Mercury: Though the least in the Kingdom of God, the Solar System, it is nevertheless of the greatest importance, on account of its influence upon body, soul and spirit, which is shown by the fact that its symbol contains all the component parts of the planetary symbolism, namely, the circle, half-circle and cross. This is because in the mind all are linked together in one whole physico- spiritual organism called man. Without Mercury this could not be.

Mercury is neutral however, and it depends upon the indwelling Ego represented by the centrally placed circle whether it will use its divine attributes of choice and free-will to aspire heavenward for soul-growth as symbolized by the signature of the soul, the half-circle, placed above the circle of spirit, or whether it will stoop towards the cross of personality below the circle and wallow in the mire of worldliness. No creature has such divine possibilities as man, none many aspire higher, and conversely, none may fall lower. This struggle between the higher and the lower natures for mastery, symbolized by the half-circle and the cross which

are placed above and below the circle in the symbol of Mercury, was well voiced by Goethe in the lines of his immortal "Faust" where the hero says:
"Thou by one sole impulse art posses'd, Unconscious of the other still remain.
Two souls alas are housed within my breast, And struggle there for undivided reign.
One to the earth with passionate desire, And closely clinging organs still adheres, Above the mists the other doth aspire, With sacred ardor unto purer spheres."
I've learned to be both reverent and suspicious of Mercury. As the planet of language, Mercury is both a Magician and a Trickster. There's magic in Mercury's words. Through prayer and sacred mantras, words link us to the gods; through the power of naming, words encourage our mastery over chaos; through language, we communicate with others; we invent, build, change minds, and reshape our world. Through the power of words we may sometimes forget who we are, and think of ourselves as gods. Of course we're not. And that's why Mercury is a Trickster, blithely placing banana peels under our feet when we're not looking. Mercury sneaks words into our mouths that derail and humble us, reminding us that at one time or another, everyone will play the fool. This is why we adore celebrity scandals-they take the spotlight off our own clown suit.

Stephen King chartStephen King writes thrillers, mysteries, and fantasy books. He is very popular. His Mercury is in Libra, just inside the fourth house cusp, and is conjunct Neptune. This gives him imagination, fantasy, and an ability to think “what if….”. He takes ordinary life and turns it around to show how it might have been if something unusual took place. This is his Mercury in Libra seeing the other side. Mercury rules his third house of writing and communication. His Sun is in Mercury ruled Virgo in the third house.

Mercury is in a sextile aspect to the Moon, the ruler of the chart. King sets his books in his home state of Maine. He writes about families. It is also sextile the Saturn-Pluto combination which bring out the dark side of his mind. He writes of the things that one fears. The connection to Saturn helps him be a hard worker, gives him the ability to keep going and produce a large body of work. He is able to write non–fiction and has written one of the best books on how to be a good writer called On Writing.
