Goodbye HiveFest and stuck in Budapest

in HiveFest2 months ago

After an amazing week in Split it was time to say goodbye. It was so nice to finally put some faces to all the people I've been interacting with on the Hive blockchain over the last years. I'm not sure though, why it took me 6 years to attend my first HiveFest 😅 I will come back next year for sure!

The last week was packed with interesting presentations and panels about projects on Hive and about things coming in the future (hopefully soon). Besides that I had a lot of great discussions about various stuff on Hive. The evenings were packed with lots of community activities and some partying. Thanks to the organizers and the community for making all of this possible and for making this such an amazing experience🤩

On Sunday evening sadly it was time for me to say goodbye and I boarded a bus to Budapest at 9pm. This was kind of the wrong direction for me, as I would need to go back to Austria, but there were not many options for transporting my bike. I arrived the next morning at 8am and was already expecting a few difficulties, as it had been raining an extreme amount in Austria / Czech Republic / Poland, the days before and there were already some news of extreme flooding coming in.

In the morning I finally received the news, that (almost) all trains to and from Vienna have been canceled, for at least Monday, but difficulties are to be expected until Friday.

So I would be stuck in Budapest for at least one to two days..

Not too bad though, as I've never been there before, so I would just work remotely for a few more days and explore the city a bit. I booked an appartment in the center and looked for a cafe, where I could work from for the day.

In the evening some more news came in, that trains would not be going for the next day as well (as already expected). So I started looking for alternatives and found another bus, which would be going from Budapest to Munich at Tuesday evening. I decided to go for it and booked it. Who knows, when the trains will be going again.

On Tuesday (today) I did some more exploring of the city and again worked for most of the day in some cafe.

The Danube is starting to get quite high here as well, so I'm glad to leave here soon. Looks like it's almost overflowing already, but at least one to two more meters are to be expected in the next days.

Goodbye Budapest, hope to see you again in the future and have more time to explore.

On my way to the bus terminal I even encountered some Hive😉

I hope the rest of my trip back to Austria will go as planned and I will arrive in Munich tomorrow morning and then it should be only a train ride of 1.5h to finally reach my hometown.

Sort:

So, you are home already, hopefully?

Jeez, the Danube is almost over the edge. Usually there are at least five meters from the surface to the edge. Really hard times for many people in this area.

It was really nice getting to know you, a pleasure and a honor. Until next time. If I'll be near your town during this winter I'll certainly give you an advance warning and try to visit :)

Take care and thanks for a great company.

Yes, after another 9 gruesome hours by FlixBus and 2 hours by train I finally made it😅

It was very nice meeting you as well. Sure thing, just let me know when you are around and we'll enjoy a beer together🍻 or see each other on the piste😉

I hadn't thought about how the rain would scuttle your bike journey home.

I hope you manage to get back soon and enjoy the experience as you seem to be.

Thank you. Yes it was quite an interesting experience for the past 1.5 weeks, to take things just as they come and without having a fixed itinerary.

The my hive stuff 😎

YOU HAVE AN X1!!! 😱 (no comments...) !LOL - I have so many stories about Lenovo and ThinkSTUFF...

Haha, would love to hear some of those stories (hopefully positive ones😉). It's actually my companies laptop, which I use for work when on the go, as it is extremely light, even suited for biking😅

Well, the hardest of the ones, was when I was working for IBM... with my R40 I think... that sustained about 3 or 4 coffees on top of the keyboard... and still kept going... sticky as hell, but with a bit of water eventually improved.

Others like falling from 6-story buildings and surviving to boot after that fall. Obviously not the screen, but it booted! This one was a T version...

Other times, I was on a customer with the power cord across the room, explaining something about AIX (the IBM OS)... and then I accidentally kicked the wire, and the laptop did a split-second smash against the ground. The only damage was a little corner of plastic that broke, other than that, nothing! It did not even crash... as it was running when this happened. This was a T30 I believe.

Many others... they are basically indestructible the T models at least... the X1 are very light and versatile. But at the time those didn't exist yet (I think). Good old times...

Haha, those are some great stories😂 luckily mine didn't have to endure such extreme things yet. Only once spilled a glass of water over the keyboard. After that I immediately switched it off and kept it off for one day, as I was scared about what may happen. But hearing your stories, I won't even bother doing so next time😉

My girlfriend left me because of my obsession with storytelling.
I wonder how the next chapter in my life will go.

Have a safe way home and see you on the chain

I’m already freezing at home

Thank you. Same here as well, already turned on the heating😅

I'm not sure though, why it took me 6 years to attend my first HiveFest 😅 I will come back next year for sure!

Oh, I didn't know that this was your first HiveFest! I'm glad that I made it as it was a chance to meet you and have a talk with you... Now that I know how much you know about all those coding/running nodes stuff, I will probably poke you for some advice in the future... 😃

Nice to meet you and hopefully, see you soon in one of the next Hive meetups!!!

Safe travels!!!

It was nice to finally meet some of the fellow witnesses🙂 and the HiveFest itself was amazing as well!

Sure thing, just poke me whenever you feel like it😉

It sounds like you went through quite a misadventure, but I’m really impressed with how you still made the most of it and used your time wisely.

I’ve heard so many wonderful things about Hivefest, and I’ve loved reading the blog posts about everyone’s experiences. Your journey there was definitely unique!

I hope everything worked out in the end, and that by now, you’re safely back home. Take care and rest up!

Yes, I actually quite enjoyed it and everything turned out well in the end🙂 it's nice that everyone is describing their journey, so people who are not attending can also be part of it in some way.

I managed to finally get back home today, after 11 more hours of bus and train rides🤣

I respect you came to Hive Fest on your bike 🚲 I was stuck in Vienna the day before yesterday and saw the rough Donau from sky ... I wish your safe travel to home and see you at next Hive Fest!

Thank you! I finally made it home today in the morning. I hope your way home was a bit smoother🙂

What a mess for many people trying to get home. Hope you get home safely very soon.

And it was great meeting you!

Yes, it was quite a mess, but I finally managed to get back home.

Nice meeting you as well🙂

What an experience to get stuck in Budapest because of the floods! But right in time for a spontaneous trip and exploring!

I'm glad I managed to get out of there before it was getting really bad, as the water levels are still expected to be rising in Budapest until Friday..

That sounds scary! What an adventure! I'm glad you are safe.

Oh no...f… I saw how half of Europe looks, and I was already wondering how some of you are traveling now that everything is overflowing. Austria in the moment looks bad 🤦‍♀️Good luck!

Yes it looks really bad, but I am glad that it only came in the way of my travel plans and didn't affect me in any other way. Must be really shitty for a lot of people..

Good luck with your journey. We had issues with getting home from Austria by train a couple of months ago when it rained hard. It seems the network is fragile.

I'll see you again at another Hivefest.

!BEER

It's on another level this time, simply waay too much rain in a short time.. but I finally managed to get back home by bus and train🙂

Hope to see you again (hopefully with your guitar next time😉)
