Patiently Fishing
Massive chunky black and white with chestnut breast kingfisher sat across the river closely watching and waiting for movement in the water, poised to dive with large dagger-like bill. Upper chestnut breast is the male, with female chestnut more the belly and underwings.
Largest kingfisher in Africa lives beside freshwater, hunting fish, crabs, frogs and invertebrates, large prey is vigorously beaten against solid object like a rock to kill, dismember before swallowing.
Keeping contact along waterways with raucous call of 'wak wak wak' or repeated calling 'kek' and 'kakh' slightly different obviously when needing to be heard over water flow.
Like many of the kingfisher species they burrow tunnels in vertical banks near the waters edge by both parents, raised three to five young in slightly under a month of incubation.
Female takes over the duty of feeding the young, enjoyed seeing this bird along the Amanzimtoti river a week ago, a first, other kingfishers enjoy riverside regularly is Malachite, Pygmy and Brown-hooded kingfishers.
Giant Kingsher (Megaceryle maxima) is found over Africa south of Saraha Desert, anywhere there is a body of water with fish, somewhere to perch to dive from when hunting, apparently have been sighted in marine pools not something I have seen. Birds length is 44 cm with an average weight of 364g.
Above is the only other spot I have sighted the Giant kingfisher, lower South Coast near Port Edward, once again at a distance across water resting on a building above the water.

Lucky to see him sitting quietly along the river on the other side, far enough not to disturb him. Would love to see them fishing with massive bill, most probably don't miss a catch either.

Last weekend, I have also seen a Kingfisher ... a small blue thing flew by in front of me and because we don't have many birds that are blue, I knew it was a Kingfisher 😀 !LOLZ
It would be great to see one sitting somewhere like you did.

With rivers and waterways not freezing up the kingfishers may return earlier to your region. Walks along waterways you may have luck seeing them, although they brightly coloured and not as easy to spot as one may think.
One day off is a long week, make the most of Saturday !WINEX needed I know you don't... So enjoy a !!PIZZA for dinner.
From time to time I see one, but they are way too fast for me, or better said, I am so slow that when I realize that it was a Kingfisher, the bird is long gone 😂 !LOLZ

Your camera is doing great at capturing from a distance as the pictures appear to look nice. I recall passing Amanzimtoti and stoping briefly at the Toti beach as well.
Pocket camera works great for my safety reasons, mostly men arrive with big lens on camera to capture the birds some with tripods as well.
I gave away my tripod before leaving SA, still new and unused, got it from my ex-boss.
Unless you setup in a bird hide or sitting somewhere for extended period of time the tripod is not worth lugging around !LOLZ

All kingfishers have striking features and colours.
You have so many different birds in your area and you always seem to be in the right place at the right time to get some great pics. The Kingfisher is a gorgeous bird with some very unique markings.
He is black with white dots with grand bib, was exciting to see I must admit, always right timing for anything in life.
