What you never thought hope can do for you is what sometimes in life you find hope doing for you.
Most of you, my readers, may not have come across the movie "The Sandman".. You can find it on Netflix.
I just want to draw some profound life's message I feel we all need as we journey in life.
First of all let me do a short background review about the movie just so you won't be lost in all I'm about to say.
In The Sandman (Netflix series), Hope is not a character with a physical form or name like others—Dreams,Lucifer,Death,Desire, etc.... she is more of a symbolic presence, but she played a crucial part in Episode 4: "A Hope in Hell".
Here’s the key moment:
🔥The Duel Between Dream and Lucifer
Dream travels to Hell to reclaim his stolen helm. To win it back, he must engage in a battle of wits and imagination called it The Oldest Game With Lucifer Morning Star.
In the game,
Each opponent(Dream and Lucifer) takes turns in imagining themselves as increasingly powerful or destructive beings, trying to dominate the other
(It's like saying, "who would win the other by trying to imagine what is more powerful than what the other opponent would imagine?" ... It was a game of imagining something(a concept or thing) that would be more powerful than what the opponent has imagined... The one who imagines the thing or concept that is stronger...wins the game!)
So, Lucifer,by imagining,becomes a wolf, then a serpent, then a plague, then anti-life itself—total obliteration.
(Question. "what could be more powerful than anti-life?)
And with each turn they took to imagine themselves, Dream kept loosing and was battered down.
Lucifer ends her round by declaring herself as “anti-life, the dark at the end of everything, the end of universes, the end of gods, the end of worlds... I am nothing.”
This created a sense of loss in the mind of Dream.
It seems impossible for Dream to respond. Think about it, What could defeat nothingness?
But then, all of a sudden.. Dream utters one quiet, defiant line:
“I... am hope.”
And just like that, Lucifer is silenced. She cannot overcome hope... 😂.
See my friends, in life, there are some things we shouldn't forget in life...
1.Hope is the ultimate power against dispair.
Thats why when some bad things wants to happen...when unseen forces want to combat and conquer a man, the first part of that man they go after is hope in that man
**No matter how dark life gets, hope is the one thing that darkness can’t comprehend or overcome.
It’s not strength, wealth, or knowledge that wins the battle—it’s the refusal to give in to nothingness.**
2.Hope Isn’t Loud, But It’s Unshakable
Hope doesn’t shout like pride or rage like vengeance. She whispers, stands quietly, and simply refuses to bow. When everything is stripped away, hope doesn’t flee. She stays.
True hope isn’t naïve—it’s resilient.
It doesn’t deny the pain; it survives in spite of it.
3.You Can Lose Everything and Still Win
Dream, in the movie,had lost almost all his tools in that movie—his bag of sand, his helm, his ruby. Even his pride had been battered. Yet in that moment, what he still had—hope—proved more powerful than everything he had lost.
You may lose your resources, your confidence, even your direction. But if you hold on to hope, you are not defeated.
4.Hope Is a Choice, Not a Feeling
In the duel, Dream didn’t feel hopeful—he chose hope.
That’s key.
Even when the enemy ( Lucifer) becomes “nothing,” Dream’s counter isn’t logic or strength, but belief. And he chose that belief.
Hope is a decision we make even when everything screams that it’s over.
That’s what gives it power: not its ease, but its defiance.
5.Hope Can Reclaim Purpose
Dream’s journey in The movie is more than a quest for lost items—it's a rediscovery of purpose. And that rediscovery only became possible because he held on to hope, even in hell, the very domain of Lucifer.
Hope is the compass that helps us find direction again when we’ve been knocked off course.
