I’m writing this post under the beautiful Croatian sky, listening to Day 2 of Hive Fest. The weather is perfect for a conference—sunny and warm, but not too hot.
Yesterday, I arrived safely in Split, Croatia, where Hive Fest is being held. It’s been a while since I’ve traveled alone for a few days. The last time was at the end of 2021, during the pandemic, when I visited Japan to spend some time with my mother in hospital. I’m really grateful to my family for supporting me and letting me go on this 6-day trip.
Initially, I had planned to take a train to Berlin airport and then fly to Split on a budget airline. However, it would’ve been quite a long trip, and I might have missed the opening event. So, I decided to treat myself and fly from my local airport to Vienna and then from Vienna to Split.
The trip started with a bit of a hiccup—a 30-minute train delay on my way to the local airport. Fortunately, I had left home early enough, so I still made it to my flight to Vienna. It was my first time flying in three years!
Arriving in Vienna brought back memories of flying from this airport frequently after I first moved to Europe, in Austria. I headed to my connecting flight, feeling a bit nostalgic.
On the flight from Vienna, I was already feeling tired, and I dozed off shortly after takeoff. When I woke up, I saw the beautiful Adriatic Sea below me. The color of the water was stunning, and just seeing that view made the whole trip feel worthwhile. I immediately thought, “This is the world of Porco Rosso! Pure Ghibli beauty!”
When I landed in Split, the first thing I noticed was the sky. It’s the perfect Mediterranean blue, typical of southern Europe.
After a short rest at my hotel room, I decided to take a swim in the rooftop pool since rain and cooler weather were predicted later in the week.
I took a walk to the opening party, getting a bit lost on the way, but it gave me the chance to enjoy the beautiful sunset over Split.
The party was held at a bar in the city center. With around 100 attendees this year, the group size felt just right—big enough to be lively but not too crowded. With a drink in hand, it was easy to talk to Hive members I recognized from their profile icons and say hello. I also made sure to pass along greetings from Hive JA.
I tend to be a bit shy and sometimes end up on the sidelines at parties, but @ninaeatshere kindly invited me to her table, introducing me to others and making sure I had a great time.
One generous detail about the party—cocktails that cost between 10 and 15 euros were available without limit. I enjoyed three drinks and was more than satisfied. I heard there’s a Hive Bar community, but I couldn’t find it. I’ll look it up once I’m back.
During the party, I felt a bit hungry, so I went out for a late-night snack with Nina, @detlev, and @elmirabear. We found a street food stall serving ćevapčići, a local meat dish. The smell was incredibly tempting, but I stuck to my vegetarian diet. Tonight, though, I plan to enjoy some fresh Mediterranean seafood at dinner.
That’s all for Day 1—stay tuned for my report on Day 2 tomorrow!

I guess it doesn't surprise me at all that your trip started with a delay on a German train, it's something that one hears happens all the time and that I was able to witness myself traveling there hahaha good thing you were cautious.
I'm so glad you were able to get organized and have the support of your family to come to HiveFest. It has been so lovely to meet you that the experience wouldn't have been the same without your presence.
And what nice words you have dedicated to me, despite your supposed shyness, you made it very easy for me to engage in conversation, you are always smiling and attentive to one, that is something that is very much appreciated, great quality of person. Our dinner walk was even more fun and I was delighted to be able to share with you the opinions about the food we tasted.
I found the Hive Bar community we talked about:

Apparently they haven't had much activity for a while, but maybe it needs us to get it going again hahahaha.
