Without my glasses I wouldn't have seen this little guy, or better said, I wouldn't have regognized this yellow thing as a ... well, some of you might think it is a caterpillar and I have thought wrong too. |

little yellow worm thing
After I had not found any caterpillars which looked like this little yellow thing, I just called it "little yellow worm thing" until I realized, that I shouldn't have searched for caterpillars only. Not I am pretty sure that it is the Larvae of a Tenthredinidae which is a Sawfly, but I still haven't found the exact kind of Sawflies this larvae belongs to. Maybe it's a Redheaded Pine Sawfly, but that's just a guess and it's head is orange and not red. |

About a month ago I had a nice morning walk at the reservoir, when I saw something yellow on a flower, but I needed to put on my glasses to recognize this little beauty. |

The Worm
Dickie found a broken spade
And said he'd dig himself a well;
And then Charles took a piece of tin,
And I was digging with a shell.
Then Will said he would dig one too.
We shaped them out and made them wide,
And I dug up a piece of clod
That had a little worm inside.
We watched him pucker up himself
And stretch himself to walk away.
He tried to go inside the dirt,
But Dickie made him wait and stay.
His shining skin was soft and wet.
I poked him once to see him squirm.
And then Will said, "I wonder if
He knows that he's a worm."
And then we sat back on our feet
And wondered for a little bit.
And we forgot to dig our wells
Awhile, and tried to answer it.
And while we tried to find it out,
He puckered in a little wad,
And then he stretched himself again
And went back home inside the clod.

Wow, thank you so much for your extensive research, @thekittygirl, I didn't expect anybody to do such a research, but that's great.
I have also found quite a few similar larvae and lots of information in several forums, but nothing concrete, and then I gave up because I thought that Tenthredinidae and Sawfly should be enough information anyway 😉

So your lockdown will be losened by the end of next week? You must be happy to be able to move freely again after so long. Here in Austria life is almost as normal as it was before the crisis began. Most people don't care anymore, although especially now we should take care ... we'll see.

BEER.You did well to spot the colorful little caterpillar, Johann or at least I think it is a caterpillar. Perhaps going to become a moth or butterfly.
The caterpillar of the Urbanus proteus ( long tailed skipper) looks a little like this one.

I have found many caterpillars and also larvae which looked similar, but the only ones which looked the same were only called "sawfly larvae" and no concrete name I could use. Thank you so much for searching too 👍🙂

You are right Johann. I woke and couldn’t go back to sleep so got up and made coffee and later some blueberry pancakes. I had coffee and pancake and was going to do a WednesdayWalk post from my Lady Slipper search but went back to bed and got a couple hours more sleep.💤

What I do know is that it's colors warn the birds not to eat it.

I think it is the larvae of a Sawfly because I still haven't found anything else about it and I don't search any longer, but anyway, thank you that you like the photos, @papilloncharity 🙂
I wonder if all birds believe that this color means the worm tastes bad or is poisonous, because sometimes such colors only pretend that the insect tastes bad or is dangerous ;)

We just looked at a Sawfly catterpillar and it does look very similar, although the colors differ, as the ones we found are all more white.
Another mystery is that how can birds instinctively know that bright red and yellow is poison in insects, yet they eat bright yellow and red fruit?
You are right as many non poisonous insects masquerade with poisonous colors as their defense.
But there are birds like the Thrushes that can figure them out.
Just the ingenuity that is found in nature my friend.
I know what a pain it can be to search for an unknown insect Sir @johannpiber.
But at least you tried!

There are many different kinds of these Sawflies and many of their larvae look similar.
Insects move and fruits don't ;) lol - I have no idea 😉
It's good that some birds know that these insects are edible, otherwise they might become too many and a problem. That's how mother nature regulates it.
I have had harder searches, and at least I tried and I think I came very close to the correct name of it :)

And you are right to know that the circle of life for everything in nature is complete.
Such a pity that mankind is forever trying to destroy it.
