Citizen's duty

To choose the right person for next five years, but it's only relative.

Yesterday was the day to vote for the general election and Dad is not quite interested to go anywhere, as he is always reluctant to walk. However when I reminded him that Voting is Citizen's duty and he should go for it, he was super charged. For me it was a great opportunity to capture them on frames, and I did not want to miss that, so I was behind him since morning. At the age of 84, walking to the booth physically and cast vote is a great memory. Hoping to see him again caste vote in 2029, if all goes well.

The booth is very near to our house, just 100 meters away and in the morning there was less crowd, but by the time he got up, the place was crowded. Since its summer and temperature is reaching near 45°C, most people prefer the morning. I did not put any stress on him and asked him to get ready in his own pace and our family barber came in to make him ready and finally we went in the noon, before lunch.

Mom walked to the booth, but I took him on our scooty, keeping the scorching heat in view. Being super senior citizens, they were allowed to go straight to the booth instead of standing in queues.

Even though someone from the campaigning group had given us the slips, a valid document is needed , either voter id card or Aadhar card. My best friend called in the morning and reminded to carry any of these documents, so I was having them handy.

The police staff doing duty inside, asked me to come later in queue, and I did not try to convince him to vote at that time, ideally I should have been allowed. My prime goal was to take them and bring back to home comfortably, and capture these memories. A nice fish meal was ready for him, and it made his day. After he went to sleep, I went again to cast my vote.

A visual instruction in the front of booth on how to cast your vote - every time, the presiding officer will enable the ballot unit. As far as I could see, there were 4-6 members on each booth doing election duty, they are service holders from various departments and are trained for a day and then assigned this election duty, getting paid for 2-3 days. The Election Commission does a nice job in cooperation with the Central/State Government, but the amount of money spent on Election is huge, it is expected to be ₹1,00,000 crore (nearly $15 billion) and certainly this comes from our pocket, the tax payer's money.

Our vote may barely be contributing for the deciding factor, because, majority of the population still likes free stuff, and political parties are smart to feed them in name of free schemes and keep them like that. On top of that, we still run reservation even after 76 years of freedom, and not let people compete and select best brains. Population, the root cause of all issues, is a hot plate to touch, so no political party dares to even discuss on that. In my personal opinion, all property / assets should be tagged to PAN card to eliminate black money and corruption, but it will hurt many from the system, so no one wants that.

Everything is possible in this world's highest populated country in the name of Democracy - except Transparency - a true need of a country to make it corruption free and excel.

Should only honest tax payers vote ? What do you think ?

Unfortunately, that's the bitter truth. The most productive member of society(the tax payer) bears the burden of freebies.

On top of that, we still run reservation even after 76 years of freedom, and not let people compete and select best brains

Some parties are even demanding reservations in the private sector. Meritocracy is being marginalized.

I hope one day you will be voting through Blockchain based system, and the entire system will be blockchain-based to bring transparency.

In any case, unless the larger society is activated with th faculty of reason, and gets aroused with informed choice, democracy will be manipulated by the nexus of elites/powerful/fanciful cartels.

To choose the right person for next five years, but it's only relative.

Glad that you have a strong sense of civic duty.

Have a great day.

🙏🙏🙏

I think the craze for voting is much more in older generstion than the new genXorZ. They were alwsys ready to vote no matter what the situation is. ...it is good to see them super active for chosing the best for the country...

🫡👊😊💪 the power of the finger!

  • your dad looks strong! how awesome.

even in Italy there are many people who do not go to vote but the right to vote is important because those who conquered it shed blood to get it and for this reason I consider the right to vote important and for me it is a right but also a civic duty.
I really liked this post of yours, I did not know the way of voting in India and Hive allows me to know new things every day because of posts like yours.
In Italy too, politics has long lost the focus on doing the right things and often the promise of bonuses and tax cuts affect elections but afterwards little or nothing of what was promised in the campaign is kept.
The fact that your father at 84 went to vote and that you motivated him to do so is a very nice thing in my opinion that shows your civic sense.
For transparency I dream that voting will one day be managed via blockchain in all countries around the world but I think this will remain a dream of mine for a long time

Wow good sir, It's refreshing to see a reminder of our responsibilities as citizens. Each of us plays a crucial role in shaping our community's future. Let's commit to actively participating and contributing positively wherever we can.

Is it going to be BJD again or any chances of BJP..To your question, I think there should be a change in system for voting right where a person should atleast be 10th pass to caste a vote..just a thought..cheers

I think there should be a change in system for voting right where a person should atleast be 10th pass to caste a vote..just a thought..cheers

Until 1989 it was 21 years as the age of voting rights, in 61st amendment of 1989 it was revised to 18 years as the legal age of voting rights.

10th pass means barely 15 years old, I personally think not a matured age to descern right/wrong.

@milaan my main point was a person being literate as to caste a vote..so that they know what could be the consequences of choosing a wrong party.

Yes, you are right.

Democracy is about choice not right or wrong.

Which implies a political executive is entitled to commit a wrong(may not necessarily be right). Vesting choice upon people means people are empowered to make a choice(election) and for that they are the ones who suffer the consequences whether right or wrong.

That is why it is said that democracy works good in an informed society, in the knowledge economy. Otherwise, we have democracies who perform worse than the monarchy/tribal autocracy, if not informed, and restricted knowledge base.

Is it going to be BJD again or any chances of BJP.

BJP definitely has improved and may get some seats but I think, BJD will still make the majority - thanks to all the free stuff and money.

Mission SHakti and SHGs are being used as machinery for election campaigns/liquor and money distribution. Freebies on top of various assortment of goodies.

And the women feel empowered !!

ha ha ha ha.........temporarily YES.

BJP will improve its tally in MP seats, but MLA seats will be dominated by BJD, however, we might see a strong opposition in the state assembly this time.

Note- In ODISHA, people are voting for LOKSABHA as well as VIDHANSABHA.

you all look nice

I heard about it in the Belgian news. Elections are being held in India over a total span of several (I thought 5, but not sure about the number).

I think it's good that your parents managed to go and vote. People have fought for the right to vote, thus I never get it when people now wouldn't want to utilize it. (Ofcourse it's different if it's not possible because of health reasons.)

Enjoy your day!

Here's some !LUV !HUG !PIZZA for such an eye opener

Dear @sanjeevm, you just got hugged.

What a beautiful memory, dear friend @sanjeevm, and what beautiful photographs you have taken of your parents at the moment of saying their vows.
It's great that your father went for a walk to fulfill this obligation as a citizen.
I hope he gains the political force that is best for your people.
Have a beautiful Sunday

@tipu curate

Hello @sanjeevm
How cute your parents look. congratulations
what beautiful memories

Voting is a crucial part of the country development and it is good to see that you all went out to vote your preferred candidate

I congratulate you for being fortunate enough to have parents who are very old and look healthy. Here in Venezuela we will also soon be in that electoral process. I hope you have the transparency that you mention there and everything is serene and peaceful. Good post. Thanks for sharing. Blessings.

That was great Dad got up and out to vote when you reminded him it was his duty!
Here in the UK we have a general election too in a couple of months. Transparency yes, isn't that what we wish everywhere!

This day is very special for every citizen and every citizen should go out of his house and exercise his right to vote and vote for the leader of his choice who he feels will lead his country within the next few days. He will be able to set the situation, if people do not vote, they will continue to be the rulers and they will continue to benefit, they will continue to do corruption. We can remove them only through voting and the leader of our choice.

I believe that this evil is present in many countries, including those in Latin America, where I am from.
I am struck by how they mark them after voting. In Venezuela (my country) they mark the last finger of your hand almost completely!
I hope that the winner is the one who really does something for the country.

It's good that you guys vote. I've seen a lot of people who don't, and yet are very vocal about their thoughts on the current leaders. Those who think that their vote wouldn't make a difference so they don't vote are adding to the problem.

I'm glad you and your family went out there to exercise your franchise. Your family is so adorable.

It is another wonderful opportunity to exercise one human right by us casting our votes and spreading it across

Voting is a necessary, but some people just consider it a given. In my opinion, voting is a huge responsibility.
