Topic Of Discussion - "Hive Witnesses"
Hive as we all know has alot of decentralized applications and front ends. There are people that run these things. They help to keep hive going. These people are known as Hive Witnesses.
Are they fixed?
You can think of them as presidents. You need to vote them so they can perform. we have a Top 100
with the Top 20 Witnesses being able to change things provided majority of them agree via a voting process. You can vote for 30 witnesses.
One of the things that puzzled me when i returned to hive was what a witness is. I believe many newbies are unaware too. I'd like us to talk about it this weekend. Let's share our thoughts on "Hive Witnesses" how do you choose your Witnesses? Did you even know you can vote?

Let me start.
I had voted 29 witnesses till this week when @eddiespino & @grisvisa announced that @aliento could be voted as a witness. Personally, I can actually vouch for the @aliento project. They help encourage many on the Blockchain. Most times, our engagement here is supported by them. I believe with alot of votes they can perform more great activities on the Blockchain.

Well, witnesses are people who run a computer or node that keeps the blockchain going, they pretty much own "powerful" computers that act as a server to hive which makes it function properly.
We were taught a lot about them in the terminal discord but anyway, I won't come here bragging that I fully grasp everything about it.
I have voted for a few witnesses, not even up to 10, but I trust aliento so I will be voting for them as a witness, they totally deserve it.
I feel like witnesses are a side of hive that most people are no insight on because it isn't spoken enough about.

Witnesses are people who run servers or nodes, these servers keep hive running properly.
Does that mean if they stop running the nodes, everything comes crumbling down? 😳

I saw a post recently about witnesses and why every hive members should at least make a vote, I just click the link via peaks front end and looked for familiar names and clicked vote.
I do not completely understand their roles on hive or how it impacts us..

Thanks @samostically For this weeks gist, came at the right time.
Witnesses run nodes which make up hive's server. Then when they notice an area that needs improvement, or they have an idea, they bring forth proposals. If a proposal has a certain amount of votes the funds to implement the proposal are released from the decentralized hive fund.
The funds part, that's the one I always thought about. Only, I used to think they use the funds as some of sort of payment to work on the projects.
I mean the way angel investors or venture capitalist put their money into startups that shows potentials.
I think they also get some hive from there too.
For their personal use or?
They get some for running the node, and some to implement proposals.

In the simplest way to understand, witnesses keep hive running, without them and their servers, there will be no hive in a sense.

Same thing here, I was always confused by what hive witness mean. Even some oldies that I asked from didn't give me an understandable answer. It was until recently when psyberx posted that they've now got a witness - psyberx.witness - and wanted people to vote for them. I read the post and asked the question of what a witness was really and they gave a simpler answer.
So, long story short, I voted for psyberx.witness and enginewitty cos the former recommended the latter. That makes two witnesses I have voted in my entire Hive life.
You have 28 witnesses left.... I can recommend ALIENTO, LeoFinance, threespeak and blocktrades.

I know a little about witnesses. They're basically users like me and you, but have some level of authority on the Blockchain by virtue of there contributions and there HP. They do a lot of work and the own most Dapps on the Blockchain.
Witnesses on Hive are the key decision makers and they usually have a lot of following!
If you notice on some automated comments on your posts, witnesses can be found begging for votes.
But why the push!
Witnesses are the ones who agrees on what should and should not be done on the Blockchain. So, the more votes they earn, the more authority they earn.
I've voted few witnesses such as the witnesses behind Ecency and PeakD projects and fee others.
My drive towards voting for them is based on the fact that they are impacting on my Hive experience. I also try to read their descriptions and follow their external links to know more about a witness before voting.
You've raised a nice subject here, and this awareness is worth it.
Oh wow. This means I had been wrong all along. I had always thought the reason they needed the votes was so they can be paid in HBD, that way, they can focus on building the Dapps, instead trying to create posts, comments, and other community activities to earn. I had no idea they already had the earnings, they only wanted the power and authority to do what they knew best.

This question is timely because I just saw a notification on my wallet and an account is asking for my vote. I am scrolling his blog trying to make sense of why a witness vote is important
I know I have been voting or updating my witness vote whenever hivebuzz asks for it. Sincerely, I don't know what it's about and why we should vote
I just keep voting hivebuzz every time he asks because he helps me keep track of the activities on my account. Like number of posts I created, comments I receive and give, upvotes, power up, badges, etc.
I don't know if I have voted anyone else after from the ones hivebuzz recommends. I have no idea how to check either. Gosh...there is a lot of things on Hive 🤦

Edit: I remember something. I have this account on my followers list who constantly posts and asks us to update our witness votes. He edits the posts every time he finds new facts. He makes it even confusing for me because I can't understand why he is asking us to remove our voted from certain witness.

Voting for witnesses is a democratic process and I don't think it's proper for someone to detect for you who or who not to vote for.
You just have to do your due deligence and make the decision that's best for you.

I haven't really gotten any notification to vote any witness but i know hivebuss always give me update on how far i have gone with my posts and comments

Really, hivebuzz is really doing a lot. Especially, the way they help users accountable on the chain.. They do the huge job of getting the analytics of our activities apart from hive stats..

I'm not really sure of all the specifics of how witnesses work, but what I know is that the witnesses run various nodes that make up hive's server. Then whenever there is an improvement that has to be made they create proposals which we vote for . Then whenever a certain number of votes is reached the funds to implement are released from the decentralized hive fund.
Also they get rewarded in hive for running the witness nodes.
Seems I need to do some more research on what hive witnesses are?
Oh yes, and I've voted for a couple witnesses who I happen to come across their proposal.

They are computers that store block chain data, I think.
I honestly don't even know how it works. I know I approved a few witnesses, but I just randomly selected then. I had zero preference at the time, still do, because I don't even understand it yet.

I votes for witnesses that I can attest to their sincerity and contribution on the chain, not the ones I'm told about or the most popular ones. I vote for the ones who reckons with the people at the grassroot. Witness is about service to the chain, we have to make the choices and not let ourselves be taken by their overtures m

They are like those handling the supercomputers using to run the Hive blockchain. If you know how bitcoin is being mined and run on the blockchain, that is like how witness works..
Not quite long I joined hive blockchain, so I'm dam clueless about this vote for witness stuff on hive, the more I try to read about it on my own, the more I get confused, so I let it go.
I wish I knew much about them and how to vote them.
