This will be a story about the few times I've chosen to swap a trekking plan for something else. What I love about less-planned trips is how unpredictable they can be and the places they can lead you to discover. On our last trip to Córdoba, my dad and I stumbled almost by accident upon a place that immediately piqued our curiosity and made us replace our afternoon in the mountains with one of urban exploration. If you ask me, I'm not complaining because I've seen plenty of mountains, but an abandoned place as large as the Embalse Tourist Unit, never before 😃.

Este va a ser un relato de las pocas veces que preferí cambiar un plan de trekking por alguna otra cosa. Lo que me gusta de los viajes no tan planeados es lo impredecibles que pueden ser y a los lugares que te pueden llevar a descubrir. En nuestro último viaje a Córdoba, mi papá y yo llegamos casi sin querer hasta un lugar que inmediatamente atrapó nuestra curiosidad e hizo que reemplazaramos nuestra tarde de montaña por una de exploración urbana. Si me preguntan, no me lamento porque montañas vi muchas, pero un lugar abandonado tan grande como la Unidad Turística Embalse, nunca.

My dad and I had arrived in the town of Embalse, Córdoba, Argentina, early in the morning without a very defined plan and knowing almost nothing about the place. We only knew about the large reservoir that gives the town its name, but that was about it. To fill our day, we asked for some extra information at the tourist office, where they told us about all the things there were to do. I specifically asked about a mountain to climb, and they told me there was a small hill with a great view of the dam and its trail starting right at the entrance to the Embalse Tourist Unit.

Mi papá y yo habíamos llegado a la ciudad de Embalse, Córdoba, Argentina, temprano en la mañana sin un plan muy bien definido y casi sin saber nada de este lugar. Solo sabíamos sobre el gran embalse que le da nombre a este lugar, pero eso era todo. Para rellenar nuestro día, pedimos un poco de información extra en la oficina de turismo, donde nos indicaron todas las cosas que había para hacer. Precisamente, yo pedí alguna montaña para subir y me dijeron que había un pequeño cerro con una gran vista al embalse y con su sendero iniciando justo en la entrada de la Unidad Turística Embalse.

Since we were only 2 kilometers away, we walked there, and when we arrived at the tourist complex they had mentioned, we approached a church that caught our attention. There we saw someone else walking around, and we asked him if we could walk around there or if it was private property. He told us that the property was open to the public because it belonged to one of the hotels the government had built decades earlier, but which were now abandoned.

Como solo estábamos a 2 kilómetros de ese lugar, nos dirigimos caminando y cuando llegamos a la Unidad Turística que nos mencionaron, nos acercamos a una iglesia que llamó nuestra atención. Ahí vimos a una persona que también paseaba como nosotros, y le preguntamos si se podía caminar por ahí o era un lugar privado. Fue él quien nos contó que este predio tenía la entrada libre, ya que era de los hoteles que había construido el gobierno hace unas décadas atrás, pero que ahora estaban abandonados.

I think when he said "abandoned," my eyes lit up because I love places like this. Right then and there, my dad and I started looking for more information online about this place and found out it was a very famous spot to visit in Embalse, practically a must-see. Not only because of its history, but also because of the location of this tourist complex on the shores of the reservoir and the forest.

Creo que cuando dijo "abandonado" a mí se me iluminaron los ojos porque me encantan este tipo de lugares. Ahí mismo mi papá y yo nos pusimos a buscar más información en internet sobre este lugar y encontramos que era un punto muy famoso para visitar en Embalse, por no decir uno de los casi obligatorios para ver. No solo por toda su historia, sino también por la ubicación que tiene este complejo turístico a orillas del Embalse y el bosque.

The Embalse Tourist Unit is a complex of hotels and vacation bungalows built by the Ministry of Tourism in the 1940s. The idea behind this place was to offer a vacation spot for workers, with affordable prices but all the necessary amenities so people could relax with their families. It also aimed to increase the tourist profile of the city of Embalse, attracting visitors during the holiday seasons.

La Unidad Turística Embalse se trata de un complejo de hoteles y bungalows de vacaciones contruido por el Ministerio de Turísmo en la década del 40. La idea de este lugar era ofrecer un lugar de vacaciones para los trabajadores, contando con precios accesibles pero con todas las comodidades para que la gente pudiera descansar con sus familias. Además, tenía como propósito dar un poco más de visibilidad turística a la ciudad de Embalse.

In total, the entire complex comprises 7 hotels and 51 family bungalows, a swimming pool, sports courts, a children's playground, access to the reservoir shoreline, a chapel, medical services, and administrative offices. During its heyday in the 1970s, this resort offered full-board accommodations and was a popular destination for families experiencing their first vacation in a beautiful location. According to online reviews, the service was excellent, geared towards a discerning clientele.

En total, todo el complejo cuenta con 7 hoteles y 51 bungalows familiares, piscina, canchas de deportes, juegos para niños, acceso a la costa del embalse, capilla, servicio médico y oficinas de administración. En el momento de su auge de funcionamiento en la década del 70, este lugar ofrecía servicios de pensión completa y fue lugar para que muchas familias pasen vacaciones por primera vez en algún lugar hermoso. Según comentarios que leí en internet, el lugar tenía un servicio muy bueno, pensado para nivelar un poco las clases sociales al momento de tener un buen descanso del trabajo.

But over time, and with changes in government, including a period of military dictatorship, this complex slowly ceased operations as it was state-run. According to the internet, the last time the complex opened was about three years ago, but only two of the seven hotels were functioning. However, even this failed to attract visitors, as room prices were not competitive compared to other accommodations in the city of Embalse. Thus, the place gradually fell into disrepair and can now only be viewed from the outside.

Pero con el tiempo y con los cambios de gobierno, con dictadura miliar incluida en el medio, este complejo lentamente fue dejando de prestar sus servicios ya que dependía del Estado. Según internet, la última vez que abrió el complejo fue hace unos tres años, pero solo funcionaban dos de los siete hoteles. Sin embargo, ni siquiera esto tuvo éxito en atraer visitantes a estos hoteles ya que los precios de las habitaciones no resultaban nada competitivos frente a otros alojamientos en la ciudad de Embalse. Así fue como progresivamente este lugar fue quedando abandonado y ahora solo es posible visitarlo por fuera.

Throughout the entire visit, I was fascinated and couldn't believe how such a beautiful place had ended up like this. It made me very sad that no one can enjoy this space that seems frozen in time. Something worth noting is the excellent state of preservation of the facilities closest to the dam and the bungalows, as well as the well-trimmed and maintained grass: I think if no one told you this place was abandoned, you might not even realize it.

Durante todo el recorrido yo estuve fascinada y no pudiendo creer como este lugar tan hermoso había terminado así. Me dio mucha nostalgia que nadie pueda disfrutar de este espacio que parece detenido en el tiempo. Algo para recalcar es la buena conservación de las instalaciones que estan más cercanas al dique y de los bungalows, así como también el pasto que está bastante recortado y bien mantenido: creo que si nadie te avisa que este lugar está abandonado, quizás no te das cuenta.

Unfortunately, the same can't be said for the hotels located closer to the street. Two hotels stand out as particularly affected by vandalism, and some even have squatters living there. These hotels are significantly more run-down than the others, with broken windows, graffiti, and even things set on fire inside. Of course, I went near every window I could, but I was still a little afraid that something might startle me. They had a ghostly vibe.

Lamentablemente, no se puede decir lo mismo de los hoteles que les toca estar más cerca de la calle. Hay dos hoteles que son los que estan más afectados por el vandalismo y algunos hasta tienen algunos inquilinos ilegales viviendo ahí. Estos hoteles se ven bastante más deteriorados que los demás, con ventanas rotas, pintadas e incluso cosas prendidas fuego dentro. Por supuesto yo me acerqué a todas las ventanas que pude, pero igual me daba algo de miedo que algo me asustara. Se sentía como una vibra fantasmal en esos.

Another thing we learned while exploring this place online is that there's another similar, also abandoned, resort in a coastal city near Buenos Aires. It's the Chapadmalal Tourist Unit, with the same concept of offering low-cost tourism, but this time near the beach. It's a shame these complexes met such a sad end, because they were surely a good recreational option for middle- and lower-class families at the time.

Otra cosa que nos enteramos leyendo en internet a medida que recorríamos este lugar, es que hay otro lugar similar a este y también abandonado en una ciudad costera de Buenos Aires. Aquel es la Unidad Turística Chapadmalal, con el mismo concepto de ofrecer turismo a bajo costo pero esta vez cerca de la playa. Es una pena que estos complejos hayan tenido este triste final, porque seguramente en su momento resultaron una buena opción recreativa para las familias de clase media o baja.

My dad and I spent the whole afternoon exploring this complex, and we still didn't see everything. It was enormous, and having the satellite view was a huge help, because I think otherwise we would have struggled to find our way out; it was like a maze. We abandoned our plan to climb the hill, but I was so engrossed in looking at the abandoned hotels that I didn't really mind. Our last stop was Hotel 6, the only one on the other side of the road. Since it's the most exposed, it's naturally the most vandalized, but it still looked to be in decent condition. All the buildings showcased the architecture of the era in which they were built, with tiny rooms that didn't even have enough space for a TV. I would have loved to go inside, but my dad wouldn't let me 😂.

Mi papá y yo pasamos toda la tarde recorriendo este complejo y ni siquiera llegamos a verlo todo. Era inmenso y tener la vista satelital nos sirvió mucho, ya que creo que de lo contrario nos hubiese costado poder salir de ahí, era como un laberinto. Atrás quedó el plan de ir a subir el cerro, pero yo estaba tan entretenida viendo los hoteles abandonados que no me importó mucho. Nuestra última parada fue el hotel 6, que es el único que está al otro lado de la ruta. Como es el más expuesto, por supuesto es el de más vandalismo, pero aún así se veía en buenas condiciones. Todas las instalaciones mostraban su arquitectura propia de los años en los que se construyó, con habitaciones muy pequeñas sin ni siquiera espacio para una televisión. Me hubiese encantado poder entrar, pero mi papá no me dió permiso 😂.

I think if the tourist office worker had mentioned that this complex was abandoned, I wouldn't have been as surprised as discovering it in person. I suppose she thought we already knew and that's why she didn't say anything, but in the end, that detail added even more excitement to the afternoon. The abandoned Embalse Tourist Unit was one of the most curious places I visited in Córdoba, full of history and hidden corners to explore. We may have missed the view from the small hill, but we had an even better afternoon of urban exploration 😃.

Creo que si la de la oficina de turismo hubiese mencionado que este complejo estaba abandonado, no me hubiese sorprendido tanto como descubriéndolo in-situ. Supongo que ella pensaba que nosotros sabíamos esto y por eso no lo dijo, pero al final ese detalle terminó agregandole más emoción a esta tarde. La abandonada Unidad Turística Embalse fue uno de los lugares más curiosos que visité en Córdoba, lleno de historia y rincones para explorar. Nos habremos perdido la vista desde el pequeño cerro, pero nos llevamos una tarde de exploración urbana aún mejor 😃.
