Hello everyone and warm welcome to my Larry hunt for sàturday, the 22nd day of June, 2024. The UEFA European Championship continued today with matches in group E with Belgium playing against Romania. Kevin De Bruyne led Belgium to the Euro 2024 victory they urgently needed with a brilliant performance in a dramatic (2-0) victory over Romania in Cologne.
Ukraine had earlier beaten Slovakia (2-1) to keep their hopes of qualifying to the next round alive. With those results, for the first time in European Championship history, all four teams in a single group (Belgium, Romania, Ukraine and Slovakia) are on equal points (3points) after the first two match rounds. Qualification from group E will certainly be tough.
In the other matches of the day which is in group F, debutants Georgia, the lowest-ranked side in the tournament earned their first point in a major tournament with a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic while Portugal playing at the BVB Stadion Dortmund booked their place in the last 16 as group winners at after a routine (3-0) victory over Turkey in Dortmund.
Larry then veers off to have a look at today in #history.
Larry begins his look at today in history from the world of exploration and discovery. He finds out that on this day in 1611, English explorer Henry Hudson, who had previously attempted to find a shortcut over the Arctic Ocean to reach Asia from Europe, was set adrift in Hudson Bay along with his son and seven other people by mutineers.
From the world of exploration and discovery, Larry goes to the world f soccer. He finds out that n this day in 1986, Diego Maradona, an Argentine football (soccer) player, scored the famous "Hand of God" goal (the ball struck his hand, but the referee mistook it for a headshot) to help Argentina defeat England in a World Cup quarterfinal game; Argentina went on to win the tournament.
From the world of soccer, Larry goes to the world of space exploration. He finds out that on this day in 1978, Charon, the largest moon of Pluto, was discovered.
From the world of space exploration, Larry goes to France. He finds out that on this day in 1940, With an invading German force at its door in mid-June 1940, the French government, led by Marshal Philippe Pétain, signed an armistice with Germany, establishing Vichy France (the "French State").
From France, Larry goes to the world of astronomy and space. He finds out that on this day in 1633, Galileo was forced to renounce his support of the Copernican doctrine, which maintained that the Sun was the centre of the solar system, after being accused of heresy by the Inquisition.
Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in #history from France. He finds out that on this day in 1815, Napoleon abdicated as French emperor for the second time.
Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
