NCAA Football Week 12: An Expected Disappointment

I knew going into this weekend that I probably wasn't going to be very happy coming out on the other side of it. At least when it comes to college football. Basketball and the NFL went quite a bit better, but this post isn't about those things.

If you read my post from last week, I was pretty dang close in picking the games that were going to be really good this past weekend. Unfortunately, the Michigan State/Illinois game wasn't one of them.

As I said, it wasn't totally unexpected. Illinois was ranked in the top 25 at one or two points this season, so I knew it wouldn't be an easy job for the Spartans to come away with the victory. Unfortunately, with their 38 to 16 loss this past weekend, it is looking even less likely that MSU is going to make it to a bowl game around the holidays.

In fact, at this point even beating Purdue isn't a sure thing anymore. That's a hard truth to swallow right there...

As I said though, on a lot of the other games I did a pretty good job. A good job of determining if it would be an exciting game. My betting profile would show that I didn't do a good job of picking who would be the winner.

For example, (20)Clemson versus Pitt. I thought it might be a close game, but I had Pitt coming out on top. The 24 to 20 win by Clemson definitely made for a good game, but it left me $2 shorter in my betting account.

(17)Colorado gave Utah a beat down 49 to 24. I thought that one might have been closer, but I am glad I didn't say anything now. (2) Ohio State had an expected 31 to 7 win over Northwestern, and (3) Texas beat Arkansas 20 to 10.

After an impressive start to the season, Navy has since fallen from grace and that tumble from undefeated continued with a 35 to 0 smashing by (25) Tulane.

(10) Alabama easily handled Mercer 52 to 7, and (4) Penn State had an equally easy time against Purdue beating them 49 to 10. Stanford started the upsets this weekend with a 38 to 35 win over (19) Louisville and Florida continued it with a 27 to 16 win over (22) LSU.

If I remember correctly, I also said that (21) South Carolina home game against (23) Missouri might be pretty good too. Turns out I was right with SC taking down Missouri 34 to 30. Arizona State didn't want to be left out of the upset category, so they sent (16) Kansas State home with a 24 to 14 loss.

The one game I was a bit off on was the (13) Boise State versus San Jose State game. I guess I can't be right all the time as that was a 42 to 21 whopping by Boise State.

Probably the most exciting game of the weekend was (1) Oregon versus Wisconsin. I have to give lots of props to the Badgers for keeping it so close. I watched the end of the game and I really wasn't sure which way it was going to fall. Ultimately, Oregon took the 16 to 13 victory and remained undefeated. So sad.

(12) Georgia beat (7) Tennessee in another upset 31 to 17, but honestly the game was a lot closer than that score makes it look. Heading into the fourth quarter I think Georgia was only up by one score.

Finally, we have two more upsets to close out the weekend. New Mexico edged out (18) Washington State 38 to 35, and in what some might consider the biggest upset of the weekend, Kansas took down (6) BYU 17 to 13.

Some might argue, it wasn't really that big of an upset give strength of schedule, but it's important to note that his is BYU's first loss of the season and therefore they fall out of the shortening list of undefeated teams.
