Leadership is not only about managing people. It is also about managing feelings, moods and behavior of individuals in an organization towards the achievement of its goals by unleashing the motivational force of people. Effective leaders help their team members become people achievers rather than task achievers. This article talks about seven traits required by effective leaders to achieve desired results.
1 They Are Visionary
Every leadership success begins with a vision, and the most successful leaders understand how to build a clear, unique, and compelling vision that is aligned with the company's strategic plans. A vision offers focus and reduces uncertainty. Leaders who are truly effective are able to articulate their vision and use it to motivate others. This characteristic alone can sometimes distinguish a good leader from a great one.
2 They Have Compassion
It's natural to believe that your best performer will also be a terrific leader, but this isn't always the case. Some top performers are great at looking out for themselves, but they lack the compassion to help their teammates succeed.
An effective leader considers each member of their team like an individual. They make it a point to check in on their emotional state on a regular basis. Learning about each team member's personality, strengths, and shortcomings requires time and effort. How can you be concerned about your team if you don't know who they are?
3 They Have Excellent Communication Skills.
When you look at the world's best leaders, you'll notice that they were all excellent communicators. They understood that it is the message, not the messenger, that is important, and that everything they convey is about meeting the needs and expectations of those around them. An effective leader recognizes the importance of being aware of not only the issue but also the backdrop. They must be aware of their surroundings, adjust accordingly, and express themselves with care.
4 They Are Highly Adaptable
The pace of change is accelerating, not only in the business world, but also in the world at large. The life expectancy of new technologies is reducing, basic scientific research is increasingly collaborative, and environmental impacts are becoming more disruptive. Effective leaders need to be adaptable in order to respond to this change.
Effective leaders embrace change and help to implement changes in the organization. They are also able to anticipate future trends and challenges facing the company and take appropriate action now.
5 They Delegate Effectively.
We usually think of courage, resiliency, boldness, and determination when we think of leadership–not something as mundane as delegating. However, when it comes to leadership abilities, the ability to strategically and effectively delegate is critical to a leader's success. Effective delegation is one of the cornerstones to effective leadership, whether you're a manager at work, the owner of your own organization, or simply working on a business initiative. A leader is capable of doing their job, which allows the leader to perform his or her. Anyone who insists on doing everything themselves is not capable of leading.
6 They Contribute to a Cause Greater Than Themselves
Selflessness is one of the most sought qualities in a leader and selfishness is a sign of a bad leader. Leaders who always put their team's needs ahead of their own are far more productive than selfish leaders.
Employees want selfish leaders to fail in the expectation of being replaced. If a leader is willing to self-sacrifice and takes responsibility for the team's performance, his or her subordinates will reciprocate by taking greater pride in their work.
7 They Lead by Example
Last but not least on this list of traits of an effective leader is leading by example. It has become such a business cliché, but there is merit in this advice.
Employees respect a leader much more if they see leaders actually walk their talk. For example, a CEO wants to reduce company expenses and tries to prevent staff from making unneeded purchases. Employees, on the other hand, will not take the CEO seriously if he frequently replaces his office furnishings, and they will continue to spend. However, if the CEO cuts back on wasteful spending in his own office and focuses on increasing revenue, the employees are likely to follow suit
Conclusion
Leadership can play a major factor in the success of an organization. It doesn’t matter if you run a company or an entire country, effective leadership is critical to success. Therefore we need to develop leadership skills in order to be effective leaders.
