Why did PSG have a slight advantage since the beginning?
For Bayern Munich, the absence of Lewandowski clearly reduces their attacking potential, he is their main goalscorer and without him, it would be much more difficult to defeat a top rival such as PSG. On the other hand, when it comes to PSG, knowing that Lewandowski isn't on the pitch allows them to focus a little bit more of their energy and attention in their attacking plays. It is always a relief when the best player of your rival isn't on the pitch, and this is a small psychological advantage for PSG.
Another factor conditioning this game was that last season these teams were the best ones in Europe. They both won all of their national trophies, and in the continental trophy, the Champions League, they both reached the finals with Bayern Munich winning that match 1-0. Football always allows teams new opportunities to get revenge and in this case, it only took a year for these teams to have each other as rivals once again. It is clear that PSG's players are butthurt after losing the Champions League final last year, so this is an extra incentive for them.
I also mentioned in my yesterday's article that I saw PSG as the favorite one but not by much. Mbappe is getting better year after year, and Neymar is entering into his mature age so it would be expected for these 2 stars to continue to improve their performance as time goes on. Bayern Munich's is in the opposite situation with its 2 main attacking players because Muller and the already mentioned Lewandowski are already deep into their mature age, so it is unlikely to see them improve their performance in the coming years.
So to summarize, the absence of Bayern's best player, PSG's thirst for revenge after last year's defeat, and the constantly improving performance of PSG's 2 main stars (Mbappe and Neymar) are enough factors to give this team the edge.
How was the match?
The final result was obviously tight but the first goal actually happened quite soon in less than 3 minutes of play. It was a quick play from PSG in which Neymar approaches the area with Mbappe by his side, gives him the ball and then Mbappe makes a regular shot but with a lot of power which made it impossible for Neuer to stop. Mbappe's shot could have been better but what's important is that the ball ended up inside the net.
Neymar was very active, he attempted his typical dribbling moves and as usual, he suffered a few faults. In the first half an hour I noticed Bayern Munich's structure felt more secure despite being down on the scoreboard but this match would end up becoming an example that sometimes superstars can defeat a more well-rounded team.
Mbappe was super effective with his effort which usually ended in good attacking opportunities for PSG. He constantly proves that he is absolutely an elite player and I am thinking he might have a shot at becoming the best player in the world this season if wins an important trophy with either his club (Champions League) or with his national team (European Cup). He had could have scored another goal in the first half but his performance was still spectacular.
When it comes to Bayern Munich, Lewandowski's absence had a clear impact on their plays. They constantly approached Keylor Navas but most times they were unable to produce a satisfactory ending to their plays. This is a dominant team that is top-notch on all zones of the pitch, but without their main goalscorer, they were just less dangerous than usual, even though they created good approaches to PSG's penalty box time and time again.
In fact, if you look at the match's statistics, you will notice that Bayern did multiple times more shots than PSG despite scoring less in the end. The reason for this is that Mbappe was super effective, and Bayern didn't have their effective player. Keylor Navas also had good saves in some of Bayern's attacks.
I was surprised to see how the second PSG's goal came to because it was defensive oversight from Bayern's defense that left Marquinhos alone facing the goalkeeper. Marquinhos is an absolute beast as a central defender, plus, he is also a great header. Not having their best defender for so many minutes (he got injured around the 32-minute mark) would eventually allow Bayern to score 2 goals and keep themselves alive for the next match. Minutes after Marquinhos was forced to leave the pitch, Bayern scored their first goal with a great header by Choupo-Moting. I think this goal wouldn't have happened with Marquinhos on the pitch.
In the second half, I noticed Bayern Munich a little bit nervous at the beginning, which isn't normal in them. This is usually a very serene team in control of their emotions but I started to notice signs of frustration in some player's gestures. Luckily for them, they scored their second goal in the 60-minute mark thanks to a header by Muller and they tied the match. Both of Bayern's goals were headers, and I couldn't stop thinking how sad it was for PSG to lose their best defending header due to an injury. This second goal also proved that Bayern is super competitive and they can always come back no matter the circumstances. Once they tie the match, I thought the emotional momentum was in their favor.
However, Mbappe once again made a terrific appearance and scored a tremendous goal after a very fast counterattack. This guy is destroying every major rival in the Champions League, he scored 4 goals against Barcelona in the round of 16, and now in the first match against Bayern, he already scored 2. The defenders were unable to stop his movements, Mbappe is faster, more precise, and has almost perfect aim when shooting. It must be horrible for the defenders to play against this elite striker. I think Mbappe will have another good match next week because I don't see how can Bayern stop him as well as Neymar. This match is an example that elite players can make their team win over a rival team that's more organized. Bayern dominated the statistics of the match, and they also had more dominant group moves while doing their attacking plays, but the superior skills of Neymar, and especially Mbappe gave PSG the victory.
Whats next?
The second match is next week and 2-3 is a tight result so anything can happen. If Neymar and Mbappe are inspired next week I don't think there is anything that Bayern can do to defeat them. However, if Marquinhos doesn't recover and is unable to play the second match, then this weakness on the defensive side could allow Bayern to score the necessary goals. If we count goals after Marquinhos's injury it would be 2 goals for Bayern and 1 for PSG. This is important to notice because Bayern has several players that are great headers, and the same cannot be said about PSG. Without Marquinhos, PSG's best header, I suspect Bayern would once against try to exploit this weakness.
The next match I plan to see will be on Saturday, the Spanish Classic between Real Madrid and Barcelona. None of these teams are in the first position, but since Atletico Madrid is showing signs of fatigue, it is becoming more and more likely for either Real Madrid or Barcelona to snatch the first position from them. This Clasico will be key in determining who wins the Spanish League.
