Saludos mis estimados lectores. Para los amantes de los paisajes exóticos, hoy les traigo algo especial. Si algún día viajas por la carretera Baracoa-La Máquina, en Guantánamo, podrás disfrutar de uno de los paisajes más hermosos de la República de Cuba. Se trata del majestuoso Cañón del Río Yumurí.
La primera vez que visité el cañón era solo un estudiante de geología, que cursaba su segundo año de carrera. Recuerdo que el lugar me generó una sensación de sentirme pequeño, que no volví a sentir en otro lugar.
He tenido la dicha de visitar sitios impresionantes desde el punto de vista geológico, como la cuenca del Rin en Alemania, el valle de México, la costa del Pacífico de Centro América o los Alpes Suizos, pero nunca sentí ese sentimiento en ningún otro lugar como en Yumurí.
Y es que Baracoa en general es un lugar lleno de paisajes sobrecogedores y místicos. Y este no es la excepción.
La llegada al lugar es a través de una agosta carretera que cursa al filo de una costa abrupta, barrancos costeros a un lado y montaña al otro.

Greetings my dear readers. For lovers of exotic landscapes, today I bring you something special. If one day you travel along the Baracoa-La Maquina highway, in Guantánamo, you will be able to enjoy one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Republic of Cuba. This is the majestic Yumurí River Canyon.
The first time I visited the canyon I was just a geology student in my second year of college. I remember that the place gave me a feeling of feeling small, which I never felt anywhere else.
I have had the good fortune to visit geologically impressive places, such as the Rhine basin in Germany, the Valley of Mexico, the Pacific coast of Central America or the Swiss Alps, but I have never felt that feeling anywhere else like Yumurí.
And Baracoa in general is a place full of overwhelming and mystical landscapes. And this is no exception.
The arrival to the place is through a rugged road that runs along the edge of a steep coast, coastal ravines on one side and mountains on the other.

Es posible adentrase en el Cañón alquilando un pequeño bote, que te llevará rio adentro. Pasado unos doscientos metros aparecen los primeros bancos de arena del Río, algunos islotes bien desarrollados con abundante vegetación.
En los bancos de arenas es posible encontrar infinidad de muestras de rocas ígneas, sedimentarias y metamórficas. Si se tiene un poco de suerte y buena vista es posible encontrar algún fragmento de jadeita, que es una piedra preciosa verde.

In the area, limestone rocks emerge, characterized by strong erosion due to pluvial and wind action, which caused a deep canyon along a fault that descends from the mountains to sea level, and that in some points reaches up to 300 m altitude. Cliffs with folds and pointed tops and steep slopes appear on both sides of the river, with important erosive and gravitational formations.
It is possible to enter the Canyon by renting a small boat, which will take you into the river. After about two hundred meters, the first sand banks of the River appear, some well-developed islets with abundant vegetation.
On the sandbanks it is possible to find countless samples of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. If you have a little luck and good eyesight, you may find a fragment of jadeite, which is a green gemstone.

Ciertamente, un chapuzón en esas playas es una experiencia a otro nivel. Particularmente las prefiero a playas, digamos más llenas como Guardalavaca o Varadero. Será que me he ido acostumbrando a paisajes sin mucha gente. Los geólogos pasamos muchas horas alejados del mundo real.
