Crónica de la Feria del Libro en Santiago de Cuba 2023 (ESP-EN)

La Feria Internacional del Libro (FIL) fue parte indiscutible de mi niñez. Luego de iniciar en La Habana este evento recorría todo el país terminando siempre en mi ciudad Santiago de Cuba.

Por lamentable que sea no deja de ser una realidad, muchos de los títulos que sacan en la FIL de La Habana no llegan al resto del país. Las tiradas son pequeñas y se agotan en el evento principal.

A pesar de esto, aún recuerdo la emoción, la expectativa y el olor a libros nuevos que predominaba en cada edición. También recuerdo el hecho de tener que recorrer varias veces los puestos mirando títulos y revisando a ver cual me resultaba más interesante y sobre todo intentando hacer rendir lo más posible mi limitado presupuesto.

Es por todo lo anterior que aún me sorprende que estuviera yo en la presente edición al frente de un puesto de venta de libros.

The International Book Fair (IBF) was an indisputable part of my childhood. After starting in Havana, this event would travel all over the country, always ending in my city of Santiago de Cuba.

As unfortunate as it is, it is still a reality, many of the titles published at the IBF in Havana do not reach the rest of the country. The print runs are small and sell out at the main event.

Despite this, I still remember the excitement, the expectation and the smell of new books that prevailed in each edition. I also remember having to go around the stands several times looking at titles and checking to see which one I found most interesting and above all trying to make the most of my limited budget.

It is because of all of the above that I am still surprised that I was at the present edition at the head of a book sale stand.

El cómo sucedió es simple, mi amiga @limaescritora tiene desde el 2020 un proyecto llamado Renacimiento para el rescate y venta de libros de segunda mano o de uso. Sin tener en cuenta de que por cuestiones de tiempo este había estado en pausa, aprovechando la feria del libro se gestionó una carpa de venta con el Centro Provincial del Libro de Santiago de Cuba y habló conmigo para que lo llevara.

How it happened is simple, my friend @limaescritora has since 2020 a project called Renacimiento for the rescue and sale of second hand or used books. Regardless of the fact that due to time issues this project had been on pause, taking advantage of the book fair she arranged a sales tent with the Provincial Book Center of Santiago de Cuba and talked to me so that I could take it.

Está de más decir que acepté. Un evento de este tipo reúne a personas de todos los círculos sociales en un mismo lugar (en este caso la arteria más concurrida de la ciudad, la calle Enramadas). Por tanto, si observas bien, puedes descubrir las historias de aquellos que se acercan buscando la magia de los libros.

Needless to say, I accepted. An event of this kind brings together people from all social circles in the same place (in this case the busiest artery of the city, Enramadas Street). So, if you look closely, you can discover the stories of those who come looking for the magic of books.

Al ser un puesto de libros de uso se me acercaron varias personas mayores a preguntarme si comprábamos libros o a comentarme que tenían una colección de libros que no querían que terminaran en la basura o estuvieran acumulando polvo. Esto reafirmó una filosofía que tengo desde hace algún tiempo: comprar-leer-vender/regalar.

Vi también una niña de unos 9 o 10 años defenderse del reclamo (o quizás burla) de uno de sus compañeros de aula por comprar varios libros diciendo: "y tú nada más compras jueguitos y boberias". Amé ese momento 😍.

Muchas personas se referían al puesto como el de los libros viejos (algo inexacto, pero al menos nos distinguía del resto) y muchos otros nos comentaban que era lo mejor que tenía la feria, que teníamos los mejores libros. Esto dice más de la pobreza literaria de los otros stands que de la riqueza del nuestro. Vendimos casi 100 libros, una cantidad que puede parecer poca, pero no lo es cuando por lo general solo tienes una copia de cada título.

Being a used book stall I was approached by several older people asking me if we bought books or commenting that they had a collection of books that they didn't want to end up in the trash or collecting dust. This reaffirmed a philosophy I have had for some time: buy-read-sell/give away.

I also saw a girl of about 9 or 10 years old defend herself from the complaint (or maybe mockery) of one of her classmates for buying several books by saying: "and you just buy little games and nonsense". I loved that moment 😍.

Many people referred to the stand as the old books stand (somewhat inaccurate, but at least it distinguished us from the rest) and many others commented that it was the best thing the fair had, that we had the best books. This says more about the literary poverty of the other stands than about the richness of ours. We sold almost 100 books, an amount that may seem small, but it is not when you usually only have one copy of each title.

Se acercaron personas que los cánones de la sociedad no identificarían cono un lector y sin embargo tenían mucho conocimiento literario. Por eso, sin importar la apariencia nunca se le negó a nadie (al menos en mi puesto) la oportunidad de tomar el libro en sus manos o de preguntar cualquier inquietud. El caso que más notable fue el de un señor que cualquiera identificaría como un loco o un mendigo, sin embargo preguntó y compró varios libros sobre la historia de Santiago de Cuba porque el era "guía de turismo".

Casi nunca tenía el dinero, pero se iba y regresaba y compraba. Si alguien me preguntara por qué le vendía a este señor que eminentemente alguna patología psicológica tenía o me dijera que iba a coger los libros para cualquier cosa meno para leerlo le respondería que: nadie que no tiene dinero pero lo busca para comprar un libro lo hace para otra cosa que no sea leerlo.

En el caso contrario a este señor estaban estos hombres jóvenes y con mejor economía, que compraron varios libros (en otro puestos) para usarlos como gancho para atraer a los turistas que pasaban (si eres cubano sabes a lo que me refiero). También estaba el "negociante" que pregona de todo y cuando veía pasar a la policía se acercaba a interesarse por los libros.

People approached me that the canons of society would not identify as a reader and yet they had a lot of literary knowledge. Therefore, regardless of appearance, no one was ever denied (at least at my booth) the opportunity to take the book in hand or to ask any questions. The most notable case was that of a man who anyone would identify as a madman or a beggar, yet he asked and bought several books on the history of Santiago de Cuba because he was a "tour guide".

He almost never had the money, but he would go and come back and buy. If someone asked me why I was selling to this gentleman who eminently had some psychological pathology or told me that he was going to take the books for anything but to read them I would answer: nobody who does not have money but seeks it to buy a book does it for anything else but to read it.

In the opposite case to this gentleman were these young men with better economy, who bought several books (in other stalls) to use them as a hook to attract tourists passing by (if you are Cuban you know what I mean). There was also the "negociante" who hawked everything and when he saw the police passing by he approached to ask for the books.

Mención especial para aquellos que se alarmaban al ver un libro en 50 o 100 pesos y luego iban y se compraban un chupachupa en 80 pesos.

Para mí en lo personal la feria fue un éxito. Pudimos darle una segunda vida a muchos libros que estaban acumulando polvo y que hubieran tenido un destino más triste y ayudar a que los dueños originales recibieran un ingreso por ellos. Muchas personas pudieron reencontrarse con clásicos o con aquellos títulos que leyeron de jóvenes y hoy deseaban releer.

Special mention to those who were alarmed to see a book at 50 or 100 pesos and then went and bought a chupachupa at 80 pesos.

For me personally the fair was a success. We were able to give a second life to many books that were gathering dust and would have had a sadder fate and help the original owners receive an income for them. Many people were able to rediscover classics or those titles they read when they were young and now want to reread.

No obstante, pude reafirmar la percepción de que en nuestro país las editoriales no hacen estudios de mercado ni escuchan a los lectores. No hay gestión de venta por parte de las librerías y la política para la impresión de nuevos títulos, sus precios y la cantidad de ejemplares es cuando menos un desastre.

Por suerte, proyectos como el nuestro y negocios de varias personas particulares que venden libros de uso están ahí, disponibles para efectuar el rescate de la literatura.

However, I was able to reaffirm the perception that publishers in our country do not conduct market research or listen to readers. There is no sales management by bookstores and the policy for printing new titles, their prices and the number of copies is a disaster to say the least.

Fortunately, projects like ours and the businesses of several individuals who sell used books are there, available to rescue literature.
