Two teams with different ambitions clashed on a Friday night. Leicester City hosted Newcastle United as Leicester City hope to cement their place in the top 4 with Chelsea and West Ham breathing down their neck while Newcastle United would love to move to 39 points to confirm their safety in the league for the next season.
Newcastle United achieved their feat at the detriment of Leicester City who dropped points yet again with Chelsea still on their trail. United is ahead of Leicester City with 4 points and they still hold 2 games in hand over Villa and Liverpool. The season is getting more interesting in the race for the top 4.
Leicester City were stunned with a brilliant and strong performance from Newcastle as they lost 4-2 on the night.
Newcastle should have gotten ahead so early in the game when Wilson raced on goal and unselfishly laid a pass to Saint-Maximin inside the box. Saint-Maximin was unable to place his shot well and Schmeichel brilliantly saved the effort. What a save.
Not to be denied for long and in the 22nd minute, Willock dispossessed Soyuncu and expertly scored to continue his good run of form. In the 34th minute, Leicester City's woes were compounded as Dummett scored with a lovely header from a corner kick delivery to make it 2-0.
Newcastle United stretched their lead in the 64th minute when Castagne was unable to stop Wilson's charge. He raced clear on goal and rounded up the goalkeeper before slotting it home into the empty net 3-0. He doubled his tally in the 73rd minute to make it 4-0 when a perfectly weighted Almiron's pass found him. He hit his shot but it came off the post, he gathered the rebound and slotted it into the unguarded net to complete the rout.
Never to take any defeat lying down, Leicester City mustered a last rallying cry in the 80th minute when Vardy laid a pass for the onrushing Albrighton who smashed home his effort into the top right-hand corner of the post. Leicester City got the second goal in the 87th minute through Iheanacho to bring about a nearby ending but it wasn't enough. He cuts inside and drilled another lovely near post ball into the back of the net.
The game ended 4-2 in favour of Newcastle United who took a giant step towards safety. Leicester City needed this win but it wasn't to be and they are facing Manchester United, Chelsea (twice - League and a cup final) and then Liverpool. They need to hold on to their dear lives with these jaw-dropping matches coming for them if they want to secure a top 4 finish with just a few games to go.
