You definitely can't associate a person's destiny with his failures. If failure was a determinant of people's futures then we'll have more uneducated people. Most of the world's greatest inventors had go experience failure more times than we could count. Hehe. So, failure isn't an identity. And you're right about the weight of knowledge. Failure is a testament. And with this testament, we grow and do more.
