Greetings, travelers!
A recent conversation with a friend about some great designs of the traffic lights refreshed my memories of this lovely town, called Akureyri, in Northern Iceland.
Why, you may ask. Here, in this beautiful town established at the end of one huge fjord, I have seen for the very first time a red traffic light shaped as a heart. No photo, unfortunately, as I was driving and the red light waiting time was just a few seconds. Still, I can't forget that. The shape was chosen perfectly!
That day I was traveling with friends and we had a couple of hours to enjoy Akureyri, so I insisted we visit its Botanical Garden.
Here is my most iconic photo of it, if I can say that, for starters :)
Now, first things first! :)
As we approached the town from East, I had the opportunity to see it in its full glory from away, from the other bank of the fjord:
It seemed calm but somehow I knew it is hiding lots of things!
I saw plenty of Art items on the streets and on the small gardens in front of the many buildings.
I found a free parking that wasn't very close to the Botanical Garden but that was an advantage, as there were many beautiful things to see and enjoy.
We passed by the Junior College. Once again, some art in front of it.
It was raining that day, as you can see. I didn't mind that at all, as the air was fantastic and people were hiding indoors. Everything was shiny and clean by the rain and I was able to fully enjoy the garden. Here's what I first saw.
Tempted to sit down? :)
So many nice touches...
I was literally seduced by the aroma of the blossoming flowers.
So many of them, let me show you a few and I will try not to tell only about the flowers and the amazing plants I saw in that Botanical garden...
The rain did wonders with them all...
The colors, so vivid and attractive.
I was enchanted by this thorny thing! :)
So now it has a few portraits by me, hehehe!
I could've spend days inside this garden!
Touching and caressing that dew grass...
Time was flying so fast. It was time to leave the garden so we see some other corners of the town for the remaining time we had.
Beautiful street, washed by the rain, with a small beautiful red roofed church.
The most of the houses had the construction year on the front, each of them with its own "font".
Getting a different route on the way back to the car, we got to the "Akureyrarkirkja" or Church of Akureyri.
It looked amazing from outside. It is a Lutheran Church.
Impressive and humbling front, isn't it?
I was hoping to hear some organ music, but, well, not at this time, so this gives me another reason to get back again to this place and spend more time there!
In a few moments, continuing our walk, I noticed these staircases and they somehow reminded my about parasols and spending some leisure and lazy time on the sea shore...
Not a real bear, don't be afraid! :)
Passed by this strange, interesting and creative art installation.
It has several items on, this was my favorite, hands can tell stories, too, I would say!
Streets, art and more...
Akureyri, it seems I miss you so much! :)

Wow, thanks so much @choogirl and the whole team! :)
I would say that the building itself is a work of art, not just what is in front of it. As it's every building you showed us. Especially the church. And the botanical garden too. And OMG, the plants themselves inside are also such special works of art! 😊

Great post @lightcaptured! You took me back to this fantastic country and Akureyri. Unfortunately we skipped the botanical garden because of the rain😯. I know the saying that there is no bad weather, only bad clothes, but still,... On the other hand, I was quick enough 😉 at the traffic lights to take a photo of this unique red light, which I also saw here for the first time.
Yes! That's the one! Great that you managed to shoot this :)
Thanks so much!

Oh wow. Such beautiful plants in such a rough landscape!
I've been to Iceland and I love it there. The people are friendly, maybe a little skeptical at first sometimes, but that is a good thing in my book.
Once you try to speak some Icelandic they usually warm up really quick and are good lads to hang around with. Gosh another place I want to visit again. I've been only in the south, but the northern parts I want to travel also!
Thanks for sharing and awaking my own memories :)
Have a good time
Welcome and likewise :)
To speak Icelandic? Hmmm. I have to wake up my Viking roots, perhaps :) If there are such, I can't tell :D
I had the pleasure to execute perfectly a planned full round trip on Road #1, it was quite the adventure :)
That´s how Heaven would be..
Amazing place to visit, but Why is so far from Argentina? 🤣
Nice post and congrats! GreetingS!
Thank you! :)
Well, lots of places are far away from Argentina, I'd say, especially from its most Southern part! :D
Your photos are so soulful. The scenery is so stunning. So beautiful
I am happy you liked my photos, hopefully my story as well :)
