KwaZulu-Natal Coastal Region Flooding - May 2022

Cut-off low pressure system wrecked more havoc one month after cyclone Issa washed us upside down, how much more can one endure?

IMG_7245.JPG

Little bums up attitude with good shake down

I think it was late Thursday when warning was moved to Level 10 for disaster to strike once again, it may have been Friday just before all hell let loose on us once again the heavens opened not taking a breather for the next two days.

Already rocked by the cyclone last month cleaning operations only starting to get underway, where repairs had started, tarmac lifted once again tossed aside. Many had to be evacuated to avoid loss of life where blocks of flats, houses were washed away once again.

Repairs are exceptionally slow, money not forthcoming down to allocations within municipal areas are some reasons given, we know the water and electricity supply has not been repaired to all regions after first devastating blow, this could push everything to a limit of endurance.

Rain Food Hunting

Fire finch, sparrows and whydah birds came down searching for food, put out daily I tried a dry spot but they never knew to look there, whatever washed to the floor they enjoyed.

Eventually a weak rainbow late Sunday afternoon appeared, good sign of sunshine slowly attempting to throw some light at simultaneously as the rain was still falling, we call this a monkeys wedding.

Sunshine Superman

Today the sun came out with brilliant blue skies above, monkeys arrived to find fruits in large numbers.

IMG_7165.JPG

Lizards both skink and blou-koppie sunning on the same curry tree, perhaps no fighting about territory the sun-god was out to laze and warm up.

Butterflies appeared once again after all they too cannot fly in rainfall.

IMG_7216.JPG

Birds hung onto high perches to wait for the morning sun, Oh what a beautiful morning time to dry out and warm up, seed on the feeder arriving....

Some fungi hanging in on the tree once again looked slightly fresher than previously.

IMG_7235.JPG

Woody got stuck into some serious mole hunting, wow they moving underground making tunnels obviously in search of food under the highways below....

Flowers, wild flowers bright yellow dress up the region at this time of year in splendid warmth, reminder our winter is starting.

#alwaysaflower for Denise to enjoy, sunshine from South Africa directly after the rain, yes floods have not brought happiness, that we must seek between the bleakness of what has transpired, rebuild and move on.

Thought for Today:

How the Monkeys Saved the Fish

The rainy season that year had been the strongest ever and the river had broken its banks. There were floods everywhere and the animals were all running up into the hills. The floods came so fast that many drowned except the lucky monkeys who used their proverbial agility to climb up into the treetops. They looked down on the surface of the water where the fish were swimming and gracefully jumping out of the water as if they were the only ones enjoying the devastating flood.

One of the monkeys saw the fish and shouted to his companion: Look down, my friend, look at those poor creatures. They are going to drown. Do you see how they struggle in the water? Yes, said the other monkey. What a pity! Probably they were late in escaping to the hills because they seem to have no legs. How can we save them? I think we must do something. Let’s go close to the edge of the flood where the water is not deep enough to cover us, and we can help them to get out.

So the monkeys did just that. They started catching the fish, but not without difficulty. One by one, they brought them out of the water and put them carefully on the dry land. After a short time there was a pile of fish lying on the grass motionless. One of the monkeys said, Do you see? They were tired, but now they are just sleeping and resting. Had it not been for us, my friend, all these poor people without legs would have drowned.

The other monkey said: They were trying to escape from us because they could not understand our good intentions. But when they wake up they will be very grateful because we have brought them salvation. Traditional Tanzanian Folktale

The sunny photos look beautiful and so much more appealing than the wet once, although the little birds in the water look cute too ☺️

I thought and hoped that this time it wouldn't come that bad. We have also had very hard rains last week, but that's nothing compared to yours. It must be terrifying to know what might come when you get a level 10 warning and I do hope that now te nice weather will stay and the repairings make progress.

Fresh in the morning now feels like the month of May, air is cleaner with bright blue sky.

Repairs will take a year or two to fix, infrastructure was hit badly this time round. Some towns they will have to reassess as to the future in building again.

Alerted to possibility of high levels of water not as many drowning this time thankfully.

Sun is shining once again to dry the area out and mop up!

People are not happy, sadly I think it will get much worse before it gets any better. Almost thirty years into democracy and most feel they are worse off, only some very arrogant youth stirring up politically motivated movements driving the youth in the wrong direction in my opinion.

You or better said we all would need politicians who are honest and not greedy for money and for power.

When it comes to politics I steer clear, unfortunately it does effect everyone which becomes a continuous tug of war.

I'm the same as you - political not really interested, but many times annoyed 😂 !LOLZ

The nature after hard rain is especially bright and .. shining :) Hope you aren't affected by the flood

We have been most fortunate, some not so much. Devastating after not recovering from last month still battling with water and electricity. Grateful for the fact our roof is still over our heads and we can help where we are able.

Thanks for visiting.

It's really been one hell of a ride! I was terrified for our neighbour's sake; the donga has now become a massive crater, I really don't know how the Municipality is going to restore it. That section is a public lane that everyone would want to have closed down as it's just used by robbers as a getaway!
But how amazing to see all the wildlife come out as soon as a bit of sun tried to come through, it was quite an amazing sight!
Your photos really depict those moments so well!

Some homes have gardens collapsed nothing as bad as previous fortunately. Your neighbours garden was on my mind already being in a precarious situation. Water and electricity remain a major problem down here with some areas seeing no end to the problems being encountered.

Feeder had food daily even in the rain, I tried to place on a table under shelter but they do not know to look there. Came down searching through the stream flowing under the awning.

Sunshine today they all singing, drying out, warming up yes life is back in the garden again.

Trust you are managing, my brothers grandson helped an elderly gent up the road in Malvern after first floods, got nasty infection in legs that he has been treated for, must must have had sewerage in the mix that he assisted moving.

You guys just can't catch a break down there. Sterkte!

Moerkoffie en sterkte, just to start the day 😅.

Planned a getaway over two months ago to St Lucia Estuary, we going, road may take longer break is ever so required!

Despite the disaster caused by the rain, you were able to capture beautiful images of those beings who came out to celebrate the rainbow, as if putting an end to the tragedy experienced in these days, I hope that everything in your region will be restored soon @joanstewart

With hundreds living in halls needing food supplies, clothing, the community work will be ongoing until new housing is available. Hopefully repair takes place faster than was normally happens.

Looking at the beauty in nature never stops, that recovers a lot faster than we humans do.

Woody looks engrossed in whatever has got him busy there, lol the birds looks cute and free as they go about there activities. Beautiful shots as usual Joan.
Keep well in this tough times.

Woody is very busy digging holes to try get to the moles, covering them back in after the hunt. Moles under paving cause start of underground waterways which can be part and problem to decay with heavy rains.

Birds finding seed under the awning trying to avoid some rain and still feed, they have to carry on even when wet.

La Mercy and uMdloti cut off from outside with heavy devastation, time to rebuild, perhaps you will still come down before the end of the year.

Stunning bird shots Joan, that really is an awesome camera that we own :)
Seriously though I hope that you are okay, I can only imagine that this second dose of destruction will be causing more havoc on an already overstretched infrastructure that has not been fixed fully after the cyclone.
My thoughts are with you all.

Little had been fully repaired after cyclone, now worse with more to be done, hopefully soon!

Humanitarian assistance is most prevalent with cold conditions.

Thanks for kind thoughts.

Yes I have been reading how little has been repaired after the Cyclone.
The cold weather will not help people. Will be keeping an eye on things and hoping things get sorted soon!

It is going to be tough, hopefully will build once again.

Thanks for your concern, wishing you a lovely day.

Thanks Joan and yes fingers crossed things get built sooner rather than later!

Will see extent of damage when we travel up North at the end of the week. Some towns they may have to demolish certain buildings and start again, very sad how many lives and homes have been lost.

That is so tragic, have a safe trip!

so sorry to hear you have bene hit with such harsh weather again

But you found such beauty to share with us of all types birds animals flowers what a delightful post

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

Both extreme events too close together, this will place a heavy burden on the whole province trying to establish once again.

Out of disaster always something beautiful has to happen, little birds were hungry during the rains, once the sun showed up everything came out of hiding to soak the warmth up.

Thanks for visiting and hope Lulu is doing better with physio.

Ohh yes recover efforts must be so taxed at the moment after two such harsh events so close together

I think it takes a special mindset to find beauty after disaster and you clearly have that mindset :)

Have to take ones mind off the craziness around here. 🙃

That makes a lot of sense, cant let the craziness overwhelm you

Stay safe :)

Living as we do currently, sanity is a rare commodity, thanks for kind thoughts.

I hope you are well @joanstewart

Everything comes out of hiding to warm up. Thanks for asking.

Although not the best of times, you made a delightful post Joan @joanstewart with the birds and animals. I had to chuckle at the first photo “Little bums up attitude.” And Woody seems to be taking his mole detection seriously. 😊

I’m glad to see the rainbow and clear skies. You have been through a lot with the flooding. Hopefully not too long to have everything back in order. 🙏 ♥️

Not sure the little birds knew quite what to do, one minute bathing, then seed hunting it was a sight to behold. Woody has very serious hunting skills with moles, he has only ever caught one thank goodness.

Days after the storm have been busy with clearing and cleaning once again, I will be taking a week break up the coast from Friday when we may be able to see some extent of damage. Have added a couple of hours extra onto time of travel with only my eldest and myself taking a short break.

Wow! Cool photos, so many animals! Birds, monkeys, lizards.

Everything was hungry and wet, all needed to dry out, warm up, fill the belly before able to get going again, yes the garden came to life!

Oh my gosh @joanstewart. I’m so sorry to hear about the cyclones and all of the damage. That is heartbreaking what people and wildlife have had to endure. I hope it is a temporary pattern.

All of your pictures of the birds and animals coming out to get food and sun are so heartwarming!

Knocked us all sideways, exceptionally high death toll on the first cyclone, second storm; warnings put out, at the last minute, some indication, unlike the first round.

If this is climate change we all will have to have a rethink about where we live, coastal homes with seaside views (which we are not one of) will have to relocate or run the risk of sliding into the sea.

Everything came out to celebrate the arrival of the sun! 😀
