Hive Open Mic ( #openmic ) is a global community of music lovers, for music fans and musicians. Each week is a live music invitation for expression and connection.
Hive Open Mic - Highlights
Week 27: October 11-17, 2020
Today's collection of songs speaks to the invitation: "Who." It's an abstract theme, with infinite interpretations. A common thread we can witness in these songs is that music is a life-supporting force that helps us to move through suffering. Music is a coping mechanism for stress, of course, and it is an answer to the harmony we seek in ourselves and in our surroundings. Aho.
Here at Hive Open Mic, our community supports the idea of universal harmony. We see signs of this phenomena happening here each and every week, when we celebrate the music of many languages, from many nations. Let's have a listen.

Spotlight
1000 Miles From Home (Original) by @mightyjoenolan
This singer-songwriter gives us an original folk song, reminiscent of Bob Dylan, although it's all his own. It's a message of humility, hardship, and hurt. These pain points call for a mother's embrace, and maybe the Maker's, in an effort to make it through the pain. It's a reflective self-examination, nicely aligning with this week's Hive Open Mic theme: "Who."

You're Too Faithful to Fail Me (Cover) by @joshuabbey
@joshuabbey is a delightful addition to the Hive Open Mic community. I'm thankful for his uplifting music. I appreciate the spirit of gratitude he brings through the songs he sings, and I enjoy his keyboard playing too. So good to have the variety here in the community, as it really underscores the values of diversity as we celebrate the music from around the world.
Sympathy for the Devil (Cover) by @ricardomello
English: I appreciate this musician's approach to a live music video here, like an art film, with a psychedelic close-up scenes bringing his voice to his guitar work. It's a real treat seeing the scenic countryside, wow. It's a cool camera angle, with grass in the foreground, mountains in the background, and sun rays streaming all around. Wild.
Salvaje.
Tras de Mí / Behind Me (Cover) by @jesuslnrs
English: Here's a feel-good song from @jesuslnrs, covering a song by the Mexican band RBD. It's a beautiful song, played beautifully here. In my interpretation, this is a message about leaving home, venturing into the unknown, being brave enough to live life fully. Sounds like the perfect recipe for self-awareness, self-discovery, and self-actualization, which parallels this week's Hive Open Mic theme: "Who."
The Voice (Original) by @cabelindsay
My entry this week is a song about joining the divine choir—being in universal harmony. The chorus lines are expressions of ancient Sanskrit. “Om-mani-padme-hum” is a mantra that essentially means: Behold, the jewel in the lotus. “Karuna-hum” means: Compassion is my nature.
Appreciation
Hive Open Mic showcases Hive's gifted and talented musicians. I honor these artists for expressing themselves in a way that creates connection. To me, we all benefit through the camaraderie between musicians and music fans, sharing a musical vibration. Please join me in extending our gratitude through claps, finger snaps. Thanks to all audience members for your generous listening.
Inspiration
Here's a polished sound performed live by an artist who is new to me. I admire the layers she builds in the music, creating an astral soundscape to present her expression in an otherworldly way, through feeling instead of thinking. It sounds like modern synth pop to me, celestial and contemplative. I dig the visual presentation too. It's the "shabby chic" vibe we often see in Texas, celebrating the appearance of antique/vintage elements alongside the crystalline opulence of a chandelier, for example. She is the chandelier here—the elegant focal point.
