I’m thrilled to share some exciting news from the orchid corner of our home! (I think I mentioned this a week or two ago, but can't remember) Three of our nine Phalaenopsis orchids are gearing up to bloom in the coming weeks. If you’ve followed along for a while, you might recall the dramatic journey these plants have been through—but let’s take a little stroll down memory lane for context.
A Little Back Story
About two or three years ago .. I made a bold (and, as it turns out, disastrous) decision to switch the potting media from bark to lava rock. This was based on the advice of a trusted orchid-growing acquaintance. Long story short, the experiment did not go as planned. The orchids—one by one—showed signs of stress, developed root rot, and eventually some succumbed entirely. We lost four orchids during that period. It was a tough lesson in horticulture, but as any plant enthusiast knows, the lows make the comebacks even sweeter.
Most of the Orchids looked this way.. Sad Orchids
No Need To Worry - All Is Well Today!
Out with the Lava Rock and in with the new pots and bark chips
Fast forward to today .. And nearly all of the remaining nine orchids are thriving, except for one small gal who still struggles a bit. And now, three of them are blessing us with bloom shoots! The stems are about eight inches long, and I’m starting to see the formation of buds along each one. Today, I took the precaution of staking the bloom stems, even though I was considering not doing this. I’ve learned the hard way that doing it too early is not good and waiting too long can be just as bad. Right now the stems are a flexible enough to stake up. They need to be a little flexible in order to turn the stems up and clip them to the wood stake. I’ve had the unfortunate experience of snapping one clean off in the past. Not a fun moment.
At this point, I have no idea what colors these blooms will be. Over the years, I’ve repotted and nursed these orchids back to health so many times that their original identities have been lost to me. It’ll be like opening a mystery gift when they bloom! I’m toying with the idea of labeling them by name this time around to keep track, but given how vast the orchid family is, I’m not making any promises. May it will be by color instead!
For now, I’ve grouped the three bloomers .. At one end of the row of orchids that sit on the half-wall between our family room and kitchen. This way, they’re in the spotlight .. Both for our enjoyment and for close monitoring. As a bonus, I’ve adjusted their feeding schedule. Typically, I add specialty orchid food to every other watering, but now that they’re working hard on blooms, I’ll be adding it weekly.
I know, I know - Christmas is still up. We had some guests recently who wanted us to leave it all up so they could see the home decorated. Plus I'm being lazy hehehe
Of course, this is mostly a waiting game now. Watching those buds develop and anticipating the big blooming day is its own kind of joy. I’ll be sure to share updates—and plenty of photos—once the show begins.
Don't Forget Huxley!
First shot didn't go so well.. He moved! lol
Speaking of photos, let’s not forget the household’s star orchid enthusiast, Mr. Huxley. He’s been keeping a watchful eye (and curious nose) on all the orchid action. I couldn’t resist snapping a few shots of him amidst the plants, looking as photogenic as ever. I’ll add them here for a little extra cheer—because, really, what’s an orchid update without a Huxley cameo?
Now that's a GOOD shot Huxley!
Sniffy Sniffs-A-Lot in the house
I Think A Cookie Is Well Deserved for Hux ..
Yes.. It is the worlds SMALLEST Milk Bone (I know) But he LOVES them.. and after all he's a SMALL dog!
Stay tuned for more bloom news soon!
It's times like this, when I take a few photos of Huxley and the Orchids, that the memories of Molly and Pepper come flooding back. Damn I miss them. They were such good friends to my wife and I. How could we ever replace them.. Never. Huxley has his own special place in our heart and in our home. That's for certain. RIP Molly and Pepper.
We are waiting for more to bloom! @arahman, you can learn about orchids to add to your collections.
Thanks for sharing. Have a nice day.
Thank you for your guidance.
I will share more when they finally bloom. Thank you for stopping bye!
Looking much better than my aloe plant! I had to pull one of the things off today because it was all brown and wilted. I have a feeling the other ones will follow suit. That's what happened last time.
oh man! I wonder why. That sucks.. Hopefully it doesn't die on ya. 😣
I hope not. We have it in the window sill right now. It's on the west side of the house so it shouldn't get too much direct sun. At least not for a couple months. The other parts seem to still be doing well.
Fingers crossed. I have faith in you!!!
Awe, Mr. Huxley is just as charming as Molly and Pepper!
Your Orchids for sure are looking healthy. I have to repot a number of mine, some are really looking sad. They're so generous and forgiving though (perhaps our humid climate), so still produce nice enough blooms.
It's going to be exciting seeing yours start opening up!
A more humid climate would help immensely. Oh well.. snow on the ground here right now.
They are both giving and forgiving. I try my best to support them when they stress out during blooming cycles, but I can only do just that.. my best.
That's FUR sure.. Hux is as charming as either one was. He has his own little personality and we love it!
Your orchids will reward you for all the time and love with which you have cared for them. It will be soon, get ready to be happy. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful experience. Happy new year. 😅🤗
Happy New Year!
Yes.. the hard work is slowly paying off now. I will share more once they start to bloom!
Bet it wasn't as easy to find the good Molly ones...
I LOVED seeing your room decorated. Do you use the fireplace much? My house is still decorated and probably will be until mid month.
No it wasn't easy to find them. Thank you! We don't use the fireplace much because it is gas. Long story, but it hasn't worked quite right in 17 years. Was nice when it did work, but the smell was so bad. It is direct vent, but even still the smell was bad. We tried everything they recommended and no luck. Oh well... it looks good at least. hehehe.
Huxley is a very serious guy!
But he is also so sweet!
P.S. My condolences!
For a good reason, I was absent from the platform for a long time and did not know that Molly had gone over the rainbow... Sweet girl.
May Molly and Pepper rest in peace!
They are back together now...
No worries... Yes Molly passed last October. It was so tough for us. We had to make the decision to have her put down which was very very hard. It was the right thing to do since she stopped eating and drinking. She was always a tough one to take care of, but it just got really bad the last few months of her life. We did the best we could for her. Her final days were very comfortable. We spared nothing so that she would be comfortable and peaceful. Broke our hearts.. Thank you for the kind words and sympathy. It means a lot.
Huxley is one of a kind. He has such the neat personality. We are excited to see how he develops over the next several years. He has a little Molly and Pepper personality, and a little of his own. 😊
I also had to make the same decision a few years ago, so I understand you!
Especially since I feel how much you love your little family members.
<He has a little Molly and Pepper personality, and a little of his own>
Hahaha.. Yes I didn't think of that. Good Point!
I am sorry for your loss. So you know EXACTLEY what it's like to experience that kind of loss.. I really sucks, doesn't it? :/
Yes...
Many of my acquaintances and friends do not understand how it is possible to suffer so much because of an animal.
Yup. I hear ya.
❤️
It’s a mystery…..
That it is... Stay tuned
Pepper's successor, not his replacement. I look forward to the shots! I miss them too, though.
Your orchids look fabulous. I love those pots, too.
Thanks. I picked the pots up at Lowes during the summer season. They vanished once Christmas stuff appeared.
Nothing can replace the ones we have lost. Hux is very special all his own.
You have had a great time growing your plants and you have got success with a lot of hard work. The two look adorable together as they move in together.
Yes, the hard work pays off when they bloom or even look healthy. I'll take either one. lol
Molly and Pepper were best buddies. Too bad they have passed on, but Huxley will learn the ropes and take after them.
I'm thinking of going out to look for some wild orchids to make a post in the community, it would be my first time!
That sounds like a great idea! I look forward to it 😊
