15 days later, 15 years old

in Three Challengesyesterday (edited)

It took me 15 days to participate in this Challenge. First I had to make up my mind and then I needed to get my hands on the photo album. That was taken care of by my Mamani.

She came to visit me recently. She spent - I think - less than 5 hours here because she took advantage of a round trip that a family friend had. And among all the food and other articles she always brings with her, I asked not to forget that memory of my 15th birthday.

Until now I didn't have a title for this post. I think maybe something is coming up because Miss mipiano called us to this challenge 15 days ago.

I've needed courage for this, I'm not going to lie to you. And since I mentioned the word memories, I think I can go down this road.

The year was 1995.

From that time the strongest memories I have are of pre-university studies; however, I don't remember if by then I had already decided that I wanted to study journalism. I remember that I sometimes ran away from school to buy a banana milkshake and to go to the baseball stadium. In this particular case, the television cameras gave us away and when we arrived at the scholarship, the teachers called us to the headmaster's office to reprimand us. One day we also eloped to go on a crazy adventure at night with some boys in a car rented by a friend. I went as a chaperone because I wasn't really interested in that kind of exploration and encounters. I don't remember how many boyfriends I had that year, I think one, and he lasted as long as a meringue at a school gate, but I do remember being deeply in love with a guy who was an ace programmer, so smart, and had Asian facial features. He was so white, looked like ivory, and could hardly speak. His face and smile still linger in my mind. I wonder where he is today and if he graduated from something related to his passion. Of course, it was a platonic love, nothing ever happened.

I'm writing to see if I remember anything concrete from my 15's. Okay, there was no money back then. The 90s, mind you, in the middle of the special period. And I do remember that I had no interest in a 15th birthday party, nor in photos... but my parents always made sacrifices to give me and my sister everything so that we wouldn't be less than our friends. So I had my little photo album and they also bought me new clothes. I don't remember being excited about this, but I was grateful. And in the end, it was fun. To do so, I travelled many kilometres from the city where I was studying to the village where I grew up... Let me tell you this, give me a chance before I share the photos.

It turns out that every 11 days we used to go in buses from the Federico Engels Pre-university, in the western city of Pinar del Río, to the railway station to board a ‘milk train’, I don't know why they called it that, but what I do know and remember is that it broke down a lot and that it never left on time. Hours would go by before that thing would whistle and start moving. In our hearts we carried the joy of returning home, but also the worry about the time and the fatigue that the journey entailed. Because the truth is that I don't remember a single afternoon when the damn train didn't break down, that's why sometimes I used to escape with two friends to make auto-stops on the highway in order to get to my parents' house in Candelaria in less time.

And so the day of the photos arrived and the crazy adventure took place in Artemisa, at my maternal grandparents' house. I remember that a neighbour offered to do the make-up. We brought a box of clothes and accessories for the photo studio and it was so funny that I, even though I hated it, had to laugh at the things that happened while we were there.

This photo can be titled Oh... Zenin. That was the boy's name—the platonic love of pre-university days.

Poor Mamani and Papaenzo, these photos are not even well taken and cost a lot of money.
😩

Thinking about this photo thing, I have almost no photos of myself from back then. I suppose that what little money there was had to be spent on more vital things. I don't remember my mum or dad or anyone else in my family using cameras either.

My sister and I always laugh at the only photo we have because Tita, my great aunt, took us to the Artemisa studio. It's a photo of me and my sister with Yeti, a dog I had at the time, a very hairy dog that looked like it had braids. Ah, that photo was already published in Hive. Check it out here.

Well, I'm already in this mood and I'm going to share one of my favourites. I don't remember whose clothes made me look so elegant.

What I feel when I see these photos is so strange, because this is simply not me. I don't even paint my nails in colours. The most I can do is wear glitter on them. Look at my hair, they put me in rollers or Tita made me do the cool wave, because my hair is sparse and straight.

Ok, I had this kind of photos and they bring back nice memories. At least they were simple and without so much paraphernalia.

And the next photograph I'll share with you is nanixxx in her final year at college, preparing the documentary for the thesis with which I graduated. I'm not sure if I've already posted this photo here on Hive, you'll have to forgive me but I can't remember. There are more than 400 posts written and I'm too lazy to go through them now. What I can do is to bring a bonus snap at the end of this one.

🤷‍♀

Here I had already had a tantrum and went to a place to have my hair cut, with a machine. Take all this hair off, I told the barber. And I felt free.

With my sister @anixaeva who will hopefully one day return to Hive.

Photo books to celebrate reaching the age of 15 is a custom that has been maintained for years. This is done in many ways depending on the aspirations of the girl... or boy, and what their parents or family in general can afford. Photographers or Studios have many options or packages that they make available to their clients with suggestions of locations and even costumes to please the most demanding. Generally, it is a very expensive service. It always has been.

For those who want parties, some people have businesses that organise these types of events and of course, also include photographers to document the whole experience. I found this page with options and prices to give you an idea. I'm not sure if it's up to date.

I believe that trains "lecheros" existed all over Cuba. I used to travel every weekend on one for the Central University. I seem to have heard that they owe the name "lechero" to their multiple stops along the route, like the milkman who went from door to door leaving the liter of milk (that was before our era 😃😃😃😃). There were also the special trains that were faster and stopped only at major stations.

I like to look at old photos. In this digital age we take pictures of everything, and anyone with a simple phone can. In the 90's and back it was a whole process, even getting the photo printed.

I liked the photo where you are dressed as a ¿china? 😃😃😃🌷

Yes, it stopped at every station to drop off students. And to top it all, it broke down. There were days when I arrived in Candelaria at night. It was only a weekend break after eleven days of study and I lost a whole day on that trip.

It was a set of skirt and blouse, but the blouse had an Asian touch, yes.

Thank you! 😇

I knew you were going to put your special touch to this story. I laughed a lot remembering the odyssey it was to get those pictures of your quinceañera. As a curious fact I will tell you that to raise the money that they cost almost half a year I had to raise a pig at a friend's house, sell it and almost didn't have enough to pay for the photos. But it was worth the sacrifice, today you have a beautiful memory. Those were hard times in Cuba, but we found a way for you and your sister to have pictures. It was worth it. Kisses.💋🎉😁🥰

Ay Mamani. Apoteósico...😶 no sé si reír o llorar. Vamos a reír... estamos vivos. 😂

How pretty in your fifteen-year-old photos, I don't have photos of my fifteen, at least not these classic ones. I didn't want to take studio photos. You look very well made up. The nineties were difficult, but we got through them and even had fun in the midst of that chaos, which is what it's like to be young haha.

Cheers

Many years have passed, the lines of memory are fading. My mother reminded me that to pay for the photos she had to raise a pig for more than half a year and then sell it. It was quite a feat to feed it every day.

And when it came to paying for the photos, she could hardly make ends meet.

Well, the past is there to teach us lessons and remind us that we have to go on and prepare for a better future.

Thank you, @jordy0827. 😇

Ohh nanixxx I was surprised to see your photos jiji why is that? You are very beautiful in your 15, but as you yourself say, it's not you 😂 you are still beautiful but in a different way, it's you 🤭. I didn't have a photo album because I didn't want to but anyway my mother took me to a studio and took a picture of me for a huge painting 🤭 that is still hanging in my parents' house 😅. I'm curious and I read the comment of our friend @mdrguez ☺️ in love with the same boy 😂 things of life 🤣🤣 I really enjoyed reading you and seeing your pictures, nice night😘😘😘

Hola Mayra, esa coincidencia me ha dado mucha risa...
Qué probabilidades hay de que eso suceda??? jajajajajajaja...ay la vida!!

Jaja así es🤣 qué casualidad tan casual 🤣🤣🤣

Hahaha... thank you. 😍

She and I were meant to meet because the Universe put us close many times in many ways. Nothing is by chance in this life.

Wonderful ❤️ There is so much grace and magic in looking back at our journey aka going down memory lane. Photos are snapshots of the inner adventure, beautiful, and precious.

I think I have changed something during that journey and I have certainly learned a lot. Sometimes I wish I had known everything I know today since that moment.

Today would be different.

Thank you. ✨

And so we saw little Amanda before she becomes badass @nanixxx :)

Lovely!

I wouldn't dare to show pictures of me as a teenager. I think boys are cursed to look terrible during those years :)

LOL... see @mdrguez read here.
Man, my name is not Amanda 🤣. We've got everyone at Hive confused.

(I can't stop laughing...😂)

Haha, I wasn't sure but I said it anyway to see your response :)

Of course it is @mdrguez fault :)

Hahahahahaha ay Amanda!!!! there are many confused ones...it is an inner joke of us, we call each other Amanda. It's actually nicer than our real names 🤣🤣🤣🤣

See my Instagram profile (I set it up there at the top of my page) if you want to know.

I hope you are well and that the projects continue to move forward.

;)

OK I see!

But I still think that Amanda is more mysterious :)

Cheers!

🤣 Yeap. If you knew where it came from you'd burst out laughing.

O.K. I won't ask here but if we ever meet in person, you'll tell me all about it!

Lovely memories, the pictures are very good, in the standard of the day, you haven't changed much over the years,

I got a small album with less than 15 photos and they have serious focus problems.

That I haven't changed much over the years, I'll take that as a compliment for which I'll be very grateful... you're a gentleman.

We didn't have this tradition in our country, but we had a closing dinner when finishing the elementary school (14/15 years) and probably that was the first time I used a bit of make up. On the bonus photo you look a lot older than your sister, more than the real difference in years.

🤔 Huh, you're right, I hadn't thought of that. I think I had aged a lot by the time I was 15.

How do you feel? I can't get used to not seeing you often on Hive.

Would be great (or weird) if one wouldn't age over the years. I am very tired, it was a long and good day, so eyes will close soon.

👋 descansa.

These are great pictures and what a beautiful 15 years photo!!!!

Also in Argentina they used to have an album of photos... I had it.... there was no money either, but with the help of my godfather, there was a small gathering, photos and a dress, my hair was down to my waist.... I remember...

The album... a student has it, a lady who was my student and whom I love very much... there... it's there. At some point I will travel and I will bring back some things... I remember it was winter, it was freezing, the dress was long, simple. The cake was delicious.

Reading you brought back a lot of memories!

Primero que todo te mando un abrazo. I like to know that this story made you remember nice things, that I took you back to where you came from.

Despite the little money, it was beautiful, my family was there and it was a beautiful moment! Hugs!!!

Of course, what counts in the end is not how, but with whom.

What can I say @nanixxx..., endearing. Loved seeing these pictures, glad you were up for it. 😀

😄 Thank you! I'm glad you like them.

Amandaaa I turned 15 in 1992 and my mom wanted to take me to Artemisa to a house that rented out dresses and took pictures of 15...luckily she listened to my pleas and didn't take me 🤣 (although now I could have used them for this challenge) 😆😜. I will definitely make you the flower dress, they look good on you!!!!!

And as icing on the cake...we had the same platonic love!!!! 😱😳😆😂🤣 Only me a few years earlier. Zenin Oganecus Blanco was my first love, in 7th grade, and we came to cross the first word in college. We studied from 7th to 12th without ever talking to each other hahahahaha.

Ay Amanda, el universo...

Escucha mis súplicas y no hagas ningún vestido de flores... 😂

Aaaaaaaaaaaaah... 😮 pero si te acuerdas del nombre completo! Verdad que sí. Oganecus Blanco. Ay Universo. 🤣

Ok, ok 🤣

You are BEAUTIFUL!! I cant choose my fave - al three are stunnigly nice shots.
ps - sadly my teen photoalbums are at parents house, and are not digitized. I considered to enter this challenge too, but it isnt possible.
Now you are not that tender baby and are used to some !BEER, right?

😄 Thank you... Oh a beer, I need it.

I think the Challengues here don't expire.

The year was 1995.

I was born that year!

It's impressive how much you can recollect the moments from those years, such nostalgia and with so much detail. Crazy to think of how much time has passed since then. Must be so strange to see the changes that came about within society too, having grown up in the era where it all really took off.

I just about caught the tail end of it all.

Oh, how young you are! I have a lot of grey hair already.

Here in Cuba, time stands still. I've seen society deteriorate a lot, people lose many values, and only the dreams I had when I was 15 years old, some of them have come true, but others sometimes feel more distant than they did then.

You beat me to it, I said I would do this challenge as well. Actially I just arrived at my mother's house where there are a collection of teenage photos which many are laughable. Oh 15 years old I will probably have one of me at that age. Yours look good and I can definitely see that young person in your looks today 😃

😁 Yeap... I beat you.

I look forward to that post of yours.

Thank you for being so kind. I still look like that one in some ways, yes. LOL.

Hey @nanixxx, here is a little bit of BEER from @qwerrie for you. Enjoy it!
