A little bit of a departure from my usual fare... but as you probably realize by now, I love nature and photographing the flora and fauna around me.
My dad got me particularly interested in butterflies when I was a kid... they were always elusive and hard to photograph, but that never put me off!
This afternoon, I was standing outside by our lavender and noticed a small orange-brown creature, flitting around, extremely quickly.
These little butterflies are generally known as "skippers," and they tend to show up in the late summer and even into early fall.
The memory came to me of how these (or some close "cousins" of some 6,000 miles from here) little butterflies seemed to always show up shortly before my birthday.
They were also a reminder that summer was almost over, coming to life as the last of the blackberry blossoms were out and the grass and flowering plants were slowly turning brown and "tired."
So I settled in with my camera, patiently waiting for an opportunity... thankfully, there were four or five of them flitting around.
Even so, having them sit still for more than a couple of seconds is a relative rarity, so photographing them is mostly by the "click and hope" method!
Skippers are a little different from most butterflies, in the way they have relatively fat bodies and small wings.
They are also somewhat unique in the way the "plane" of their wings can be different, between their front wings, and back wings (2nd photo is a good example).
These particular butterflies are most likely "Woodland Skippers," which seem to be fairly common around here.
The ones we had back in Denmark looked somewhat like these, but some of them were also darker brown.
It was fun to see these little butterflies, and to remember how they have often shown up right around my birthday, for as long as I can remember.
At the same time, I also felt a slight sadness at knowing that it will not be long before summer comes to an end... but hey, we still have a lot of harvest season to look forward to!
Thanks for sharing in this peaceful moment with nature, with me!
I hope your Monday has gone well, and that the remainder of your week treats you well!
