Hoi An, Vietnam - Traditional Water Puppets

Traditional water puppets are a unique and fascinating way to learn something of the history, myths and legends of the Quang Nam
district and the ancient trading port city of Hoi An in Central Vietnam.

The approximately 1 hour shows us dragon boat racing, the mating dance of the Phoenix, how local fish are caught with traditional bamboo fish traps and we see something of the reliance traditional life in Central Vietnam had on its waterways.

The hand-crafted wooden puppets are amazing, and include phoenixes, dragons, ducks, snakes, boats, frogs, water spirits and the cutest little Vietnamese boys playing in the water. Unfortunately you don’t get to see or touch the puppets up close after the show, nor do the puppeteers engage with the audience beyond waving at the curtain call. There are no souvenirs or puppets for sale either.

The show throughout is set to traditional Vietnamese folk music, and gives an authentic taste of a very old culture, long before tourism became popular or performance art could be shared digitally
The show is narrated throughout in English. The Puppet Theater is an easy 15 minute walk from the Ancient Town of Hoi An, and the show is performed every day except Wednesdays and Sundays, starting at 6.30pm promptly. If you want a good seat, plan to be there 6ish. You can pre-purchase tickets (80,000 VND each – about USD $3.10 – no priority seating available) from the ticket booths in the Ancient Town. Seating is basic and yes, there are clean toilets on site.

The beauty of the water puppets is that it’s light, amusing, speaks to people of all ages and nationalities and imparts the flavor of Hoi An and Vietnam.

Speaking of flavor, there are loads of eateries across the road down the small street half a block down towards the city for after the show. Easy to get a taxi back to An Bang Beach and the area around the Theater is well lit and quite safe for solo women travelers.

Recommended and a delightful early evening – money well spent.

Awee, so simple, so cute! Glad ur finding some proper chill time out there xxx

Yah - I know, right?! Most unlike me not to write a complex post but I'm really appreciating that so many people don't see or find these things, and don't enjoy the tiny special things cos they're scared to interface. I had wanted to do the video on 3speak as a practice for my NEW VIDEO EMPIRE and then embed it into a @travelfeed post, but it doesn't seem to work that way.

It WAS easy and Luddite-proof, just like you promised :) x

Thanks for the nudge and the pep talks to get me started.

Right now we're only allowing YT and @dtube embeds.

Oh that's a serious bummer. Dtube sucks and @3speak is where it's at. But thanks for the heads up. 😊

Deos 3speak delete content after a while? This is our big concern!

It's unclear, actually. Having just trawled their FAQ it is not exactly stated. They claim a % of each post (rightly so) and I had understood as long as you keep posting, content stays up.

I KNOW dtube does not keep content, so don't use. And it's cumbersome. @3speak allows comment from non steem people, which I like.

So are you saying @travelfeed only supports posts which use youtube video???

As for embedding videos we only support @dtube and Youtube (as for now) but could be convinced to also support @3speak videos.

Those look cool. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Hope you vet a chance to see them perform in person sometime. 😊

This is really cool. Studying Viet Nam in middle school is what initially made me want to visit Asia, but I have yet to actually make it there. I keep getting pulled back to Thailand. I should just... Go.

Too bad they don't have any souvenir puppets....

You. Should. Just. Go. 😊 Yes, the lack of souvenir puppets totally surprised me.

Definitely never heard of this, and I'm sure it doesn't exist in Cambodia. Shadow puppetry is big in Cambodia. This is so cool!

The Cambodian shadow puppets are beautiful too. Hope you get a chance to see the water puppets one day in Hoi An. You'll be able to bring @kidsisters & @sreypov 😍

Very cool! Thanks for sharing. We have been living in Đà Nẵng for three months now and still haven't made it to Hội An. I'm a little afraid we're going to hate it because it's so touristy but I am definitely curious :)

You have to really plan Hoi An. First visit we stayed at the back on Minh An. A 10 min walk away from tourist central but another world away in terms of mood and vibe. An Bang is the same. The weeny GH we're staying at (An Bang Purple) has only 2 rooms and more family members here than anything else. LOL

If you do your homework and either walk or bike-motorbike around, it's lovely. A little micro-culture all of its own and soooooo unlike Hanoi and Saigon, and nothing like Da Nang either.
