Insect Patrol Through Lawns In Durban South Africa

Thanks @nelinoeva for hosting new photo contest round! Theme - Birds In Grass.

Some visiting, others more residential dwellers, recent photographs of birds enjoying the lawns outside my window, now going into Autumn.

I noticed during lockdown the lawns grew longer, more birds arrived due to not being cut so low, dead leaves built up inviting more insects, perhaps down South warmer winter gardens should be left as is, to attract and feed more birds into the garden.

Sedge warbler (Acrocephalus schoenobaenus)

0737-Weavers.JPG

Group of perhaps up to twenty landed to feed, managed to photograph three together before they moved off to find their next stop. On the floor are fallen berries, attracting insects, possible seed from grasses to give them reason to show.

Brown-hooded Kingfisher (Halcyon albiventris)

1478-Kingfisher.JPG

Regular visitor around the garden, dropping to the ground to pick up a grub, or worm for brunch break, captured red handed!

Indian Myna (Acridotheres tristis)

1115-IndianMynah.JPG

Common resident introduced to our shores who love urban environment, always strutting their stuff being seen and heard. Only birds I have witnessed little tolerance between the clans are the Starlings who tend to chase them out of trees they use.

Ring-necked Dove (Streptopelia capicola)

1716-BlueHeadedDoves.JPG

Docile smaller bird that sleeps in treetops at night and spends most of the day on the ground looking for food of broken berries, seeds some smaller insects. This species has a black eye and can be found almost everywhere in Southern Africa.

Nests are vulnerable to other birds and animals. We have a nest on a flood light for the garden where the monkeys stole the eggs from.

Cape Wagtail (Motacilla capensis)

1457-Wagtail.JPG

Frequent visitor to the garden to enjoy insects whilst bobbing and weaving hither and tither enjoying life. We often have both in the garden at the same time, slightly different call.

Oh these do love the windscreen of cars, do a good job cleaning up insects splattered from your recent outings, an endearing little bird found throughout South Africa with distinct "bib" as I call it under the chin.

African Pied Wagtail (Motacilla aguimp)

1471-PiedWagtail.JPG

Stoops down to the ground to forage insects, hopping along in song and dance enjoying whatever emerges. This wagtail is slightly larger to the Cape wagtail.

Hadeda Ibis (Bostrychia hagedash)

0934-Hadada.JPG

Humans have a love/hate relationship with this larger frequent flyer, who is up at dawn with three to four loud utterances as they rise, rinse and repeat when the sun goes down when returning to roost for the night.

A Hadada in the garden is a sign of good healthy garden, when probing for tidbits underground they aerating the soil and keep insect population down, so don't chase them away...

You sure have some lovely visitors
I think my favorite is the kingfisher

The kingfisher is one of my favourites, always chatty, sits on a branch swoops down to return immediately, seldom capture them on the ground.

You have motivated me to try and find some spots to watch fir birds

Once you settled find yourself and Lulu a comfortable chair and wait, they will come.

I went and checked out a spot today heard plenty of birds
I plan to go back with a chair sometime and see if I have grown patience

If one engages he gets !ENGAGE 25 from me

You will have loads of fun with a bird feeder, bird bath, couple of chairs and a pot of tea for yourselves, once everyone is relaxed, let the fun begin 😄- Happy Friday!

We had hummingbirds last year and had regular visitors need to put them out soon

The squirrels destroyed our other regular bird feeders

This is great bunch of visitors. It is so nice to learn about the birds from your country.
Thank you very much for your excellent entry.

Thoroughly enjoy sharing and reading posts about life over time zones, sometimes vaguely familiar, other times totally different.

We get only visited by blackbirds and sparrows, sometimes crows rest on the roofs or in the tree before our balcony.
You have beautiful visitors, Joan, I also like the Kingfisher most 😃

!BEER and cheers, almost time 😂

You're certainly right, Joan, in a few weeks I will go on my first hike this year 😁

That's why I prefer landscapes and trees - they hardly move 😂

So many different birds are attracted to your yard. I agree that leaving some debris in the garden is important for both insects and birds! Great photos!

Thanks for visit @melinda010100, yes we have a lovely variety moving around. Autumn berries from a couple of trees attract them in.

Wonderful photos @joanstewart, we love watching the birds early morning while having our breakfast. That Kingfisher is too gorgeous! We're certainly blessed here in Durbs with mild winter and so many feathered friends!

Oh little friends most are regular visitors to the garden, we are indeed most fortunate being able to stand in a garden enjoying their company.

This weather is absolutely gorgeous, have a lovely day @lizelle

how are you dear friend @joanstewart good day
What a beautiful collection of images, I love them all, however the dove caught my attention
I take this opportunity to wish you a great day

Little doves don't move around as quickly as all the others, love the slight dash of blue on their little heads too. Have a lovely day @jlufer

very nice selection

Thanks for visiting and have a wonderful new week @eolianpariah

I never doubted that you would come up with the best no let down here good luck in the contest 👍

Birds are fun to watch, many very experienced photographers here with excellent variety of birds, but thanks @kohsamui99 appreciate well wishes and support.

They really are @joanstewart and I am getting to know more about them here on hive through you and others and even starting to photograph more birds now 👍

Starting out on social media in 2008 after retrenchment from corporate world I started taking more interest in photography, fauna and flora around the home, places we visited and shared the experience. Glad you enjoyed them, covid has made people stop and think about life around them more I think.

In all the damage covid has done and still is doing, it certainly has made people respect there selves and nature more, so it has done some good it's what bought me here glad I found Hive and this awesome community. 😊

Love that Kingfisher! It looks different from the ones we have here... I have no luck at all capturing our local Kingfishers, I'm just not quick enough! :-)

Capturing him in the tree is not a problem, does not go to ground often except diving quickly picks up meal, then return to the tree to enjoy 😅

Good morning @joanstewart. There are so many awesome birds in SA. Your captures are great. They all seem to be posing for you, are you a bird whisper? No joke, great stuff.
Enjoy the day my friend.

You will have to ask my sons, they think the animals do come LOL, these are daily visitors along with a few more seasonal ones.

Have a wonderful day, evening draws nigh, time to start dinner already @farm-mom thanks for visiting.
