[ENG/ESP]DE CÓMO SURGIO EN Mí EL INTERÉS POR LAS CRIPTOMONEDAS. PARTE I-HOW I BECAME INTERESTED IN CRYPTO-MOONS. PART I

Fue como el juguete nuevo. Comunicación con el mundo entero, imágenes, textos, videos, libros, artículos, noticias y todo tipo de materiales a solo un clik. Todos lo vimos como algo necesario y bueno, pero pocos nos detuvimos a pensar en sus riesgos.

Eran 20 años de desventaja con respecto al mundo en el uso de internet y sin una intención definida de su uso; la inocencia de los cubanos llamó la atención de algunos inteligentes y conocedores, que deseosos de obtener ingresos fijaron la mira en Cuba. De esta manera, por algunos años, se popularizaron varias empresas con funcionamiento bajo esquema Ponzi, lo que nos deslumbró.

No importa cuál fue la más exitosa para unos y desastrosa para otros, dentro de los que me incluyo. Lo que importa ahora es que a partir del desastre y la pérdida de dinero de muchos cubanos, se corrió como pólvora la palabra estafa para conceptualizar todo aquello que olía a criptomonedas o negocio en internet. Así surgió la etiqueta que atemoriza a muchos aun hoy en día ¡Eso es ESTAFA!

It was like the new toy. Communication with the whole world, images, texts, videos, books, articles, news and all kinds of materials just a click away. We all saw it as something necessary and good but few of us stopped to think about its risks.

Those were 20 years of disadvantage with respect to the world in the use of the Internet and without a defined intention of its use; the innocence of the Cubans caught the attention of some intelligent and knowledgeable people, who, eager to obtain income, set their sights on Cuba. In this way, for some years, several companies operating under a Ponzi scheme became popular.Bold.

It does not matter which was the most successful for some and disastrous for others, including myself. What matters now is that from the disaster and the loss of money of many Cubans, the word scam spread like wildfire to conceptualize everything that smelled of cryptocurrencies or internet business. Thus arose the label that frightens many even today. That is a SCAM!

El asunto llegó tan lejos que hizo al Banco Central de Cuba, emitir un comunicado sobre el asunto, donde se denunciaba el esquema piramidal de estas empresas, a la vez que dejaba sentado en nombre del Estado cubano su desaprobación a las mismas, y aconsejaba al público no involucrase en este tipo de negocios.

The matter went so far that the Central Bank of Cuba issued a communiqué on the matter, denouncing the pyramid scheme of these companies, while at the same time expressing the Cuban State's disapproval of them and advising the public not to get involved in this type of business.

El desconcierto y la confusión/Bewilderment and confusion

Para la mayoría del público en Cuba, acostumbrado a ver en el Estado un ente protector, la nota del BCC fue un consuelo; en otros, sembró aún más la ignorancia para rechazar todo aquello que tuviera que ver con criptomonedas y negocios en la red, los que lejos de lanzarse a la búsqueda de información; cómodamente aceptaron la recomendación del BCC sin más ni más.

El rechazo a buscar información sobre las criptos se agudizó tanto, hasta el punto de relacionar de manera directa e indisoluble a estas con la estafa como figura delictiva. Hablar de criptomonedas en algunos círculos podía ser, no solo inútil sino peligroso. Inútil por la incapacidad de muchos para entender de qué se hablaba, peligroso porque podías ser tildado de estar propagando la estafa y esparciendo el miedo, con todas las consecuencias que ello podía acarrear.

For the majority of the public in Cuba, accustomed to seeing the State as a protective entity, the BCC's note was a consolation; for others, it sowed even more ignorance to reject everything that had to do with cryptocurrencies and business on the network, those who, far from launching a search for information, comfortably accepted the BCC's recommendation without any further ado.

The refusal to seek information about cryptocurrencies became so acute that they were directly and indissolubly related to fraud as a criminal offense. Talking about cryptocurrencies in some circles could be not only useless but dangerous. Useless because of the inability of many to understand what was being talked about, dangerous because you could be labeled as spreading the scam and spreading fear, with all the consequences that this could entail.

También fui presa, primero de la ignorancia, después de la confusión. Pero me resistía a creer que las criptomonedas, tan extendidas por el mundo hace tanto tiempo, fueran a ser el villano de nuestros ingresos, visto solamente desde una pequeña isla del Caribe.

No podía entender que las criptomonedas, por el solo hecho de serlo y ser utilizadas como activo financiero, en un modelo de empresa como la que comentamos, fueran algo tan terrible. Debía haber algo más que hasta ese momento desconocía.

I also fell prey, first to ignorance, then to confusion. But I was reluctant to believe that cryptocurrencies so widespread in the world so long ago, were going to be the villain of our income, seen only from a small Caribbean island.

I could not understand that cryptocurrencies, by the mere fact of being cryptocurrencies and being used as a financial asset, in a business model such as the one we discussed, were something so terrible. There must have been something else that I was unaware of up to that moment.

Mi ignorancia sobre las criptomonedas y su uso, me hizo salir a buscar qué había detrás de todo aquello. Primero: en qué consistía un esquema ponzi piramidal, su historia y funcionamiento, en lo que no me detendré pues hay bastante información sobre ello; y segundo: ¿qué relación podía haber entre este modelo y las criptomonedas en general?

Mis investigaciones me llevaron a comprender que un esquema ponzi piramidal para su ejecución, puede utilizar cualquier moneda, de cualquier país o cualquier activo, no necesariamente tenía que ser con criptomonedas. Resultaba muy interesante en el caso que nos ocupa que al ser desde Cuba, se utilizaba el peso cubano (CUP)¹, moneda de curso legal, como activo de cambio al precio del CUC² contra las criptomonedas (generalmente stablecoin)³ a los efectos de fondear la pirámide con esta última.

My ignorance about cryptocurrencies and their use, made me go out to look for what was behind all that. First, what was a pyramid ponzi scheme, its history and operation, which I will not dwell on because there is enough information about it; and second,What relationship could there be between this model and cryptocurrencies in general?

My research led me to understand that a pyramid ponzi scheme for its execution can use any currency, from any country or any asset, it does not necessarily have to be with cryptocurrencies. It was very interesting in the case at hand that being from Cuba, the Cuban peso (CUP), legal tender, was used as an exchange asset at the price of the CUC against cryptocurrencies (usually stablecoin) for the purpose of funding the pyramid with the latter.

La inmensa mayoría de los cubanos dentro de este negocio, ni siquiera sabíamos qué estabamos haciendo . Nuestra mira solamente estaba fijada en el beneficio o resultado, con la esperanza inducida de alcanzar algún ingreso.

La ignorancia de ese ¿Cómo se hace? Obligó a utilizar un intermediario que no era más que un sujeto necesario, quien dominaba todos lo relacionado con el sistema de cambio y funcionamiento de la pirámide, se encargaba de fondear, extraer y entregar la rentabilidad.

Después de desentrañar esta madeja, me surgió otra interrogante ¿Por qué las criptomonedas pueden ser un activo ideal para este tipo de modelos?

A primera vista me respondí que la razón era simple. Las criptomonedas por su naturaleza y en su mayoría, al no tener regulación institucional, se prestan para todo tipo de negocio fraudulento y oscuro. Pero pude ver a tiempo, que esta respuesta solamente me hundía más en mi propio desconocimiento sobre el tema.

¿Cómo voy a conformarme con esta respuesta si no tengo ni la menor idea de qué son las criptomonedas, su historia, ventajas, defensores y detractores? No, no estaba siendo justo con estas ni conmigo mismo. Debía continuar con mi indagación.

Pero esto te lo voy a seguir contando en el siguiente post.

The vast majority of Cubans in this business did not even know what we were doing. Our eyes were only fixed on the profit or result with the induced hope of achieving some income.

The ignorance of this How is it done? Forced to use an intermediary who was nothing more than a necessary subject who dominated everything related to the system of exchange and operation of the pyramid, was in charge of funding, extracting and delivering the profitability.

After unraveling this skein, another question came to my mind: Why cryptocurrencies can be an ideal asset for this type of model?

At first glance I answered that the reason was simple. Cryptocurrencies by their nature and mostly because they have no institutional regulation, lend themselves to all kinds of fraudulent and shady business. But I could see in time that this answer only plunged me deeper into my own lack of knowledge on the subject.

How am I going to settle for this answer if I have no idea what cryptocurrencies are, their history, advantages, proponents and detractors? No, I was not being fair to them or to myself. I had to continue with my inquiry.

But I will tell you more about this in the next post.
