That's Not How You Rectify A Mistake. (That Is Simply Patching It!)

Well Hello There Fellow Technicians And Hivers!

Let's Crack It Open!

Literally... We might have to crack it open with a huge hammer! But first let's see what we might be able to figure out!

So this is a Toyata Rav4 manual transmission and the bloaks who worked on it did something quite terrible! Very terrible... This is out of this world terrible!

Now the owner says he had the motor redone and since then the transmission had a leak on it... I'm not sure how long ago the motor was done but this transmission looks like it has been leaking for quite sometime! So it might have been a year or three back but he brought it in now and asked us to take a look at it and see what we can do...

What The Whack?

This is bad.... real bad!

This is what I meant when I said we might have to crack it open... They legitly welded everything together, of-course this was done out of desperation and whoever did it clearly didn't care one bit for the client... They just wanted to rake in the money and that is why you go to someone trusted..

Sure mistakes happen but rectifying them is the solution not patching them up and untrustworthy bloaks simply can't rectify anything!

They even covered up the bolt with weldings! It was a total mess I can tell you that (Well it still is...) I would at the very least have thought that they would have removed the bolt but nada! After the welding they even pasted it so thick with pratley steel it ain't even funny! (That is already removed.)

A Slow Process!

To be fair we might have just went in there with a hammer... We knew this from the get go. We just wanted to be sure that the casing is in fact a throw away before we really turn it into a throw away!

You never know what lies under the surface but we have a fairly good idea about it and that was the bolt! We then proceeded to cut away at the bolt piece by piece until we felt that we can crack the casing open.

It was still a nippy situation none the less!

A Real Hard Drop!

Ask me I know... We've dropped quite a few transmissions over my span at the company... They dropped hard and none of them showed any damage at all. So I ask you how hard was this one dropped?

It might be that the engine was connected to it as well, from what the customer said.
I can't verify this of-course but he says the entire sump pan was bent in and he had to get a new one. Why did he have to get a new one? Shouldn't the bloaks who caused this get a new one?

Maybe I'm just whack?

The casing has casting marks on the inside and from what we can see when it was dropped it cracked on all those casting marks, this is really a throw away and we can't do much with this casing.

We Could Try But Why?

We told the client that we could try and send it in for welding and all that but if he takes that risk and it still leaks it'll be a job that runs from the top again! All of the labour hours for nothing?

It was best to try and get a second hand transmission and we can do some parts swapping and all that to make it nice and new again but this thing is wrecked! Well everything inside the transmission is still in a nice working condition it's just that the casing is buggered and you wont be able to buy just a casing from the scrapyard!

By the looks of it the casing is warped so badly that it looks like it's interfering with the differential.
But we gave our opinion to the client and he will go and rest on the matter, for now the ball is in his hands and we can do nothing about this for now! Onto the next job!
