likes to have contact with humans, they are very polite and they like to hang out in groups. This last thing left me wondering where the group of this bird would be, maybe they had an encounter with a sparrow hawk, which if they live in the area, and ended up hurt.

A curious fact about their name is that the sound they make is similar to one of the instruments used in vallenato, a Colombian musical genre, as this bird is also common in this sister country. It is even said that the sound it makes is as if it were saying the name it is popularly known by.

I really don't know how the bird got hurt and I couldn't help but feel that this bird needed help with its leg. Thinking about it, I went inside the house for a moment to drop off the packages and bag I had so I could grab this bird. When I left the house, it was gone. I looked around the area and didn't see it, I just hope it recovers soon and continues on its way.

Why did this bird end up in my house? I don't know, what I can be thankful for is having contact with nature, being detached from my phone and looking at what was around me. Although it may seem small and insignificant, I interacted with a bird that showed no fear and came to my house to rest. Perhaps it felt safe in my garden or so I prefer to think.

This quarantine has kept us away from many things, I used to enjoy nature a lot, going for a walk was my moment of detoxification of so much technological radiation. This simple and short encounter with a guacharaca, reminded me to appreciate more what is around us.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful post with the Feathered Friends Community! Great photos. I hope the bird heals quickly.

Thank you, I love the community. Sometimes birds are not easy to photograph, but we have to try.

Interesting 😃 it's nice and kind of you to have offered it something to eat and even thought of helping with his injury, trust me if that was to happen in my country, it will be said the bird is an evil bird🤣 and can even be killed at the spot😃 not too many of us love stuff like that over here. thanks for sharing with us.
Stay safe❤️

Thanks and interesting to know that. Here it is very normal for birds, especially the smaller ones, to stop at your window to sing.

Wow that's lovely
