Beating the Wings

in Silver Bloggers2 years ago

Better wing in mouth, than wing on ground.

This is the sign at our local hot wings place, where we escaped to after spending hours looking again for the millionth time at kitchen stuff.

"Wings on the ground" means to be depressed.

I guess that is fitting.

It isn't that I am depressed per se, but I do have that feeling of "the holidays are almost over", even though there is still about a week and a half left before I return to work. No matter how long they are, they always go so fast and no matter how hard I try, I can't filter out the long list of tasks that face me ahead when I return.

Well, except when I am stuffing my face with hot wings.

But that solution has its own negatives.

And I have enough of those problems already. Although, I have been starting to improve my eating habits and hopefully, the activity levels will go up as I start to see some results with my weight. Don't get me wrong, I am not exactly a pile of lard, but I am also larger than I want to be and feel it, which is the real problem. Looks don't matter much in this regard.

However, after I go back to work I will have to start ripping apart the kitchen, so that should be a bit of activity for a few days at least. And, I can't just tear it down as I would like to, because we have managed to "sell" the old cupboards to our main renovation guy. We haven't discussed prices, but since he is taking the fridge as well that is only a couple years old, it will hopefully knock off a few hundred from the work totals.

He will use it to replace the ancient one at his summer place, which is a common practice here for old kitchens. We would have tried to sell it or get it picked up for free by advertising it online, but this is even more of a win-win scenario for us and for him and as I have said before, this kitchen isn't bad, but the configuration just doesn't work well in this space and hopefully he will be able to make a nice kitchen to enjoy on his holidays.

Which is what he is on now.

However, he is still "working" as is the common practice in Finland, where the summer holidays are a break away from work, to work on the summer cottage and around the home. There really isn't the culture here of "sit around", however this is changing in the younger generations that prefer to travel instead of have a summer place, which in my opinion makes more sense - as it really feels like you have "got away".

But, perhaps this is why I don't feel that rested while on holidays as this is the 7th year in a row that we haven't travelled at all and last year with the health issues, all we really did was stay around the house for weeks on end, because my wife wanted to stay close to the hospital.

Still...

Holidays are holidays and they don't have to have quite as much work in them and, the work can be quite different. For example, cutting the grass, which is the next thing on my task list for today, which feels kind of funny because it is already 730 at night. I love northern summers.

The problem is, they are followed by northern autumns and northern winters.

And on that note, I guess I better be getting out there, as while it isn't going to be getting dark any time soon, the northern mosquitoes will be coming out in force and while they don't carry malaria, they are aggressive little bastards.

I wish their wings were on the ground.

Mosquitoes over there? Thought that was a problem of tropical countries. Good thing they don't carry Malaria.

Bet not traveling during vacations is a bummer. I sued to do it a lot before the economic crisis got pretty bad. Well, at least I have memories and the sea nearby to see with longing of going away. That keeps my blue soul at peace.

And about the weight issue, I totally get it. Once I got really thin without noticing. Tok much to do around and too little to eat. Could even walk properly and got dizzy out of the blue.

Hope everything gets better.

Yeah, the mosquitoes can be terrible here - they make the tropics seem empty of them some years. Though, it is more of a nuisance than anything else, unlike in places with Malaria or where I am from, there was Dengue.

The sea!! I miss it... the weather hasn't been suitable for it so far (and our schedule) but hopefully it will warm up and we can go to the real beach (not lake beach). I am glad that you are getting some wave therapy though :)

Too thin? What is that!!? ;D

I know a few people who have done similar and when I was very ill as a teen, I weighed half of what I do now. I feel better a bit bigger than I did as too thin.

Yeah, those bastards are horrible. My mother got dengue last year and son did I. Dreadful stuff! I wish those were our mosquitoes, but I guess we have to do with non destructive weather.

I lived far from it for some time and it was horrible. Felt like the noise I ignore everyday was missing. That blue calm has an enticing effect on the hearts and heads.

Yeah, too thin. A lot of people got like that during 2016 when things got really bad. I was one. Always sick and hungry. Bowl I cherish my belly and it's charm. Ha, ha, ha.

Wanna know something horrible? We don't have hot wings around here. Another dreadful thing.

I hope the weather gets better so you can get to the real deal. No lake beach or river beach, but the true beach along the blue calm.

I thankfully never got Dengue, but it can be a shocker for many months - makes Covid pretty lame.

Health is wealth they say and it is interesting how governments don't care much for ours, as long as we are able to pay tax.

Wanna know something horrible? We don't have hot wings around here. Another dreadful thing.

My condolences...

No beach today... but Strawberry picking on a farm :)

Yes, dengue leaves you all weakened and powerless to do so many things. I don't wish anyone getting this. Also, there's always the risk of it become the kind that causes hemorrhages.

And for sure. No care for people's health. Hospitals are a mess around and even water has gone to the bad side. The thing that I have to say about it is that taxes don't matter in a State that has control over the resources of s country.

My condolences...

Big F for us...

No beach today... but Strawberry picking on a farm :)

Oh, cool. I bet Smallsteps will have a blast with it. And also eating a lot of strawberries. :)

Fighting mosquitoes and grass...actually thorns in my case...as well.

Using our fridges until the day they die. But I had to replace an oven this month. The previous one I bought less than a year ago but its warranty only covers electric stuff and the problem was mechanical. The little metal piece keeping the door shut twisted and broke after only months of regular use. This new oven...it has the same weak spot there were simply no alternatives on the local market. Same weak new models.

At least the one I am replacing works fine but without a front door. Not safe for the place where we live with the kid but the oven could still serve as a barbecue unit at...our summer place.

Where moody goes for barbecue yet, except for perhaps my brother once or twice a year.

And where thorns and mosquitoes await me.

Making crowns?

:/
That sucks about the oven. The one we have now is not the greatest, but at least it works, The reason we are changing the fridge is because we will have them integrated.

The whole kitchen currently is so impractical it frustrates watching my wife cook... ;D

Lol, an open door oven at the summer place sounds great!!

You can always work your way to shape when you resume. Stuff your face with more wings if you want to, we all deserve a feel good moment every now and then

I have had too many "feel good moments" I think - though I am not sure where the good feeling was in most of them. Or at least, they didn't seem to last long.

How are things?

Our traditional 9-day holiday ended last week, but as far as I have seen, people are still in holiday mood. Good that I adopted to work quickly.

I am dreading firing up my PC for the first time, but I have to admit - I did send some Teams messages from my phone over the last couple days...

Holidays are holidays and they don't have to have quite as much work in them and, the work can be quite different.

I always felt holidays were meant for having a lot of time to rest and chill but when experiencing them there's still this work that will definitely take our time to engage on while on holidays.

Yeah - I think they were more "chill" when younger, but now - it is just a different form of work - still, a change is as good as a holiday, they say :)

Vacations have a way of disappearing into thin air!
The best way to tackle the endless tasks, is just to set daily tasks, something I'm not very good at.
Enjoy the new kitchen and getting your health back on track @tarazkp 🤗
