Were businesses still built with private apartments for the proprietor in the '60s?

Yes they were, cops used to live in houses that doubled as little stations. They have all gone now, but it's one example that springs to mind.

In those years, everything was government run, the doctors, the dentist's and the cops.. the latter of which is unchanged.
