Busy Birds Flying Freedom

Singing Songs Gently

Durban tends to be warm, some will breed all year long, others come and go some may have young others, fly in from the North to enjoy the warmer climate, here are some to enjoy from our region.

Red-knobbed Coot (Fulica cristata) busy raising her family on a tiny island in fresh body of water, able to run on water are fiercely protective of their little ones chasing everything away that ventures too close.

IMG_9754.JPG

Partial webbing on long strong toes in silvery-grey, legs yellow-green displaying a garter above the knee in orange-red quite an outfit on this sooty-grey body with red-knobs on the head.

IMG_9763.JPG

The African green pigeon (Treron calvus) adults look similar, make excellent parents raising two eggs at a time. Season for them is May to February building a frail platform of twigs on a sloping fork in a leafy tree. Here is one on a tree top keeping a watchful eye!

IMG_7050.JPG

Strange pigeon with parrot like behaviour, hanging upside down to get to fruit, unusual style for this pretty bird with a keen eye in slated-blue, legs and bill flashing red difficult to see between the canopy of forest or wooded savanna.

White-fronted Plover (Charadrius marginatus) endearing couple trying to distract you from their nest on sandy beach. Pairs are monogamous, often stay in the same area for many years, we have seen them together, never seen the chicks or eggs, apparently they throw sand over the eggs before busying themselves to distract you away from their young.

IMG_4341.JPG

Tiny little 50 gram birds, breed year round with little ones feeding themselves from day one, what a treat!

Cape Weaver (Ploceus Capensis) nest building among the reeds along the river, will take several females!

IMG_3026.JPG

One of our acrobatic species in the weaver species that build hanging woven chambers, endemic to the region except the exceptionally dry region, not to worry, Sociable weavers live there in great numbers.

Southern masked-weaver (Ploceus velatus) building structures from tree overhanging water for safety, perhaps all those nests will be filled known to have up to a dozen breeding females at a time. Thus making them very busy birds!

When did trust leave the room, when too many appeared at the same time, busy birds. "Relationships are like birds. If you hold tightly, they die. If you hold loosely, they fly. But if you hold with care, they remain with you forever."

Dang!! What a lovely way to spend time, watching, photographing, and learning about birds. Those tiny green ones!

LOVE that African proverb. I live by it a little. I do not like to hurry because it's stressful and dangerous, but I do like to be on time, so my solution is to minimize the number of times I have to be on time for something in any single day to only once. Preferably even less!

Loved your post!

Birds never cease to amaze me with the splendid colouring and mannerisms.

Sounds like you have sorted yourself out with proverbs to live by !LOLZ

Thanks for visiting and have a wonderful St Patrick's Day. ☘️

Why do you never see elephants hiding in trees?
Because they are so good at it.

I like the green on Treron calvus, a dusty fine kind of green beautiful to the eyes.

By the looks of those nests the Cape Weavers are busy, amazing what keeps us busy on the planet, humans and other creatures alike.

No one was meant to sit around idle of that I am sure, bird does has an amazing colouring in the eye.

Lol, true and no one should enjoy being idle.

My Gran always said idle hands makes time for devils work.... Now why did I think of that, no clue she has been gone for 50 years !LOLZ

50 years is long, it shows the times you spent with her are treasured, and no matter how long those times can be recalled once in a while.

Cute and healthy birds I can see in your blog, you not only captured them but also captured some beautiful moments that they made. Pigeons are cutest bird for me and I can see the healthy one in this blog. Thanks dear friend, for sharing such amazing photographs in your awesome blog.

Birds enjoy the garden with plenty trees and covering close to hand, pigeon a rare sight but known to be in the right region. !LUV

That is correct

I am impressed by the weavers how they make their nests, they are masters.
Coots always make me smile when I see their legs. 😀
Pigeon with parrot behaviour is something worth seeing.
Wonderful post, Joan!

Weavers try so hard to have safe secure nesting, yet snakes are still able to raid their nests. Thanks for visiting, I enjoy sharing always !LUV

Such an incredibly diverse selection of beautiful birds! You always introduce me to birds that I had no idea exist! 😍

That is the fun of seeing birds around the world, learning more.

Become excited with migratory birds realizing the long distant flight to arrive.

Others local dwellers who simply enjoy life!

Green Pigeon! I didn't even know these existed. It actually looks like a parrot.Great wildlife sightings!

Bird blends in so well with surroundings normally higher up on trees, not one we see often, perhaps the camouflage keeps them well hidden.

beautiful birds! thanks for sharing.

Each one unique, always something to learn watching them !LOLZ

The other day I snuck into the local zoo and spotted an albino Cheetah
It was the least I could do for him.

Lovely shots of the busy birds. The pigeon has beautiful colouring and I think likes to have her photo taken.
The plover is endangered here and we try to keep animals away from their eggs on the beaches.

Have a wonderful Friday and weekend ahead, Joan, 😊

Little plover is endangered, I have only ever seen eggs on a beach once many years ago.

Pigeon being relatively big was quite some distance outside our garden across the road high up in the tree top, not sure she noticed me more worried about other comings and goings !LOLZ

Happy Friday and a great weekend to you as well.

Wonderful collection of birds and nice sharing about info about them as well. I like the quote about relationships in the end.

Life and living is a delicate balance wherever you look. Thanks for visiting and have a great day!

Wow! Between all the friends you have her, all those feathered ones and the rest of the people you must know, you seem to live a blessed life surrounded by friends.

The feathered ones are just starting to return here with the early migrators arriving in time to brave more snow. The pictures will get better but i had to snap one bad one of the first robin of the year.

Soon!

Lost up the tree all alone, hope the friends arrive soon! Believe you have had some amazing snow at the end of winter! 🌞
