As we begin a new year, and the Silver Bloggers Community starts it's second year, we thought it opportune not just to wish everyone well, but to reflect on the past nine months and look forward to the new year.
First, an apology: both Silver-Blonde Lizzie and I (Silver Flower) have been AFK a lot this festive season. We both have RL commitments at this time of the year, and @lizelle had a few additional challenges which she may well tell you about in time. So we've not been able to give the community the attention it deserves. We'll get to what we're doing about that in a bit.
We continue to grow
- We are delighted that our numbers continue to grow: we now have 700 subscribers.
- The account has nearly 6,000HP in delegations from just 19 Silver Bloggers which goes a long way to our being able to upvote and reblog members' posts.
- There were 14 rounds of the Blog Of the Week. Winners benefitted from @lizelle's regular sponsorship of 20 Hive for each edition. For other prizes, a total 194 Hive was sponsored by Silver Bloggers: @cicisaja, @dandays, @cicisaja, @justclickindiva, @owasco, @mondoshawan and from @plantstoplanks a whopping 100 Hive.
To all of you:
Growing pains and sharing the load
Firstly, a big thank you to our Silver Fish who has stepped up to the plate both as a moderator in our Discord Server and with the funky circular Silver Bloggers logo in the banner and below:
You will find these and others in a dedicated channel in our Discord.
Because of the way the community is growing and because of some of the RL challenges some of the team are facing, and have had to take a step back. This means that we're still looking for folk who would like to help share the load.
If you'd like to lend a hand, please pop in to our new Discord Channel? Tag either Silver-Blonde Lizzie or Silver Flower. Bear with us - because of RL and time zone issues - we may not get back to you immediately, but we will!
You asked, we listened
As folk have joined our Discord - there are now nearly 60 - you have asked for the equivalent of a post promotion channel. This is exclusively for subscribed Silver Blogger and for posts in the in the Silver Bloggers Community, and fit with the community's preferred topics and interests.
A reminder of the preferred community topics and "concerns"
You will find the community description here, but here's a reminder, anyway:
A community for retired and aspirant retiree bloggers, seasoned and wannabe crypto hodlers.
The Silver Bloggers’ community brings together young-at-heart kindred spirits and younger 'old souls'. The golden threads, in addition to a love of blogging and photography, are –
a keenness to learn more about blockchain and crypto – we’re not digital natives – most of us were born before the PC was imagined; we ask “stoopid” questions
a compulsion to share our life experiences for storage on the blockchain for our children and children’s children
musings and memories of lives lived – the happy and the sad, the long and the short
planning for life beyond formal work – from leisure and travel to second (or third…) careers, hobbies that can supplement pensions and just what keeps “un” working people busy
For those new to the community:
Who are Silver Bloggers?
When the community was launched, the thought was that the community be restricted to folks over forty, and whose hair is beginning to turn silver. In other words, and yes, I'm going to say it: the older Hivean. The so-called silver surfer, mums, dads, grannies and grandpas, aunts, uncles, and more to the point, the greats (aunts, uncles, and yes, grannies and grandpas).
Soon, though, we discovered that there were younger folk who wanted to join the community - and it was hard to actually confirm that they were, in fact, whippersnappers!
So
It has to come down to the post fit.
Back to the housekeeping
Blog of the week - we are re-imagining this popular initiative and will be re-launching it towards the end of January. So, for those who are concerned that they contributed to the prize pool: what's left in the kitty (63 Hive) will be carried forward.
Growing the community account (@hive-106316): in her post announcing the establishment of this community account, @lizelle said that all rewards would go to the account. It is slowly growing. Some of the liquid Hive and HBD will continue to go into the prize pool. The rest is put into savings and powered up - usually on #HivePUD day. We didn't this month because of aforesaid RL challenges, but we have both diarised to sort things for the second Power Up Day of 2022.
Why grow the community account?
The long term goal of growing the community account is to give back to its members by -
- supporting regular contributors to the community through curation (votes on posts and comments)
- building a nest-egg of prizes for deserving contributions to the community challenges and contests.
All rewards other than those that go to the team who spend time on writing posts (set to 20% of the posts they author), are powered up to build the account.
And
If you can't or would rather not delegate, we encourage you, when you post in the community, to set the account as a 5% beneficiary. Thank you in advance!
May 2022 shine positive light upon everyone, thanks for updates!
@tipu curate
Upvoted 👌 (Mana: 73/93) Liquid rewards.
Thank you Joan, and back at you!
Fiona, I made the decision to return to blogging and Hive on 1:1:22 and see some of my favourite people are still here at Silver Bloggers and the Herbal Hive and a few other places. I'd love to join you now: As an artist I'll never be a retiree although I do have the other Silver attributes.
I also have a friend who would like to join Hive: She's a singer/songwriter, into permaculture and connecting with nature generally and I'm sure she'll love being with the Silver Bloggers too. ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎
Oh, I was thinking of you just the other day when you popped up on IG! Welcome back! Please do join us? Here and on discord. Like you, I doubt I'll ever be a retiree - I'm onto my third career and have a few necessary (side) hustles, all of which are essential. The links to the discord are in the post and we look forward to your contributions!
Thanks so very much Fiona. It will be wonderful to join you. It's taking me a little while to become familiar with Hive. And now ecency. Can you tell me if there is any advantage of using ecency rather than peakD? And the side hustles: Are what most likely made our lives all the more interesting. ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎
Personally, I prefer PeakD, but for posting from my phone, Ecency is better. I use the former most for commenting and longer posts from my laptop that are not from my Wordpress blog and published to the blockchain via @exxp. I think it's a matter of personal preference. Give me a shout if I can help?
Thanks so very much Fiona. I share from my mac so I'll stay with PeakD. I also want to share from my newly resurrected WP blog and have connected the new @exxp plugin. Another hurdle overcome. Thanks once again. ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎
That's great! Shout if you have a problem with @exxp - in their Discord, @howo and @frederikaa are very helpful. Sometimes there is the odd glitch - as I've just had, but know at least one workaround before I have to go screaming in there. BTW, if you want to publish in a community, use that tag, and only that tag. Then once published, go and edit on @peakd with the additional tags you want. The same on WP (I use different ones there) and before you hit update, uncheck the update to Hive.
Good luck and look forward to seeing you around again!
I appreciate all that you are doing, and now that I am getting the hang of this hive, I shall be more active both here and in Discord. In 2022 I may well be doing far more from home, so will be more than likely to offer a helping hand, albeit a wee hand at the moment!
Happy New to all Silver Bloggers :)
It's baby steps - it was for me, anyway! Happy New Year to you!

Running a community is no small task, even with multiple folks to help shoulder the load! The good thing is all of us subscribers are, ahem, mature enough to understand that and not begrudge any of you that needed time away from the screen. Cheers to another year of growing, learning and imparting that wisdom to each other!
Thank you for your understanding, Katie! And yes, it's a collaborative learning for us all.
Happy New Year to you and yours!
Congratulations @hive-106316! You have completed the following achievement on the Hive blockchain and have been rewarded with new badge(s):
Your next target is to reach 4750 upvotes.

Hi Fiona! Happy New Year to you and to all of the Silvers Bloggers. And thank you so much for the space of this community and especially for your support.
I'm not quite experienced in Hive but I always have the determination to learn, so if there is anything in which I can help, I will be more than happy to do it.
Thank you so much for stepping up to the plate. I have now doubt that you will be an asset to our team!
You are welcome, and it's my pleasure.
Thank you and Lizelle for opening the doors to me in the community:)
With life there are times when things don't go as expected and a personal issue may arise that needs to be attended to. Family and our own health should jump to the top of our priority list which impacts the amount of time we can spend doing things that we love to do, like sharing our experiences with other #silverbloggers.
This wonderful community has only gotten to where it is because of the hard work of the wonderful people at the helm.
This community continues to grow because of your efforts, and personally I'm not sure how you keep up with all of the responsibilities it must take to oversee such a vibrant community.
Thank you for the update @fionasfavourites.
Indeed, you are so right! Thank you for your unflailing support and understanding. Wishing you and @farm-mom and, of course your lovely family, a happy 2022!
I think you guys have done an incredible job. I will certainly be looking to help as soon as this wee account starts to grow.
May everyone have a silvertastic 2022 and thank you for all the work being done.
Just a quickie, are the logos and banners, for anyone to use, or just if we make a post that we post in the SB community?
