People often joke that if you’re broke and can’t afford a meal, just take two laps around Taipei’s New Year Market, and you’ll be able to sample all kinds of food for free—enough to fill your stomach. But we came here after a full meal, not planning to eat non-stop but rather to walk around, get some exercise, aid digestion, and pick up a few New Year goodies along the way.

During the pandemic, the New Year Market banned all food sampling, and honestly, it really killed the festive atmosphere. A market without free samples just didn’t have the same lively, bustling vibe. It wasn’t until last year, when mask mandates eased and sampling was allowed again, that the festive energy slowly returned. To be honest, while there’s no serious pandemic this year, the flu has been hitting hard, especially for families with kids. Children often catch it at school and then pass it to their parents. But despite this, it hasn’t dampened the festive mood or sales at the market this year.

With the huge crowds, we moved slowly, casually accepting the samples handed out by stall workers along the way. Every year during this time, vendors need a lot of staff to serve customers and distribute samples. Most of these workers are young students on winter break. They hand out samples generously, and if you’re interested in something, you can even ask for a taste. The staff are usually more than happy to let you try as much as you want. This year, I didn’t pay much attention to the festive decorations—I was fully focused on sampling all kinds of snacks and treats.

I noticed there were more egg roll vendors at Dihua Street this year. One store had a giant egg roll decoration hanging at its entrance, labeled “Jumbo Egg Roll”. I tried a sample and found the texture incredibly dense. They even had a live demo showing how they make the egg rolls on the spot. Turns out, they roll the batter an extra time compared to regular egg rolls, which gives it a double-layered texture and a thicker appearance. They offered several flavors, including original, sesame, coffee, chocolate, and onion. Later, I realized that most of these egg roll stalls were selling products from Xu’s Egg Rolls, a famous shop from southern Taiwan. For the New Year season, they had rented four booths along Dihua Street to aggressively promote their brand. Honestly, their egg rolls make a great gift for visiting friends and family during the holidays.
