How I Witnessed the Ultimate Fish Hunt (Through My Lens)
A few years ago, armed with my trusty Canon 1D Mark III and EF100-400L lens, I stumbled upon a scene straight out of an aquatic action movie. The star of the show? A pelican in the middle of an intense fishing session. Yes, that magnificent bird you're looking at is none other than the Dalmatian Pelican, the drama queen of the avian world.
Let me tell you, spotting this pelican wasn’t just another day at the zoo; it was like watching a live audition for the next National Geographic documentary. The stakes were high, the fish were fast, and the pelican was... well, a little clumsy but determined—a true underdog story in the world of wildlife.
Act 1: The Stealthy Approach
The pelican began its hunt with all the stealth of a cat trying to pounce on a laser pointer. Head down, feathers fluffed for intimidation—it was a masterclass in dramatic build-up. With my Canon’s shutter primed and ready, I caught that intense moment when it dipped its enormous beak into the water like a pro angler testing the tides.
If you think pelicans are graceful, think again. This one looked like it was auditioning for an Olympic synchronized swimming team but got the choreography all wrong. And yet, there was something undeniably majestic about its awkwardness.
Act 2: The Catch
Then came the moment of glory. With a quick snap of its jaws (and a splash that could rival a cannonball), the pelican emerged victorious. Behold, its prize: a shiny, wriggling fish dangling from its beak. Cue the slow-motion replay in my mind—every water droplet shimmering in the golden light, every feather glistening like it had just been styled by a professional.
For a brief moment, I could swear the pelican looked right at me, as if to say, “Got that shot, mate?” Oh, I got it, alright. And let me tell you, this bird had the smug satisfaction of a fisherman bragging about his catch to anyone within earshot.
Act 3: The Aftermath
After the hard-earned meal, our feathered hero took a well-deserved break, floating lazily on the water. It’s the avian equivalent of unbuttoning your jeans after Thanksgiving dinner. I could almost hear it sigh in satisfaction as it gave me one final, knowing glance—a true “Did you see that?” moment.
The Gear That Made It Happen
Let’s take a second to appreciate the tech that captured this epic tale. My Canon 1D Mark III was an absolute workhorse, paired with the EF100-400L lens that let me zoom in on every glorious detail of the pelican’s antics. Shooting at the zoo can be tricky—there’s fencing, odd angles, and the occasional kid screaming about ice cream—but this combo made it feel like I was right there in the water with the pelican (thankfully, I was not).
Final Thoughts
The Dalmatian Pelican’s fish hunt wasn’t just a photo op; it was a reminder that nature’s beauty often comes with a side of humor. Watching this bird go from bumbling swimmer to victorious hunter was nothing short of inspiring—and hilarious.
So, if you ever get the chance to capture moments like this, do it. Because sometimes, the best stories aren’t told in words; they’re caught in a single frame, where a pelican reigns as the king of the pond.
And if you’re wondering, yes, the fish survived—just kidding, it definitely didn’t. But hey, that’s nature for you!

Nice shots and great timing to catch that fisherbird! Very motivating for me to get my gear out there and catch some shots like this.
Well, you still have a few hours before new year!!! Why don't you grab your stuff and get out!!! ;-)
I wish I could too... The weather's been so bad for many weeks now, that I most of the time don't want to risk taking my gear outside for even 10 minutes...
Even worse: I bought the little DJI Neo about 7 weeks ago, with the VR glasses and motion control! Haven't yet been able to even test the glasses...
Bonne chance on catching some nice shots! And already a happy new year!!!

Very nice pelican shots, @borniet! I could probably manage to get some good photos of a bird that big, and that doesn't dart around quite so much...lol! 😁 🙏 💚 ✨ 🤙

Indeed! Most of the birds that get close are small birds that move fast, so catching them in photos is a monumental task, especially with a phone camera! 😁🙏💚✨🤙
