Con el paso del Huracán Rafael por Artemisa, provincia del occidente de Cuba todo fue afectado, quedaron comunidades devastadas completamente; mientras que, en cuanto a los daños eléctricos, estos fueron tan graves que provocaron el colapso por varios días del sistema eléctrico nacional. Alrededor de 4 933 viviendas quedaron afectadas, casi todas con derrumbes parciales de sus estructuras y total de techo. La mayoría de los hospitales y algunos policlínicos, están entre las más golpeados del territorio. 40 instituciones del sector educativo sufrieron deterioro, así como 174 establecimientos de comercio (74 bodegas), instalaciones productivas y lugares del deporte como el Estadio de Artemisa. Las afectaciones de cultivos como los del plátano, la yuca, el frijol y el arroz fueron grandes. Y perdimos todo el tabaco sembrado. En el cultivo del café, se reportaron afectaciones en 357 de las 640 hectáreas ya sembradas.
Entre tantas afectaciones están las que sufrió: La Finquita del Arte, proyecto artístico y agroecologico liderado por el pintor y activista comunitario Miguel Mendiola, localizado en el municipio Bauta, de dicha provincia Artemisa. De este lugar ya les he contado en publicaciones anteriores. En el mismo se combina la siembra agroecologica y la crianza de animales, con los talleres de Artes visuales, siendo la sede del colectivo artístico Petrona Cribeiro y un espacio para el aprendizaje y beneficio de la comunidad.
Es una práctica común de la comunidad cubana de hivers el ofrecer apoyo a los afectados por situaciones de desastres naturales. Como no tuvimos electricidad por casi 9 dias en este municipio no pude enterarme antes de los daños que causó el huracán en este proyecto. Realmente cuando visite el lugar ya se respiraba un ambiente de recuperación muy positivo. Pero le solicité a Mendiola algunas de las fotografías que tomó de los estragos causados por el huracán para mostrarlas en esta publicación que tiene como objetivo recaudar fondos para ayudar al proyecto a sobrepasar está etapa de perdidas materiales...
Según Mendiola toda la zona de los corrales con los animales que ellos crían fue totalmente inundada. Los cultivos de yuca fueron derribados, así como los árboles frutales. También las plantaciones de ají y el tomate fueron destruidos... las matas de plátano siempre se ven muy afectadas por los fuertes vientos.
La edificación rústica que funciona como aula- taller, una pequeña habitación y baño sufrió daños en el techo, así como el techado de la cocina salió volando.
Es inevitable sufrir las consecuencias de la fuerza de la naturaleza. Quienes vivimos en el Caribe hemos aprendido a lidiar con estos fenómenos naturales. The rustic building, which functions as a classroom-workshop, a small room and bathroom, suffered damage to the roof, and the kitchen roof was blown off.
