Yes! I’m back on the trucks after far too many years working as a car mechanic and I could not be happier.
My career began with heavy goods vehicles and I’m classified as a fully qualified HGV mechanic, however, somewhere along the way I drifted from trucks. At first I shifted over to repairing trailers and then after that ended up repairing light domestic vehicles. In hindsight it has been quite advantageous to have gained a versatile skill set but always in the back of my mind I’ve wanted to return to work on HGVs.
The catalyst to my return has been the brutal cost of living increase. Light vehicle mechanics really don’t get paid what we’re worth, especially considering how technical new vehicles have become. Nowadays, if you want to be considered a competent mechanic, you have to be a skilled electrician as well as being a mechanical technician. With that in mind, to be paid little more than a shelf stacker is an absolute piss-take. Unless you’re self employed this is best you can expect to be paid.
I squeezed every penny I could out of my previous employer but after the cost of living skyrocketed I found myself broke a week before my next pay check. Nobody should work all week in any job and find themselves just getting by, so I thought, “that’s it, I’ve had enough. I’m worth more than this!”…
Due to the lack of qualified and reliable HGV mechanics, wages in this sector have increased dramatically over the last few years, so thank goodness I’ve got experience working on HGVs and a recognised qualification to reassure an employer, otherwise I’d have been in quite a pickle.
I’ve been apprehensive about stepping back into HGV mechanics as things have moved on a lot and I know I’d probably have to go through a sharp learning curve in order to catch up. Finally though, I buried my insecurities and applied for a new job as a HGV mechanic and was successful. I was over the moon to get this job and I’m now working for one of the UK’s biggest HGV retailers.
I now have the pleasure of working on every different make and model of HGV and having that variety to work with will pay dividends when it comes to relearning my trade.
For now I have to bide my time while I reacquaint myself with these vehicles. It is quite frustrating at times feeling like an apprentice in a trade I used to be confident in. Processes that were second nature are now tasks that I have to recall and sometimes I find myself doubting or 2nd-guessing what I’m doing. This move has certainly put me out of my comfort zone but I have to keep telling myself to look at the bigger picture. In time I’ll be up to speed and never again will I have to worry about working in exchange for just enough money to get by. Furthermore, I’ve always preferred working on HGVs. It makes you feel like a kid again, surrounded by giant dumper trucks and playing with hydraulic grabbers all day, not to mention the tools we use too!
Everything is big and loud, just how I remember it. And what’s cooler than driving a big old truck?!
Congrats on getting the new job. I hope you will settle in and feel comfortable soon.
I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project which will be highlighted in the next post!
Thanks for your support and kind words, much appreciated 👍 just got to get stuck in and not break anything expensive in the meantime 🤣

Greetings friend seeing those trucks reminds me of the transformers movie one can be an adult but always something of a child we have and I can imagine what you feel with the clamps and repairing the trucks.
🤣 I was going to make a transformer reference in my title but decided on something different. Should have stuck with it.
Good for the next title
Nice bro.
The first pic is a Renault with Volvo running gear and daf parts, the worst lorries on the road in my opinion. I'll drive any truck, so long as it's a Scania.
Great job matey.
What a mongrel truck it is!
Scania fan are you? Reminds me of the guy who taught me during my apprenticeship, he was a total fanboy. Never knew you were a trucker!
Yes mate, been driving for 15years now. I've driven them all and scania is hands down the best in my opinion.
I would love to fix them and I even applied for an apprenticeship at royal mail, I got through to the interview stage then realised you needed gcse's which I don't. These new lorries need laptops to fix them now with the amount of computers in them.
You did well mate and I'm sure you'll enjoy it, good on ya pal.
Thanks bud. I can’t disagree with you about Scania, they are a quality truck. You’re right about the laptop being an integral part of the modern day toolbox. It’s crazy how advanced vehicles are but 90% of it is all for emissions control and otherwise needless. It’s a shame Royal Mail required GCSEs. I didn’t do very well at school and I remember my first boss asking to look at my hands during the interview…”yes, they look like worker hands”, he said. 🤣🤣
Congrats on your new job, and with a good pay package, that certainly helps under the current environment. It seems like any job related to HGV - mechanics, drivers etc will do well nowadays as I heard HGV drivers are paid very well as well.
Thank you 🙏 Yes, the drivers get paid handsomely nowadays and it's quite a bit easier for them too with all the health and safety regs. Good to see HGV employers delving into their deep pockets at last, if only car companies would do the same. It will come though as every company is finding it almost impossible to employ fully qualified mechanics.
when it comes to improving our economy, we are willing to do the work that best pays off for us, the fact that you feel like an apprentice again will only be for a brief moment
You have to do what you can to get by and maximise on your abilities. I remember feeling this way when I started on light vehicles but most places are cool with you as long as you have a good work ethic.
Congratulations friend! You will soon become familiar with it and I wish you all the best.
Thanks bud! I'm starting to get back in the groove of things and learning does keep things interesting too.
