Messy Nest ... Don't Care (4pics)

I went kayaking downtown Idaho Falls, Idaho. About one mile upriver from the falls I came across this nest and brought out the camera.

From what I could tell this nervous bird was either adolecent or protecting the nest (i'm not a bird expert in any way) Either way it was crying out when i first got close (granted i was way down on the water and it was way up on a pole)

This one came around for a bit but was very cautious of me so landed near the nest and scoped me out for a while and then took off again.

Just pretty amused at how crazy the nest was... I've seen plenty other similar nests but never that many random ropes specially that many colors.

Correct me if i'm wrong but Osprey right?

Sort:

Osprey it is. I think adolescent waiting to see if mom might just show up with a fish. :)

Those ropes are bailing twine used to hold hay bales together. Though they seem to be doing a really good job holding the nest together (Did you note that it's a 'man built' platform for it?) they are made of plastic and become plastic waste.

Cool pictures of a cool bird.

Looks like it was a man made wood platform

Yep. They are pretty common in the inland Northwest. The power companies build some of them to keep the birds from nesting on the power poles.

Wow that is quite the colorful nest!

What a freaky wacky nest ! 🤭

That is pretty amazing! And rather disgusting that we leave that much trash laying around and it ends up decorating an Osprey nest. I agree with @bigtom13 that it is most likely a youngster waiting for mom or dad to bring it a fish. Thanks for posting to the #featheredfriends community

I mostly just see branches and rope... rope they could steal from local farms like another poster said.

Right 😎

Looks like your bird does quite some interior/exterior design that holds together long enough for breeding season!

Hope you get right identification, definitely one of the smaller birds of prey.
