Religious Sentiments and Politics in Nigeria

I happen to have grown up and schooled in a place far from my original hometown in Nigeria I grew up in Lagos and schooled in ibadan and currently I work somewhere around the south-west of Nigeria.
First timer often asked where I'm from because it's somehow seems strange that someone of my origin is working in a place far from where I came from.

The world seem to be suffering from a lot of racism and we are appreciative of platforms like music, sports and democracy to eradicate social diversification of people based on the colour of their skin or the language they speak or their religion.

Currently many Nigerians are divided because of the situation facing the political climate. A major contending party has gone on to choose two representatives of the same religion, a Muslim Muslim ticket and this has become a topic of discussion.

A few people are on the side that it has nothing to add if one is a Muslim or Christian from the south-east the north or the West to bring good development and encourage good policies in the country.

However some more people especially of the Christian side arguing the fact that with the current climate of insecurity and racial or tribal prejudice with nepotism they probably should have been a balanced candidacy for the party which promises to give major religions in the country a good representative.

While the members of the party of the same religion ticket argue that these two religions are not the only religions that are in the country and so that more other religions are also not represented and this doesn't mean anything as long as the person in power know what they are doing and are focused on their job.

They have even go on to invite certain unknown Godly Men who came in different oversized and unfitting regalia appearing like learners to show support for the running mate Muslim. Are we that easy to sway?

I do agree, if we believe rats, snakes and monkey stories, then why cant believe this, and like every other issue in Nigeria, we move on and it dies down.

Can we really take religion out of politics?

Can we say that it doesn't matter what religion the person practices to be able to carry out any official processes in Nigeria that we currently have today or even in the world?

For example does it matter what religion the next prime minister of the United kingdom is?

Does it matter what religion the next president of United States is?

All that seems to matter is their capacity and their capability to carry out the things that are before them.

However, Nigeria seem to be a country where democracy seem not to be the solution anymore.

We need to reform the foundation and constitution upon which this democratic process is spread over. No one can do well in a system as polluted as it is, All the aspirants coming to make promises are all in other of their parties, we know they can't even do what they promise if the main issue is not addressed.

May God direct our noble course. I hope you got your PVC.!

Amen brother. This is so sensitive. Sadly I can't vote (I'm not yet of age sha). In my opinion, and I'm a Christian, I really don't mind what the leaders' religions are as far as you are doing what you are meant to do which is what? To lead! On the other hand, I won't blame our brothers and sisters for the cynicism towards the Muslim Muslim ticket. I mean, once bitten, twice shy, right? SOME Muslims have broken our hearts by committing gruesome murders all in the name of Allah. We hope for better leaders still. Wonderful post.

You have a point, people will be people. Politics is psychology.

Amen. Yeah, I have got my PVC. Politics is almost always associated with sentiments. And for Nigeria, religion is still one of those sentiments.

Well.. it shows we are back in time. And it's not our fault. We totally believe something that was introduced to us is always greater than what we have. It doesn't matter who the president is. When the bible speaks of someone righteous leading, he wasn't speaking of a religion, righteousness as of the heart, as Christ was not yet given then to be our righteousness.

Pro 29:2 KJV When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.

It was a cut between being righteous and wicked, not Tribalistic Religiosity.

Like you said, we aren't there yet. And when process is unduly skipped, some kind of harm is almost inevitable.

And even if there may be exceptions, it should apply to those with minimal distrust not those who are seen as major culprits to the problem we seek a solution to.

You are very sound bro, and rightly so we need to fill in a file before we get there. This file has been long overdue. This folks will have no joy or peace in their later days I pray, They ll live long enough to feel the wrath of posterit judging them.

Well, this topic is really sensitive and can go any directions depending on the individuals and feelings involved. Thank you for posting in the HiveNaija Community.
