A rare visit

And... as simple as that, it's the start of the week again.

Yesterday, my brother visited me here in Batangas. I relocated here when I started working for a real estate developer last January. Can you believe it took him six months to visit me?

I didn't prepare much since there was no special occasion, but I decided to buy something for him and his wife to take home.

And this is what I found. Pako (Fiddlehead Fern) and talangka (crablets)

My brother loves Pako ensalada, so when I saw the Pako, I didn't hesitate to buy it. This vegetable is rarely found in Manila, so I made sure to grab some when I saw it for sale.

I bought four bundles for my brother and two for myself. Each bundle costs about $0.50. Do you have this vegetable in your country? I'm curious! I just checked its nutritional value and I'm glad I bought some for myself, as it’s packed with vitamins and minerals that are good for the heart, bones, and teeth.

I hadn’t intended to buy crablets, but the vendor selling the Pako also had crablets, so I ended up buying a pitcher for $3. I’m not sure how my sister-in-law will cook them or if they will still be alive by the time they reach our home in Pasay.

I'm just really happy that my brother visited me, which is why I went the extra mile to buy something special for them. I usually go home every weekend, but this weekend I decided to stay here. I’ve been getting tired of traveling every weekend, and the rain often keeps me from going out too. Just being honest—I'm a bit lazy to travel! The journey home takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic.

When they got home, they prepared the Pako and crablets for dinner, and here is the final result:

As for my Pako, I just cooked it today. I simply blanched it, added cherry tomatoes, and drizzled some vinaigrette on top. I paired it with salmon cooked in a mixture of butter and olive oil, then sprinkled garlic and lemon over it.

Greetings friend, glad to see you here. I was researching what is this vegetable called Pako and I got it under the name of Chinese octopus. But I think it is not the same. Yours is a fern with curly leaves and mine is a tuber similar to a potato but bigger. So I don't think I have eaten the Pako as such.

The other name for Pako is fiddlehead fern, so I think the Chinese octopus is a different one. will look at that Chinese octopus too :D

You know that I lost my access code to the other platform, I was never able to log in again.

I even looked for the images of both of them, Paco and Ocumo, and he answered that it is similar but it is not true. I see the images of your pako and it is a fern that I have never seen here. Then he tells me that it looks like the ocumo or Chinese potato but it is fake. It is not the same.

Yes, that vegetable is really delicious even if you only mix it with sardines. In the province it’s very common. You don’t need to buy it because it just grows around. But in Manila, it’s hard to find. Not all markets have pako. It’s good that you were able to buy some.

Working away from home is a pain in the butt Eylz. Travelling takes it out of you the older you get. The 1.5 hour mark is one you think you should be doing, but it adds up as often there are delays, and you have to come back lol.

So that is a good thing that you brother visited. Did they make a point or where they in the area!
The pako looks interesting, do you eat the wee crabs whole or just suck out the shell I wonder?

haha no removing of grabs as the shell is still soft, so yes you eat the wee crabs whole.

hahaha and bringing your laundry home adds up too, bringing a heavy bag just to have your laundry cleaned. lol

I never tried this kind of vegetable. A lot of fern grows in my place but I didn't know this one could be eaten.😬 Can you stir fry it too?
