INDUSTRIAL ABANDONMENT
The Malzfabrik is a very special place. In the middle of the city, most of the factory lies dormant. Some buildings are used for various purposes, such as parties, television productions, as workshops and studios. The large former production building, however, is largely unused. Almost all the machinery and equipment is still there. The malt factory has so far been largely spared from vandalism.
Die Malzfabrik ist ein ganz besonderer Ort. Mitten in der Stadt liegt der größte Teil der Fabrik im Dornröschenschlaf. Einige Gebäude werden für verschiedene Zwecke, wie Feiern, Fernsehproduktionen, als Werkstätten und Ateliers genutzt. Das große ehemalige Produktionsgebäude ist allerdings weitestgehend ungenutzt. Fast alle Maschienen und Einrichtungen sind noch vorhanden. Von Vandalismus blieb die Malzfabrik bisher weitestgehend verschont.
The malt factory was built from 1914 to 1917. Due to the World War, however, mechanised malt production did not begin until 1921. The malt was used to supply all Schultheiss breweries with malt. Operations were discontinued in 1996. In Berlin Weißensee (formerly East Berlin), an efficient malt house was part of the Kindl brewery. In addition, the demand for so-called mass-produced beer dropped significantly at that time.
Die Malzfabrik wurde von 1914 bis 1917 erbaut. Aufgrund des Weltkrieges wurde allerdings erst im Jahr 1921 mit der mechanisierten Produktion von Malz begonnen. Mit dem Malz wurden alle Schultheiss Brauereien mit Malz beliefert. Im Jahr 1996 wurde der Betrieb eingestellt. In Berlin Weißensee (ehemals Ost Berlin) war eine leistungsfähige Mälzerei Teil der Kindl Brauerei. Außerdem sank die Nachfrage nach sogenanntem Massenbier zu dieser Zeit deutlich.
In the 1950s, many of the malting plants were modernised. Almost the entire factory is in the condition after this modernisation. All the equipment was controlled from the control room shown in the picture. When I took a closer look, I noticed that parts of the control panels were still live. I preferred not to operate any of the switches. Who knows what would have happened.
In den 1950er Jahren wurden viele Anlagen der Mälzerei modernisiert. Fast die gesamte Fabrik befindet sich im Zustand nach dieser Modernisierung. Von der im Bild zu sehenden Warte wurden sämtliche Anlagen gesteuert. Als ich mir das genauer ansah bemerkte ich das Teile der Steuertafeln noch unter Spannung standen. Ich habe lieber keinen der Schalter betätigt. Wer weiß was passiert wäre.
There is still grain everywhere on the upper floors. A paradise for mice and pigeons. The big hopper is completely full of pigeon shit. Fortunately, I take my pictures without the smell. This large funnel was originally mounted under the kiln bonnet to prevent rainwater from getting onto the grain. Because it was not clear whether the brackets were still secure enough, all the funnels were lowered to the ground a few years ago.
In den oberen Etagen liegt überall noch Getreide. Ein Paradis für Mäuse und Tauben. Der große Trichter ist komplett voller Taubenscheiße. Glücklicherweise nehme ich meine Bilder ohne Geruch auf. Dieser große Trichter war ursprünglich unter der Darrhaube montiert damit kein Regenwasser auf das Getreide gelangt. Weil nicht klar war, ob die Halterungen noch sicher genug sind wurden alle Trichter vor einigen Jahren auf den Boden abgelassen.
The barley was soaked in these basins so that it would begin to germinate. Afterwards, the germination process was stopped by drying. The result of the process was barley malt as the basic ingredient for brewing beer.
In diesen Becken wurde die Gerste eingeweicht damit sie zu keimen beginnt. Im Anschluss wurde durch Trocknung der Keimvorgang wieder gestoppt. Das Ergnis des Prozesses war dan Gerstenmalz als Grundstoff zum Brauen von Bier.
