Tales of the Urban Explorer: The New Inn

Having done one sweep of Stoke-On-Trent, it was time for the second weekend trip down to Staffordshire. On this occasion, @lpff did not join us but provided some pins, one of which was 'The New Inn', a very dodgy-looking pub that looked very worse for wear when viewed on Google Maps.

27_IMG_6107_27.jpg

This one was a little off the beaten track, north of the pottery city and so it made for our first visit.

32_IMG_6112_32.jpg

I see the local residents have been complaining about this eyesore for some time. What residents? It’s in the middle of nowhere.

As recently as 2020, ‘The New Inn’ looked respectable albeit closed up. What we saw on arrival was far from this image. Things had taken a dramatic turn for the worse.

The New Inn in Longston near Leek dates back to at least 1817 and apparently, by 1846 it was used as a lodge by the United Ancient Order of Druids. The druids still met at the New Inn in 1876, by which time it had 103 members.

Source

Druids and Wizards? We have had it all in England, as well as Witchfinders who sought out and burned those evil ladies alive at the stake. I was expecting to feel some of that old witchcraft as we arrived but instead discovered some nosey fucker intent on watching what we were doing.

I think he was a hiker waiting for his buddies to arrive, but he couldn’t stop gawking at us, looking for a way into ‘The New Inn’. We disappeared through some straggly brambles and into a field behind the old pub, and from there it was plain sailing.

From the outside, we had no clue about access, but the cover image tells it all. You can't expect something this remote to be closed up for long unless you install alarms and cameras.

29_IMG_6109_29.jpg

It's goodbye to your property I'm afraid. Live there or you have just a few years before it's totally wrecked and useful for nothing, besides us derp explorers.

30_IMG_6110_30.jpg

Before the obvious access point, the roof could have been another way in. It's unnecessary in today's world, that is if 'The New Inn' still actually exists.

1_IMG_6081_1.jpg

After climbing through the once was window, the bar was directly in front of us, complete with tinsel (again).

2_IMG_6082_2.jpg

Times had been poor for 'The New Inn', and it was looking distinctly anything but new, especially the far right corner, which collapsed a little more when we approached causing @anidiotexplores to jump out of his skin.

I couldn't help but try and suppress a laugh. This generally does not happen but when the roof is teetering anything will cause it to collapse a little more.

3_IMG_6083_3.jpg

So the roof (as well as most of the rest) is caving in slightly, it's quite normal for us.

4_IMG_6084_4.jpg

Here's a close-up of behind the bar, with fully intact glass.

5_IMG_6085_5.jpg

It is better to keep your hands away from the bar top as glass of the broken type was freely available in large quantities atop.

6_IMG_6086_6.jpg

It's an optimistic idea but could be a little late to put into practice.

7_IMG_6087_7.jpg

8_IMG_6088_8.jpg

The New Inn’ was deceptively small once inside, with a tiny kitchen area housed at the rear which was also dropping to pieces.

9_IMG_6089_9.jpg

There's no getting in or out from this angle, even if you pull those aged boards away, the brown bars will see to that.

22_IMG_6102_22.jpg

We decided to take a trip upstairs. No need to open the door, just duck and walk through what was the door, and then climb onto the other door that replaces the bottom stairs that have disintegrated.

21_IMG_6101_21.jpg

There's no stair rail to ease your journey up, you need to use the wall and walk up that way using your hands and arms until you hit the upper stairs. Things become easier at this point.

12_IMG_6092_12.jpg

13_IMG_6093_13.jpg

Surprisingly, the upper floors did not collapse under our weight. They made pubs very well and to last in the 19th century. Last around five years that is before the upper areas are inaccessible when neglected like this.

14_IMG_6094_14.jpg

There were a few holes here and there, just don’t stick your feet in them.

15_IMG_6095_15.jpg

Besides, wallpaper that was mostly unattached to the walls, it was a little bare up there, but I spotted a book.

17_IMG_6097_17.jpg

Strange that it was the only one in sight.

18_IMG_6098_18.jpg

I don’t believe ‘The New Inn’ was ever a hotel, it was not large enough. The landlord or owner likely lived in the upper quarters.

19_IMG_6099_19.jpg

I could have done with some of that 'Good Food'. Trying the Caustic Soda could have been detrimental to our health, and the kitchen was looking off-limits. I don't think that offer still applies.

20_IMG_6100_20.jpg

The toilet, albeit very colourful was also a bad idea to visit. Our bowels sadly would need to wait a little longer, before emptying.

11_IMG_6091_11.jpg

Going down is always easier; if the improvised door is slippery you can always slide down the last section.

23_IMG_6103_23.jpg

Seeing this notice attached to one of the doors made me think they employed students during the summer months. They would have needed to live close by to make it worthwhile. Most of them don’t own cars.

24_IMG_6104_24.jpg

Down there was the cellar, it was never going to get any better than what you can see.

25_IMG_6105_25.jpg

As per the norm, @anidiotexplorers was flaunting the rules, he does that often and I am surprised the derp anti-smoking cops have not busted him yet.

26_IMG_6106_26.jpg

After one last look at the wrecked bar, we exited out of the broken window, thinking…, well it wasn’t a fail!

It really goes to show how quickly a place can go downhill into deriliction!

Aye, the roof had gone above the bog.., which caused the floor to collapse at the lower level.., almost on my comrade in arms.. (chuckle)...

Bloody roofs, they dont make em like they used to :OD

wow 3 years to achieve DERP status, that is quick!

The curse of the druids, I'm sure of it. I was hoping to feel some magic from within those hallowed walls of filth and crap.

and did you feel it?

Nah, I am immune from such things 😄

Yikes, that one looked pretty rough right from the get go! Quite a difference a couple of years can make. That photo you shared from 2020 is almost unrecognizable compared to the current photos. It still looks like you were able to find a couple of decent artifacts. Maybe not a time capsule, but still a decent explore?

Maybe not a time capsule, but still a decent explore?

As it was the first of the day, a suitable analogy would be a starter of garlic bread that was a little on the dry side. Needed more garlic 😀

Everything needs more garlic!

I was delighted to see this new edition of one of those "disastrous places" you always find!... As always, there are photographs here which border on surrealism!... I was amazed by that toilet surrounded by chaos and even with a fern !... ha ha ha! ;)

Sometimes I wish we could hear the story of the people living in the places you publish. It would add some nice context.
I was thinking of you while in Portugal as there were many abandoned houses and places, although most are almost ruins and there are not so interesting in terms of photography.

Sometimes I wish we could hear the story of the people living in the places you publish.

Do you mean before it was abandoned or while.., as often is the case someone is still living at them, but they are rarely home.

Before.

Bizarre to see how quickly a building deteriorates, and also bizarre how much personal belongings remain in it. So is it just a 'haunted house' and no one is going to work with it?

So is it just a 'haunted house' and no one is going to work with it?

Not so haunted.., I wish for once one would become haunted so I could experience some real spooks. 400+ explores.., and not a thing.

No smoking label seems funny there after all :)

I see those signs only too often, they tend to make me laugh. Ones about keeping the place clean, even better.

Having no smoking label there maybe quite funny because we both know that some people will still smoke there after the warning

There's no stopping @anidiotexplores and his smoking. It's pretty much constant when he's in derps.

Wow you're brave going in somewhere with a falling roof. What a shame though that someone didn't do the place up instead of letting it fall in to wrack and ruin like that.

Another one bites the dust, sad to see the old inn's tumbling down one by one, modern society no longer interested in holding onto the history.

!BEER

What a shame such an old building with all that history has fallen apart so quickly. Do you think this pub was a victim of the pandemic lockdowns?

Many closed due to that, it could well have been.

That bog photo is fantastic! Haha

Jeez - what a difference in just 3 years - thats quite mental ! I'm glad to see the tinsel though, would have been really disappointed if it wasnt there ! Merry Xmas !

Not nearly enough druids in this post. Oh well. Another interesting exploration!

Woah! The overgrown toilet was the most striking image! What a weird feeling it gave me.

Hey @slobberchops, here is a little bit of BEER from @joanstewart for you. Enjoy it!

We love your support by voting @detlev.witness on HIVE .

Crazy to always find such locations over there,. The building looks strong on the outside, but inside its just another wreck hole. U didn't actually mention what the place was used for before it was abandoned,. Was it a house or apartment. ?
