I think if I'm lucky enough to live a long life, I would like to look back on it and believe that I took advantage of as many opportunities as I could. The chances we are afforded in life are often not of our own making and are sheer luck but our choice about whether we take those chances are purely down to us.
For the last seven years I have been doing a job that I love, working with people who love to sing. It wasn't something I ever dared hope I would be able to do but I was lucky that the opportunity arose. However, the choice to take a huge risk by changing my career, when I had a mortgage and all other household bills to pay all on my own was something I was frightened by. I still did it though. I'm a huge believer in going out and getting what you want.
The song I've chosen was a number 5 hit in the UK in 1994. It was an anthem for believing in your own choices but showing respect for those who have been there before you. I hope you enjoy my version.
I recorded the keys and vocal together using a condenser mic, thus the clattering of my nails on the keys. I added the drums and bass in afterwards. I know it's really the wrong way round but I don't play the drums well enough to start my recording with them.

You get a good vocal sound with the mic so far away. I usually record with it up close. I need to work on adding bass and drums to my songs too. I am really not sure what parts to start with. May be easiest to play guitar and maybe sing to a backing track or just a drum machine that I can replace later. Something to look into.

I think I do it in the same key (A), but then my voice is fairly similar to his. I'd love to hear your version. I've done a few of his other songs, but some are just too complex with varying time signatures.
