When I was a kid, my family would always pack lunch boxes for us to take to school. After eating my mom’s home-cooked bento day after day, I honestly got tired of it. Most of the time, it was just leftovers from the night before. Because of that, I secretly hoped my mom would be too busy to make my lunch, so I’d have an excuse to buy one of those lunch boxes sold by street vendors near the school gate at noon. They had way more variety, but they were also more expensive. In reality, what we ended up eating most often was the bento sold at the school store. There were only three choices, pork chop, chicken leg, or plain veggie rice, but the price was reasonable, and it came with a bottle of Yakult. To us kids, Yakult was basically happiness in a bottle.
In my memory, pork chop rice was the one I ate the most at school. The fried pork chop from those vendors somehow tasted way better than the one my mom made at home. It had a thick layer of batter, but the meat inside was super tender, well marinated, and full of aroma. Later on, I heard people say that thick batter absorbs a lot of oil and adds tons of calories, so it’s unhealthy if you eat it too often. Still, I couldn’t help feeling that the thicker the batter, the better it tasted.
Years later, I unexpectedly passed by a bento shop selling lunch boxes. Not only were the prices reasonable, but the flavor instantly reminded me of those school lunch box days. The difference was that the pork chop here only had a thin layer of batter—probably adjusted for modern health trends, or maybe just to cut costs. I’m not really sure. But the moment I took a bite, that same soft, tender texture hit me, and it tasted exactly like the pork chop from my memories.
To be honest, the dining environment at this place isn’t great. The space is small, with only a few simple tables and chairs. The soup is self-serve, but there’s not much in it. There is just a few floating vegetable leaves. It tastes light and plain, and its real purpose is simply to be “something warm to go with the rice”, a basic gesture of sincerity. Still, considering today’s prices, being able to find a bento that costs under 100 dollars is already pretty rare. So honestly, I still have to give this place a thumbs-up.
