You Can See The Oldest Astronomical Observatory of The World in Gyeongju, Korea

in #history7 years ago

There are uncountable relics in Shilla dynasty.
Among them One of the representative relic of Shilla dynasty is Cheomseongdae(첨성대, 瞻星臺) which means the place for watching Stars.

P2260467.JPG

Cheomseongdae was built in mid of 7th century AD.
It is the oldest astronomical observatory in the World which have been existed until now.

I was a kid when I saw this architecture first. I found the photo of Cheomseongdae taken in the honeymoon trip of my parents. It was a B/W photo.
The Cheomseongdae stood behind of my parents in the photo.

Some times this photos make me smile. My parents in Photos look younger than me.

Life is continuous process of taking a birth, growing, getting older and dying.
My father passed away 2 years ago, but he is still smiling on the Photo.

When I was a small kid, I asked my mom what was this architecture.
I still remember my mom explained that was the oldest astronomical architecture in the world patting me on my head.

So When I have visited Gyeongju, Cheomseongdae was the first priority whereI should visit.
In this visit, I was taking photos from far away.

Cheomseondae is very mysterious architecture, especially it’s appearance always make me curious.

Why did they make the astronomical observatory like that.

P2260468.JPG

The bottom and the roof are quadrilateral, and body is rounding appearance.

I estimated the reason as below.

The bottom of quadrilateral means the earth.
The body means the sky.

P2260469.JPG

It is believed that ancient people thought the earth of qardrilateral, and the sky of round.
(天圓地方)

This kinds of thought believed to be originated from ancient people who had lived in northern area ( central Asia now days)

Ancient Koreans seemed to have had very close relations with northern civilization.

In my opinion, Cheomseondae looks like an evidence of that relation.

Some scholars argued that the quadrilateral appearance of the roof could be the negative evidence against the theory of Sky round Earth quadrilateral.

But in my opinion, the quadrilateral roof looks like a scale to watch the movement of the heavenly bodies.

P2260483.JPG

Besides the window could be the part of that mission.

P2260470.JPG

Cheomseongdae could’ve played the role of the clock.

In the ancient world, the astronomy was the most important work of King in East Asia.

Cheomseongdae has 30 stories of the stone bricks from the foundation.
This thirty stories are believed as 1 month in Lunar calendar.

The fact that Cheomseongdae have lasted for such a long time without any damage, because the earthquake in this area have been so often occurred through history.

Of course, the appearance is not perfect now days.

It is having been damaged little by little due to the several reasons such as the earthquakes.

P2260480.JPG

Specialists had checked up whether the architecture was OK.
Fortunately they say there is no problem until now.

But it seems that something not so good is undergoing in my eyes.

Any way this the oldest astronomical observatory is really beautiful by itself.

Thank you for reading

Very interesting structure. I though it was some kind of ancient chimney when I first saw it.

Wow, I love seeing that. I have a great interest in astronomy. My best friend was an astronomer. For a while he ran the 100” telescope on Mt Wilson in California. At one time it was the largest in the world. I got to go see it up close many times. Love it!

They use it to observe sky since early ago

At the time of construction, Cheomseongdae dug 1.5m of the floor and put sand and gravel in it. It is based on the fact that the ground of the particle type is less shaky than the hard ground. In addition, stone, sand, and gravel were filled in Cheomseongdae. This is a seismic design called 'plate axis' that absorbs seismic waves.

Amazing pictures.. I am really fascinated of the age of the Cheomseongdae. To still be around this long, is just amazing.

I look at the pictures and in my mind, I try to imagine myself inside the Cheomseongdae back in that time, and wonder how they felt looking up at the sky and stars and what thoughts they had.

Thanks for sharing these photo's and the information, it's truly incredible.

Thank you so much for your comment

No problem, I was just saying what I think and feel :)

Wow, how they thought about technology in those days, the olden civilisations had strong technology base in their own way. I even wonder how the Egyptians built so many of their structures with so much precision and so scientifically without any modern tools. At times I feel in our age we are only enhancing technologies and science on the base that the ancient civilisations worked

The place for watching Stars is indeed beautiful !

Seems like some pretty nice memories of your parents are in the image !

Yes life is indeed an ongoing process !

Sorry to hear about your Father !

Have a great time ahead !

What a strange and interesting place ! I wanna be there!!! ))

Such things should be maximally protected. we are not aware of the importance of history as the future itself and we are not aware of how much a man was smart before 20 centuries. Perhaps architecture has progressed to this day, but some people do not take advantage of the knowledge they can use and want to live in ignorance.
It is a great pity if there are no written records from that time. it never occurred to google this and thank you for sharing it :)

That is very educational. I had never seen or heard of it. It sound very fasinating. It would capture anyones attention

Wow,great article about the astronomical observations ,but due to the earth quick ,as your area are mostly earthpron area ,so these historical architecture may destroy .But it seems very good condition still now. Thanks for the great sharing, have a good time ahead.

Nice post and nice story about it! I never heard about this place before but I love astrology!
Tanks to share with us this magnificent place :)

Your posts always move me. I love the history. I love learning about Korea. Most of all I love your perspective--gentle and profound: "Life is a continuous process...my father passed away two years ago but is still smiling in the photos".

Beautiful yet mysterious! what do they have inside a telescope or something ?
Also sorry for your loss mate, he is definitely smiling :) Much love

Very strange this architecture that, in fact, looks like a telescope aimed at the sky.
