Leaving Behind A Legacy

Just the other day, I learned about the death of a friend and my colleague in the Sarawak Civil Service. It is so tragic that he died in a freak accident. His brother-in-law was cutting off the branch of an "engkabang" tree, the branch fell on him and he was killed. It was such a shock to his family and friends.

This is what an "engkabang" tree looks like.

This is the fruit of the 'engkabang " tree and it has butter-like properties. Unsurprisingly it is called butter of the rainforest and unlike normal butter, this is from a vegan source.

This freak accident reminds me that life is full of surprises and twists and turns. Life is so unpredictable, nothing is certain and there are a lot of things that we cannot take for granted.

I think about my own future, and how many things could go wrong without warning. This is precisely why we should strive to live life to the fullest because you never know what might happen. I am in a reflective mood, what will be the legacy that I leave behind when I passed on?

What is a legacy?

It's a tough question, one that has been asked before. Some say it's the impact left behind when they're gone. Others say it's their works or achievements after they've passed on. Still, others say it's what future generations will remember them by.

Whether you believe in an afterlife or not, we cannot deny that we all share something in common: at some point, we will pass on. When that happens, what is left behind? What do people think of when they hear your name? What will be your legacy?

Will you be remembered for the amazing banana bread recipe you shared with everyone during quarantine? Or the hilarious jokes you told at your family reunion last year? Or maybe the way you jumped into action during that car accident and saved someone's life.

You may never know the true impact you have had on the world, but what you can do is touch the hearts of the people around you by being kind and living each day to its fullest. You don't need to be a celebrity or leave behind an enormous amount of wealth. People will remember you for the way you treated them while you are alive.

Agree with you. Nothing else is permanent, only the legacy that we left behind is permanent.
