I think you should carry a small stick ladder

I try and go as light as possible. More stuff to carry.., it doesn't fit the incognito look. I have some ladders in the car if necessary, they rarely get used.

I believe the mystery device is an old (possibly auld) washing ringer.

You can still get them, mangles.. something from past ages!
